Inspection of pipeline systems is an essential and necessary part of operating in industrial sectors in the modern world in which we find ourselves living. Many industries are no stranger to regular pipeline system pipe inspection services and testing, employing written schemes to which they perform their inspection processes.

Any industries are involves, typically military, aerospace, defence, oil and gas, refining, pharmaceutical, bulk storage, aviation, offshore, process, amongst many, many more. Typically inspection is carried out at regular intervals, typically several years between each one.

Non Destructive Testing (NDT) is the go to method for performing inspection of pipelines, and piping systems. Non destructive testing provides an adequate way to determine the condition of the pipelines, whilst also keeping time and cost minimised via the ability to inspect the condition in a 'non-destructive' manner. In practice this means that nothing has to be cut, re-welded, damaged or replaced in any way, and the original pipeline is almost untouched compared to its condition prior to pump inspection checklist.

Several techniques are available depending on the level of data, and thoroughness of inspection required. Often it is better to perform a more thorough inspection for a higher level of confidence, which may then allow a greater period before the next inspection, depending on policy.

Inspection can be typically performed using more basic NDT techniques, such as ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle testing, and dye penetrant testing, and employing technicians trained to the relevant level per each technique.

A more advanced inspection can be performed and is typically the case due to the large budgets of most industries involved. Often a standard such as the API 570 standard is employed and at least one technician with an API 570 inspection certification is required. The API 570 standard is maintained and set out by the American Petroleum Institute, however is a global qualification and employed internationally, despite the name.

Various sections of the pipeline are generally inspected. Typically all spools are thickness checked, often using ultrasonics, and potentially other advanced techniques, such as Low Frequency Electromagnetic Technique (LFET) or Long Range Ultrasonic Technique (LRUT). Welds are inspected, ideally with an eddy current method due to the ability to inspect steel plate check through paint and coatings, which tends to present in most cases.

Nozzles, flanges and gauges are often checked, though comes down to the scope of inspection required. At a bare minimum these will be covered with a visual inspection, typically by an API 570 inspector, due to their advanced knowledge and experience in pipeline failure mechanisms, and early warning signs.
