The Titanic sails again: Australian tycoon unveils plans for perfect replica of doomed vessel

Titanic II's 'safety deck' announced by Clive Palmer, Australian billionaire building the ship.

Titanic II is a proposed ocean liner, to be built as a modern-day replica of the Olympic-class RMS Titanic. The new ship will have a gross tonnage (GT) of 56,000 while the original ship measured about 46,000 gross register tons (GRT)^] The project was announced by Australian billionaire Clive Palmer in April 2012, as the flagship of a proposed cruise company Blue Star Line Pty. Ltd. of Brisbane, Australia.^] The intended launch date was originally set in 2016,^] with the ship sailing from Southampton to New York within the same year^] the launch has been delayed until 2018^].

As with the original ship, there will be First, Second and Third Class cabins and passengers will not be allowed to mingle – apart from on the safety deck, where there will be a casino and theatre.

Passengers will be able to buy a six-day ticket for one class, or a mixed ticket covering two days in each section. Prices have not been set yet although Palmer says he has already had offers from 16 people of between £500,000 and £850,000 (GBP) for berths but has stated that this is nowhere near the prices that would be charged.

Palmer also has said that he is very pleased to have had over 40,000 people express an interest on the internet alone which shows that there is a market out there for people wanting to re-live this magical experience and spend time on-board a ship of this grandeur and class.

The ship will carry 2,435 passengers and so will be asking for 900 plus crew members to service the guests 24/7 so keep checking the website for any potential jobs that may allow you to work on this fantastic vessel.

Professor Palmer outlined his bold vision in which the Titanic II would be 'carrying the hopes and dreams of people everywhere' and represent 'the reconciliation of man'.

There will be capacity for 2,435 passengers and 900 crew.

There will also be lifeboats that can carry 2,700 and a life rafts with an additional capacity of 800.

At the launch of Titanic II, which began with a guitar rendition of Celine Dion's 'My Heart Will Go On', Professor Palmer explained that the ship will be 883ft long, which is three inches longer than the original.

It will have a tonnage of 55,800 tonnes compared to 53,210 of the original.

It will have a maximum speed of 24 knots, the same as the first Titanic.

Other original features which will also appear on Titanic II include the Turkish baths, the Cafe Parisien, the two 'Millioniare Suites', the Chart Room, and the quarters belonging to Titanic Master Captain Edward Smith.

For entertainment guests can enjoy the casino, cinema or shopping area.

The blueprint shows that there will even the same 'Marconi room' where the Titanic sent out its final SOS.

Professor Palmer refused to reveal how much he is paying to build Titanic II but claimed there had already been significant interest, including from celebrities.

He said: '40,000 people had registered for tickets on the ship's website with 16 offering between $750,000 and $1m to be on the opening voyage.'

A Chinese shipyard will help the Titanic finally reach New York, after an order to build a replica of the luxury liner was made by an Australian billionaire.

The deal between State-owned CSC Jinling Shipyard Co Ltd in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, and Australian mining magnate Clive Palmer to build Titanic II is music to the ears of China's shipbuilding industry, which is currently mired in its steepest earnings slump in three years.

According to shipyard spokesman Li Wenbao, the Chinese company signed a memorandum of understanding on April 20 with the Australian tycoon to construct the ship in China.
