1961年3月4日，國務院公佈為第一批國家重點文物保護單位。1965年9月28日，郭沫若題匾“毛澤東舊居”，換下原匾。1982年經黨中央批准，將“舊居”改稱為“故居”，1983年6月27日，改掛鄧小平題寫的“毛澤東同志故居”匾額。
韶山沖毛澤東同志故居位於湖南省湘潭市西北部韶山沖上屋場。1893年，毛澤東在此出生。
1929年，中華民國國民政府沒收並燒毀。1950年按原貌修復。為典型南方住宅形式。 土木結構，泥磚牆，小青瓦，一明二此二梢間，左右各有廂房，廂房進入深度為兩間，還有天井、雜屋等。
座落于茂林修竹、青翠欲滴的小山沖中。房屋系泥磚青瓦，土木結構，是南方常見的普通農家住房。有房屋18間，東邊13間小青瓦房為毛澤東家，西4間茅草房原系毛姓公產，居中堂屋共用。1893年12月26日，毛澤東誕生於此，並在此度過了童年和少年時代。1910年秋，毛澤東離家外出求學。1920年毛澤東父母相繼去世，以後他弟妹也跟隨他出外從事革命活動。

Mao Zedong's Former Residence (simplified Chinese: 毛泽东故居; traditional Chinese: 毛澤東故居; pinyin: Máo Zédōng Gùjū) was built in the late Qing Dynasty. It is located in Shaoshan Village of Shaoshan township in Shaoshan City, Xiangtan prefecture, Hunan Province, China. The building was the birthplace and childhood home of Mao Zedong, the first leader of the People's Republic of China. It has a building area of about 472.92 square meters, embodies buildings such as the old houses (故居老屋), the Mao Zedong Memorial Hall (毛泽东纪念馆), the statue of Mao Zedong (毛泽东铜像), the Cultural relics Exhibition Hall (文物展览馆), Dishui Hole (滴水洞).
Attractions: Chairman Mao's Former Residence in Shaoshan City, Hunan Province Chairman Mao's Former Residence located in Shaoshan City of Hunan Province, is 104 kilometers from Changsha City. When you enter the courtyard, the house is painted a sunny yellow, with mud brick walls, with a nicely thatched roof. The place is located on a wooded hillside, above some lush paddy fields. There are 13 rooms in the former residence, and there is also one and half of a central room, a kitchen, a dining room, three family bedrooms and a guest room. Within the rooms are various personal effects of Mao and his parents, as well as photos from Mao's life. Besides Chairman Mao's former residence, the Ancestral Temple of the Mao Family, now Chairmen Mao's Museum and Stone Steles covered with Mao's poems and a Revolutionary Martyr’s Cemetery can be seen here in the Shaoshan Scenic Area.
