週末,催兒子趕交大學申請材料,有感。

The Insanity of being politically correct

On a Saturday like this
when college application was a menace
I assumed the role of a father and
told my son it is time to say adios
to the age of innocence

At a moment like this, I suddenly realized
I sounded very much like someone I despised
Nearly overcome with shame had I not remembered
the necessity of making a compromise
I braced up and insisted that he surrender
to some politically correct nonsense

Ups and downs in growing up
Wax and wane in daily life
The migraine you suffer, the tears you shed
They do not please
the clueless college admissions office

In the rain you got to dance
Under the sun you got to rejoice
Every struggle carries a meaning, to be approved
Every path leads to certain illumination, to be prophesied
Son, heed my plead
fake a bit, for those are winning materials you must produce

So he listened to the calculated move
and it broke my heart
Have I tamed him with timidity?
Have I corrupted him with hypocrisy?
I shuddered at what has just been accomplished
by a father figure-
the World's newly minted ambassador

But he seemed relaxed, after the submit button put
all the BS questions to rest
The garage music kindled hope, that
intact and strong shall be his defiance
truthful and free shall be his spirit, and
to a different tune he shall forever dance

Like an aged king I retired, but agitated
Oh how I long for bravery so scarce
to call the World all kinds of names as I please
A white-washed wall fabricated from pure cowardice
How dare it asks me to kiss its ***!

Be careful about that "fake a bit" part

That's what Abram did in Egypt.

We all know what happened later.

The cheeks...

Old-boy,

No reason to be so hard on yourself:  Sooner or later everyone becomes a hypocrite, just a matter of when and to what extent. Come to think of it; wouldn’t you rather he picks up the art from you than from some Tom, Dick, and Harry out there?

And no, I don’t think this world still desires our kisses on its ‘cheeks’ (whichever pair you think I’m alluding to is the right one.) We had done ‘serving the community’ long ago and it now wants our sons’ instead.

I’ve finalized my itinerary and will send you both a copy later tonight.
