Michelle Wie Disqualified at LPGA State Farm Classic

Saturday July 19, 2008 It had been a fantastic week for

 Michelle Wie  at the LPGA State  Farm Classic. She

was playing better than she had in two years, shooting

67-65-67 to finish three rounds at 17-under par and

one stroke off the lead. It looked like Wie would finish

 high enough  to earn enough money to secure an

LPGA Tour card for 2009. 

It looked like she  might even win.

Then disaster struck.

Disaster that Wie brought on herself, once again.

Following completion of the third round on Saturday,

Wie was informed that she had failed to sign her score

card following the second round.

No signature on the scorecard equals disqualification. 

And that's what Wie got.

The AP report notes:

The 18-year-old Wie, who appeared to have been crying, told

reporters she made a mistake.  "I don't know how it

 happened," she said.

This is the second disqualification for Wie since she

turned pro near the end of 2005.

 The first instance happened in her very first event

 as a professional, the 2005 Samsung World Championship,

and involved an improper drop.

It will be very, very difficult now for Wie to win enough money

to secure that 2009 LPGA Tour card without having to go

through Q-School. Wie needed roughly $80,000 in her final

two sponsor exemptions; now she needs at least that much

in her last tournament,  the Canadian Women's Open,

Aug. 14-17.

Wie will likely need a Top 5 finish in Canada to reach her

 monetary goal.
