韓德爾與巴哈都出生於1685年，同時兩個人也都是巴洛克時代最重要的作曲家。巴哈是以把音樂奉獻給教會與上帝的心態去譜曲，而韓德爾則完全相反，他的作品當中充滿了貴族式的華麗。當他倫敦旅遊時發現自己的歌劇《林納多》在那裡受到好評，便決定到英國發展，當時譜寫不少歌劇，都有不錯的成績，同時他也在英國經營歌劇院。他所譜寫的歌劇都有漂亮的花腔樂段。《彌賽亞》的轟動造就其事業的第二春，在義大利歌劇熱潮漸退之後，他也寫了不少清唱劇，維持聲望於不墜。
