大聯盟2017年球季將在明年4月3日開打，勞資雙方若未在12月1日前達成協議，資方可能採取封館行動，雙方最大爭執是對國際自由球員選秀的歧見，宋文華今年7月被教士隊簽下，就是其中一個例子。

大聯盟各隊每年為了簽下國際自由球員，砸下不少重金，造成球團薪資預算極大負擔，因此打算透過選秀會，把這個遊戲規則制度化，但球員工會目前還未同意。

紅襪隊去年砸下3150萬美元，簽下古巴新秀孟卡達（Yoan Moncada），還因國際自由球員簽約金總額大幅超過大聯盟官方規定的上限，必須支付相同金額的罰金。

宋文華今年也有相同情況，教士隊以65萬美元簽人，加上罰金在內，形同投資小宋130萬美元。

教士今年國際自由球員簽約金額度是334萬美元，簽下宋文華前早就突破千萬美元，包括小宋在內、超過額度後才簽下的新人，都得支付和簽約金相同的罰款。
