芮氏規模7.8的強烈地震16日傍晚侵襲厄瓜多中部海岸地區。厄瓜多副總統葛拉斯(Jorge Glas)在電視上宣布，這起強震已經造成至少41人喪生。

根據美國地質調查所(USGS)，這是自1979年以來，發生在厄瓜多的最強烈地震，震央在人口不多的渡假漁港穆伊斯內(Muisne)南南東方27公里處。

葛拉斯表示，目前已經至少有41人不幸喪生，主要發生舊港市(Portoviejo)、曼塔(Manta)以及瓜亞基爾(Guayaquil)。這3個地方距離震央都有數百公里之遠。葛拉斯指出，隨著受創最嚴重地區的災情會陸續傳出，預料死傷人數將會進一步升高。

葛拉斯已經宣布，厄瓜多進入緊急狀態。
