當時Kristoffer 還是默默無聞的作曲作詞家，
寄居在Dottie West 和她的先生 Bill家裡，
有一次，他看到佛蘭克辛納區在電視上被訪問，
被問到“你相信什麼“的時候，
廋皮猴回答說，“酒、女人、或聖經，“
”whatever helps me make it through the night“，
從這句話得到靈感，寫下了這首歌。
歌的內容描寫一個孤單無助的人，
在深夜裡極需要有一位異性陪伴、撫慰，
是很親密、帶些曖昧的歌詞，
難怪Kristoffer 寫完後，獻給女房東時，
被Dottie West 以“太挑逗“為由而拒絕。
Kristoffer後來自己灌唱了這首歌，成績不錯。
但是由女歌手Sammi Smith所唱的版本，成績更好，
在鄉村歌曲排行榜上奪冠，熱門歌曲排行榜也高達第八，
Sammi Smith 也因此得到鄉村歌曲單張唱片大賞，
