Described by some as a little Switzerland, Li Shan epitomizes the beauty of the mountains in central Taiwan. One of Chiang's lodges in the area, Fushou Villa, was built in 1963 employing traditional Chinese architecture, with deep yellow roof tiles and red columns. Another one, up the mountain from Fushou Villa at an altitude of 2,580 meters, is called Daguan Pavilion. Built in 1969, it is situated adjacent to a beautiful natural pond, which is quite rare at such high altitudes. One reason it is known as Heavenly Pond is that legend has it that good spirits from heaven and Earth gather there and that visitors can realize their dreams by circling it three times to the west and three times to the east.

It is said that Chiang liked to concentrate on national affairs while enjoying the view from the Daguan Pavilion. Surrounding it and Heavenly Pond are the magnificent Mount Snow Range, Dayu Ridge and Mount Hehuan. Truly, it exemplifies the "good mountain, good water" mark of superior feng shui in Chinese tradition.

Equally moved by the beauty of the area, Chiang's son and successor as ROC president, Chiang Ching-kuo, also built himself a summer home nearby.

Whether or not one criticizes Chiang for extravagance in spending social resources on so many private residences, the viewer of "Endless CKS Hotels" cannot help but get a sense of the beauty of Taiwan and at least give Chiang grudging credit for taking advantage of his position to enjoy Taiwan's natural beauty as few Taiwanese have ever done. A personal pilgrimage to the shingguan in every corner of the island would be well worth the effort.

Those rooted in Taipei City with little opportunity to go too far afield can take a first step by visiting the former president's official residence in the city's Shilin District, whose large surrounding grounds have been transformed into a delightful public park.
