Some people say that tomato is a fruit. Others say it is a vegetable. In Bunol, a small town in Spain, tomatoes are weapons. Each year, people in the town start a a tomato fight on the last Wednesday of August. First, trucks full of tomatoes are brought to the town at 11:00 a.m. Then, people in the town pick up the tomatoes and start throwing them at one another. After a two-hour long fight, these people are all wet and red and covered from head to toe in tomato juice.
Nobody knows exactly how the tradition of the fight started. One possible story is that everything began in 1945. When some young people wanted to join a parade, they pushed others to move along. Those who were pushed away became angry. Soon there was a real fight. It happened near a market. These young men took tomatoes from vendors and threw them at each other angrily. Finally, some police officers came and stopped them. The next year, these young men met again. This time they prepared their own tomatoes for the fight. So the tomato festival, La Tomatina, has held since then.
If you want to have fun at the tomato fight, don't wear your favorite clothes! Also, be sure to book a room early. Finally, watch out for flying tomatoes and enjoy yourself there!
