《Les Miserables》  歌劇《悲慘世界》

"Les Mis" tells the story of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his attempts to start a new life and make the world a better place. 

《悲慘世界》（Les Misérables），是法國作家雨果的長篇小說。有一次在路上兩個士兵夾持著一個因偷麵包而被判刑的男子，當時有一位貴夫人坐著漆有家徽的馬車經過，囚犯注目貴夫人，但貴夫人對囚犯卻視而不見。雨果認為此事表明當時法國平民承認貴族，貴族卻無視平民的存在，從此使雨果萌發寫《悲慘世界》的念頭。(像不像陳水扁對眾多的我們，視而不見的情況?)  

為了這部書，雨果前後構思了40年才完成。該書是雨果批判現實最有力的代表作，還被改編為歷史上最成功的音樂劇之一。對於革命的人潮，在書中，雨果借男主角之口說:「最高的法律是良心」。  

故事是法國大革命前的巴黎，充滿著動盪的氣氛，以往的首善之都已然與地獄無異，政府裡惟一關懷窮人的將軍拉馬克(Lamarque)又病危，人民的前途堪虞，社會湧動著一股革命的暗潮。窮苦農民，因饑餓偷了一塊麵包而判刑，刑滿釋放後，討生活又處處碰壁。   

革命青年們，經常在一家ABC咖啡館集會，他們的理想高昂，計畫在拉馬克將軍過世那一天爆發革命，人人都為這一天興奮，迷失、脆弱，畢竟在動亂中的每一個明天都是希望，也都是迷惑。這一天，很快的來臨了。加夫羅契衝進店裡，宣布將軍的死訊，青年一齊湧上街頭，尋求大眾的支持。
