1.approach/v. /əˈprəʊtʃ/
to come near or nearer to something or someone in space, time, quality, or amount.
Ex: If you look out of the window on the left, you'll see that we're now approaching the Eiffel Tower.
2.coat/n. /koʊt/
an outer piece of clothing with sleeves that is worn over other clothes, usually for warmth.
Ex: We need a coat hook on the back of this door.
3.enhance/v. /ɪnˈhɑːns/
to improve the quality, amount, or strength of something.
Ex: These scandals will not enhance the organization's reputation.
4.flame/n. /fleɪm/
burning gas (from something on fire) which produces usually yellow light.
Ex: The flames grew larger as the fire spread.
5.gather/v. /ˈɡæð.ər/
to collect several things, often from different places or people.
Ex: I went to several libraries to gather information about the plans.
6.pity/n. /ˈpɪt̬-/
a feeling of sympathy and understanding for someone else's unhappiness or difficult situation.
Ex: The girl stood gazing in/with pity at the old lion in the cage.
7.scent/n. /sent/
a smell produced by an animal that acts as a signal to other animals.
Ex: The hounds had lost the scent of the fox near the river.
8.slide/v. /slaɪd/
to (cause to) move easily and without interruption over a surface.
Ex: When I was little I used to like sliding on the polished floor in my socks.
9.stem/n. /stem/
a central part of something from which other parts can develop or grow, or which forms a support.
10.stroke/n. /stroʊk/
a sudden change in the blood supply to a part of the brain, sometimes causing a loss of the ability to move particular parts of the body.
Ex: She suffered/had a stroke that left her unable to speak.
11.terrace/n. /ˈter.əs/
a flat area of stone or grass outside a house, where people sit and sometimes eat.
12.thrill/n. /θrɪl/
a feeling of extreme excitement, usually caused by something pleasant.
Ex: It gave me a real thrill to see her again after so many years.
13.agriculture/n. /ˈæɡ.rɪ.kʌl.tʃər/
farming
Ex: Agriculture is still largely based on traditional methods in some countries.
14.devote/v. /dɪˈvəʊt/
to give all of something, especially your time, effort, or love, or yourself, to something you believe in or to a person.
Ex: She has devoted all her energies/life to the care of homeless people.
15.digest/v. /daɪˈdʒest/
to change food in your stomach into substances that your body can use.
Ex: I find that I don't digest meat easily.
16.distinct/adj. /dɪˈstɪŋkt/
clearly noticeable; that certainly exists.
Ex: There's a distinct smell of cigarettes in here.
17.enable/v. /ɪˈneɪ.bl̩/
to make someone able to do something, or to make something possible.
Ex: Computerization should enable us to cut production costs by half.
18.jaw/n /dʒɑː/
the lower part of your face that moves when you open your mouth.
Ex: He has a strong/square jaw.
19.lead/v. /led/
to control a group of people, a country, or a situation.
Ex: I think we've chosen the right person to lead the expedition.
20.mate/n./ meɪt/
an animal's sexual partner.
Ex: Peacocks use their beautiful tails to attract mates.
21.nutritional/adj. /njuːˈtrɪʃən(ə)l/
relating to nutrition.
Ex: Chemical sweeteners have no nutritional value.
22.profound/adj. /prəˈfaʊnd/
felt or experienced very strongly or in an extreme way.
Ex: His mother's death when he was aged six had a very profound effect on him.
23.shift/v. /ʃɪft/
to (cause something or someone to) move or change from one position or direction to another, especially slightly.
Ex: The wind is expected to shift (to the east) tomorrow.
24.underpin/v. /ˌʌn.dəˈpɪn/
to give support, strength, or a basic structure to something.
Ex: He presented the figures to underpin his argument.
25.valid/adj. /ˈvæl.ɪd/
based on truth or reason; able to be accepted.
Ex: My way of thinking might be different from yours, but it's equally valid.
