Directions: The following is taken from Exercise 26, Chapter 15. Complete the passage with the correct form of each verb in parentheses – gerund (v-ing), infinitive (to v), or bare infinitive (v). Then check your answers against the original text.

Note: Tips are given in the second section.

    Multitasking

(Do)_______________ homework, (check)_______________ text messages, group (chat)_______________ – these are common activities, but are we capable of (do)_______________ all of them at the same time and (do)_______________ them well? According to research, it is impossible (multitask)_______________ successfully. We either do the tasks more slowly, or we make mistakes. And with each additional task, the mistakes multiply. We make fewer mistakes with one task, more with two, and even more with three.

Our brain functions better when it stays focused on one task. This is why it is more efficient (do)_______________ things in batches. We have a particular routine for mindset when we pay bills or answer emails, and these routines are different. So we want (pay)_______________ all our bills or (answer)_______________ all our emails at one time before we move on to something else.

There is a related technique from organizational psychology that can help us (stay)_______________ on task. It is called “OHIO", which stands for “only handle it once.” The idea is that once we start a single task like (delete)_______________ photos from a phone, we should stay with it. We dont put some photos aside (make)_______________ decisions about later. The result is that instead of (look)_______________ at something multiple times, we deal with it only once.

Think about what tasks you have that need (do)_______________ for school, work, or at home. Maybe there is something that you have started many times but havent ever finished. You might want (give)_______________ the OHIO technique a try (see)_______________ how it works for you.
