去年上英國文學時，看同學意興闌珊，缺乏像老師我一樣熱火般的求知慾，就又做起你們生命中的啦啦隊長，點播這首Fantine在維克多·雨果小說悲惨世界改編的同名音樂劇所唱的solo: I Dreamed a Dream給你們這群心已枯槁媚俗的大學生聽。我不知道這首歌在你們的生活中起了多大的漣漪，但我家孩子在車子裡聽我試播CD時問道：「是什麼事讓她唱得這樣難過？」我順口回他：「一個偷麵包被關很久的故事。」愛吃麵包的他聽了眼睛睜好大：「為什麼？後來呢？」懶得理他：「自己看嘛！」我們在新學友遍尋不著這本書，當老師的媽媽就去圖書館借，成為他第一本完全沒有圖片的文字書，我感動地快掉下淚來...他開始「自己看」基度山恩仇記(他說是個搶女朋友的故事?被人陷害後來逃出來報仇?)、十五少年飄流記(他說是紐西蘭小學校外教學的故事?船被人放流飄到荒島，還有地圖和放大風箏的故事?)、假鐵面(他說是雙胞胎國王的故事?)、金銀島(他說是藏在馬鈴薯桶還是蘋果桶偷聽到有寶藏的故事?)...相較之下，我真的還蠻理你們的嘛?! 英國星光大道「Britain's Got Talent」，第一屆紅了Paul Potts，而今年第三屆，同樣「驚天動地」的另一參賽者終於出現。Susan Boyle，一個47歲的大嬸，據她所說一生人未試過拍拖，也未被男人吻過，自小就參 加合唱團，之後最多也只曾在酒廊唱歌。當她說要唱出舞台劇「孤星淚」的「I Dreamed a Dream」，主持及觀眾們都只有笑和不相信的樣子，但她以美妙的歌聲唱出三秒鐘後， 已經引來全場的尖叫聲及掌聲，主持人也由冷淡變為驚嘆，和開始時的態度完全不同 ...
