Well, things may not be that simple as I think.  Fundamentally, to love or to be loved is one of the basic, but higher human motives to live, no matter how old they are.  A writer uses his humous and a little exaggerating penmanship to tell us why some senior people are trying to grasp their last chance to love or to be loved.  It is kind of sweet, but a little sentimental as well.
