Extinguish my eyes, Ill go on seeing you.
Seal my ears, Ill go on hearing you.
And without feet I can make my way to you,
without a mouth I can swear your name.

Break off my arms, Ill take hold of you
with my heart as with a hand.
Stop my heart, and my brain will start to beat.
And i f you consume my brain with fire,
Ill feel you burn in every drop of my blood.

Translated by Anita Barrows

當一個孩子喪失於死亡;

You intend for us to be humble, with our faces bowed in silent accord with you, like young poets at night who go
into distant parks.
Or like sad farmers who surround the child that was killed; and what happens then is always the same:
something magnificent rises up.

The one who notices you for the first time is disturbed by the neighbor and the clock; he walks bent down to trace your tracks, like an old person under a heavy weight.
Only later he listens to nature and senses the winds and plains;
hearing you being whispered from afar,
seeing you, being sung by the stars, being unable to ever again ignore
you in your coat.

To him you are new and close and kind and magnificent like a cruise
which he takes on a quiet ship
upon a river great and wide.
The land is far, beyond the sky,
exposed to winds from every place, and burdened by old woods.
The little hamlets that approach
disperse again like chiming bells - like yesterday and like today, and like the rest that we had seen.
But along this rivers banks ever new cities rise into view and meet us on our festive trip halfway with whirring wings.

Translated by Annemarie S. Kidder

You are the future,
the red sky before sunrise
over the fields of time.

You are the cocks crow when night is done,
you are the dew and the bells of matins,
maiden, stranger, mother, death.

You create yourself in ever-changing shapes
that rise from the stuff of our daysunsung,
unmourned, undescribed,
like a forest we never knew.

You are the deep innerness of all things,
the last word that can never be spoken.
To each of us you reveal yourself differently:
to the ship as coastline, to the shore as a ship.

Translated by Anita Barrows

In deep nights I dig for you like treasure.
For all I have seen
that clutters the surface of my world
is poor and paltry substitute
for the beauty of you
that has not happened yet.

My hands are bloody from digging.
I lift them, hold them open in the wind,
so they can branch like a tree.

Reaching, these hands would pull you out of the sky
as if you had shattered there,
dashed yourself to pieces in some wild impatience.

What is this I feel falling now,
falling on this parched earth ,
softly,
like a spring rain?
