潘貫教授生平傳略
潘貫教授，字凌雲，1907年5月29日生於臺南。幼時在家塾研讀漢文，直至十三歲始接受學校教育。大學就讀於臺北帝國大學，為日治時期少數研習化學之臺灣青年。潘教授畢生致力於拉曼光譜、電化學、放射化學與分析化學之研究，並關心科學教育之發展；擔任臺灣大學化學系教授將近卅年，1958年更膺選為中央研究院院士。潘教授亦能為詩，多年來常以詩明志。夫人林雪治女士，畢業於臺南高等女校，持家有成；育有兩子兩女，按次為永興、淑慧、文慧與永昭。1974年9月2日潘教授病逝臺北，享年68歲。

求學生涯
潘父子聯公為前清武科秀才，日治時期執醫為業。因不願其子受異族教育，故潘貫教授習讀漢文，至十三歲時才送至臺南長老教會中學附屬小學接受新式教育，後相繼就讀於臺南州立第二公學校、臺南州立第二中學，以「為興宗國求科學」為志而進入臺北高等學校理科、臺北帝國大學理農學院化學科。
潘教授於臺北帝大時期即追隨松野吉松教授，大學畢業後又進入同校大學院（即現今之研究所）得文部省獎學金進行拉曼光譜之研究。日治時期臺籍青年多受箝制，就讀大學之人已在少數，能進入大學院者更屈指可數，顯見潘教授之優異。惟松野教授因病退休返日而其博士論文審查遭受延宕，與臺灣首位理學博士之銜失之交臂。

大學時期之研究
潘貫教授在臺北帝大求學期間，受到印度物理學家拉曼（Venkata Raman）獲得諾貝爾物理學獎影響，致力於有機化合物之拉曼光譜研究。終日埋首研究室中，從合成各種化合物，到裝置光源、拍攝照片，皆其一人為之，1932年自製發光器成功，曾有詩云：「世人地獄我天堂，暗室雙重紫外光。」1933年之學士畢業論文即是以拉曼效應為題；1933年至1937年間發表的八篇論文中，七篇是與指導教授松野先生並列作者外，有一篇僅為潘教授一人具名，備日後申請博士學位之用，亦可見其貢獻。論文中報告了多種有機化合物特定官能基之拉曼光譜數據，並試圖藉此解決一些化學結構上的問題，對早期的有機化合物光譜研究有相當價值。

光復後獻身研究與教育
潘貫教授離開臺北帝大之後，初執教於臺南高等工業學校（國立成功大學前身）電氣化學科，普受學生歡迎，對臺籍學生照顧尤多。並曾發表關子嶺溫泉成分的研究論文一篇。
光復後北上任教，未改「為興宗國求科學」之初衷，專注於研究與教學，認真培養年輕一代學子，中央研究院院士李遠哲先生、林聖賢先生均出其門下。在臺大任教近三十年，平日除課務外，終日埋首實驗室從事研究，孜孜不倦。其治學嚴謹之態度及關愛學生之情誼，許多受惠學生至今感念不已。
潘教授曾短期擔任理學院院長，謙沖自牧，鉅細靡遺，使院務大有進展。兼任化學系系主任期間，更是竭盡心力，推展系務，建造理化大樓及同位素館（今年已拆除重建）厥功至偉。
潘教授熱心科學教育，1946年曾在《新生報》發表「臺灣科學的前途」，1955-1956年曾為中國自然科學促進會編輯委員會主任委員，為《科學教育》雜誌前後撰文三十餘篇介紹化學新知與國外研究機構現狀。
1961年，潘教授曾受邀參加陽明山會談，針對科學教育問題提出務實建言。

光復後之研究與對臺大的貢獻
除早年的拉曼光譜研究外，潘貫教授任教臺灣大學期間，積極從事電化學與分析化學研究。1955年受中華教育文化基金會資助，由臺大選派赴美國加州大學，進行氧化銀電極之熱力學研究外，足跡亦遍至英、法、德、瑞士等地，進行各大學化學教育與研究之考察。後期進行錯化合物之物理化學研究，測定或計算多種常數及數值，在熱力學研究方面頗有貢獻，並受國內外專家之囑目。
迄辭世為止，潘教授出版有《定性化學分析》、《理論化學》二教科書，並發表相關論文六十四篇，對化學研究者提供寶貴研究資料及科學新知識，貢獻匪淺。
民國三、四十年代，民生困頓，然潘教授拒絕外界兼職工作，除學術研究以外，別無旁騖，專心致力研究，克服國內研究設備及器材之困難，自行純化試劑，設計儀器，促進國內科學之發展與進步。給予學生極佳之經驗，其門弟子蔣樹基先生於四十餘年後，將其在美國化學工業界之成就歸功於潘教授之教誨，可見一斑。

學術榮譽及其他貢獻
1955年潘貫教授獲日本東北大學頒給理學博士之榮銜。
1958年4月潘教授榮膺中央研究院第二屆院士，該次選舉為國民政府遷臺後之首次院士選舉，潘教授為第一位當選院士之臺籍人士。
1951年起歷屆高等考試均受聘為典試委員，並先後擔任教育部學術審議委員會委員、國家科學委員會委員、原子能委員會委員等職，均與其學術報國之夙願相符。
1956年國立清華大學於新竹復校，首即成立原子科學研究所，潘教授兼任教授與研究員，主持放射化學研究之發展，為該校之建設貢獻心力。

吟詩述懷
潘貫教授幼承庭訓，心繫祖國，痛惡日人之統治，習漢文至十三歲始入小學。後仍勤讀不懈，自十四歲初作以後，常以詩紓懷，從詩中可見其熱愛宗邦之情懷。潘教授提到「詩者心之聲也」，受殖民其自由不可得，惟藉舊詩隱影潛行。晚年將自己作品選擇部分集結為《凌雲詩集》（未刊本），依著作時期分作寒窗集（1924-1937年）、孤鴻集（1937-1945年）、光復集（1945-1946年）與秋濤集（1947年-），可視為潘教授一生心情之寫照。
〈寒窗集〉所述時期，跨越潘教授自中學至研究所之學生時期，多為遊歷之作，惟寄寓意於景色之中，表達受異族統治之困頓心情。1937年潘教授離開學校，亦為蘆溝橋事變日本開啟戰端之時，藉〈孤鴻集〉表達對戰爭之無奈，憐惜百姓所受戰亂之苦。〈光復集〉則書寫抗戰勝利回歸祖國之興奮心情。〈秋濤集〉作品不多，零星有偶感、贈友、病中紓懷等等。其詩作向少示人，民國39年底傅斯年校長遽然謝世，潘教授曾賦詩三首以為悼念，為芳鄰哲學系方東美教授得知，讀其詩後大為讚賞，贈詩一首，其末句即為「詩史長留海嶠春」。今得潘教授男女公子同意，將潘教授自選詩及晚年幾首未完稿彙印成集，分贈各界，以為本次特展紀念。

潘貫教授百年文物特展緣起
臺大圖書館依據2000年9月擬訂之計畫，開始蒐集本校教師及校友之名家手稿真蹟。目前已入藏王文興、林文月、臺靜農、白先勇、楊雲萍、葉慶炳、葉維廉、王禎和、鄭騫、葉嘉瑩、潘貫等名家教授之手稿資料，同時亦已舉辦王文興、林文月、臺靜農、葉維廉、王禎和、楊雲萍及鄭騫等七位名家手稿資料展系列活動，藉以展現本校名家教授與校友之豐碩研究與創作成果。
本校化學系故教授潘貫先生為中央研究院首位臺籍院士，長期鑽研物理化學與分析化學，沛然有成；投身科學教育，誨人不倦。潘貫教授逝世廿五週年時，其子女不僅為興建化學系新大樓捐款，後又將其手稿文物捐贈圖書館永久典藏，以潘教授為學念茲在茲之精神為典範，期為後代學子之惕勵。
