去巴西參加奧運的奈及利亞男子足球隊，因為聯繫過程出了些亂子，錯過原本計畫搭乘的班機，經過好一番折騰，在開賽前幾個小時，才抵達巴西，不過他們克服了時差，和對氣候的不適應，首戰以五比四力壓已經在當地練習了好幾天的日本隊。（夏明珠報導）玉山銀行債務

未經證實的報導說，奈及利亞足球隊是因為奈國政府與航空公司搞不定機票錢，而耽誤行程，不過當局說沒這回事。而是球隊沒有事先訂好從亞特蘭大轉機前往巴西的票，到了之後才發現沒有機位，最後還是靠達美航空幫忙，免費派專機把他們從亞特蘭大送到巴西，那架飛機幾天前才奧運勤務，把美國夢幻籃球隊送往里約，奧運結束後，也會負責把夢幻隊接回美國。

亞特蘭大可以說是奈及利亞足球隊的福地，1996年亞特蘭大奧運，它們拿到金牌，今年剛好二十週年，它們又一次在亞特蘭大撞見奇蹟。

這不是非洲足球隊第一次差點錯過國際比賽，2014年世界盃，喀麥隆因為和體育主管當局在比賽獎金的問題上意見不和，臨出國拒絕登機，最後它們的足球協會挪用經費，滿足選手要求，它們才出發。
