1.drought(n.)
a long period of time during which there is very little or no rain
ex: The drought caused serious damage to crops.

2.contemplation(n.)
a. the process of thinking about something or looking at something for a long time
b. the religious activity of thinking about God
ex: They sat in quiet contemplation.

3.transparent(adj.)
a. a transparent object or substance is clear or thin enough for you to see things through
b. a transparent process, activity, or organization does not try to keep anything secret
c. simple, clear, and easy to understand
d. a transparent lie or excuse is obviously not true
ex: Citizens are asking for a more transparent democratic government.

4.stain(v.)
a. to leave a mark on something accidentally
b. to add colour to wood using a special liquid
c. to add colour to something in order to make it easier to examine under a microscope
d. if something stains someone's reputation, character etc, it spoils it
ex: I'm going to stain it a deep red colour.

5.commission(n.)
a. a group of people who have been given the official job of finding information about something or controlling something
b. an amount of money paid to an employee for selling something
c. the act of committing a crime
ex: She served on the city's water commission.

6.penetrate(v.)
a. to go through or into something
b. to see or show the way through (something)
c. to succeed in becoming part of
ex: My car's headlights couldn't penetrate the dense fog.

7.intact(adj.)
not harmed, damaged, or lacking any parts as a result of something that has happened
ex: His image as party leader has survived the crisis intact.

8.fluency(n.)
a. the ability to speak a foreign language very well
b. a clear and confident way of expressing yourself without seeming to make an effort
c. a smooth way of moving without seeming to make an effort
ex: He writes about this period of our country's history with great fluency.

9.exquisite(adj.)
a. extremely beautiful and delicate

ex: The furnishings show exquisite taste.

10.legislation(n.)
a law, or a set of laws
ex: She has called for legislation to eliminate handguns.

11.magnify(v.)
a. to make something appear bigger than it really is
b. to increase the size, strength, or power of something
c. an old word meaning 'to praise God'
ex: Thick spectacles magnified his eyes.

12.migrant(adj.)
a. a person who goes from one place to another especially to find work
b. a bird or animal that moves from one area to another at different times of the year
ex: Migrants in search of work on farms.

13.overwhelm(v.)
a. to affect someone's emotions in a very powerful way
b. to exist in such great amounts that someone or something cannot deal with them
c. to defeat an opponent in a sport or game, especially by a lot of points
ex: We were overwhelmed by the sacrifices they had made.

14.paradox(n.)
a. a person, thing, or situation that is strange because they have features or qualities that do not normally exist together
b. a statement consisting of two parts that seem to mean the opposite of each other, or the use of this kind of statement in writing
ex: We get this apparent paradox of people migrating to an area that has very high unemployment.

15.auxiliary(adj.)
available to provide extra help, power, etc., when it is needed
ex: The auditorium has an auxiliary cooling system used only on particularly sweltering days.

16.alternate(v.)
a. if one thing alternates with another, they happen or come one after another, in a regular pattern that keeps being repeated
b. to choose one thing or situation and then another, and keep repeating that pattern
ex: His mood alternates between joy and despair.

17.navigate(v.)
a. to choose a path so that a ship, plane, or car can go in a particular direction, especially by using maps or instruments
b. to deal effectively with a complicated situation
c. to move between the different areas of a website by using the links contained in it
ex: There's no one I trust more to navigate these tricky political situations.

18.compliment(n.)
a. something nice that you say to praise someone
b. used for greeting someone, or giving them your good wishes
ex: He kept paying me compliments on my cooking.

19.decent(adj.)
a. good, or good enough
b. behaving towards other people in an honest, fair, and nice way
c. considered by most people to be moral, good, or reasonable
d. wearing enough clothes to not be embarrassed to let other people see you
ex: When I told her the truth, she was quite decent about it.

20.latitude(n.)
a. distance north or south of the equator measured in degrees up to 90 degrees
b. an imaginary line that circles the Earth at a particular latitude and that is parallel to the equator
c. freedom to choose how to act or what to do
ex: The judge has wide latitude to reject evidence for the trial.

21.manifest(v.)
to show something such as a feeling or ability, so that it is easy to notice
ex: Jane manifested an unwillingness to sit and talk to Lydia.

22.ironic(adj.)
a. expressing the opposite of what you really think, especially in order to be humorous
b. an ironic event or situation is interesting and sometimes humorous, because it is the opposite of what you would expect
ex: It's ironic that a government so concerned about law and order is disregarding an international treaty.

23.optional(adj.)
something that is optional is available or possible if you want it, but you do not have to have it or do it
ex: The history course is optional, but English is compulsory.

24.predecessor(n.)
a. the person who had a job or official position before someone else
b. something that has been replaced by another thing
ex: The scheme, like its two predecessors, had little chance to prove itself.

25.speculate(v.)
a. to consider or discuss why something has happened or what might happen
b. to take the risk of investing your money in a company in the hope that you can make a big profit later by selling the shares that you buy
ex: We can only speculate on the reasons for his sudden resignation.
