載滿458名遊客的大陸「東方之星」，1日晚間在長江中游沉沒後，不只大陸政府各部門反應迅速，中共解放軍更是「陸海空」全體總動員；除陸軍出動上千名搜救人員外，海軍三大艦隊更第一時間聯合籌組140餘名搜救部隊馳援。此外，空軍方面則派出6架直升機偵察救災現場。
船難發生後，大陸國家主席習近平立即作出重要批示，要求國務院、湖北、重慶及有關方面全力開展搜救。大陸總理李克強昨更親自趕赴船難現場，坐鎮指揮，表明「不惜一切代價，全力救人」的決心。
中共海軍第一時間從北海艦隊、東海艦隊、南海艦隊和海軍工程大學，抽調部分潛水兵力組成140多人搜救部隊。空軍方面也不遑多讓，2日上午9時起，分別派出6架直升機執行災情偵查任務；包括3架直升機和1架伊爾-76飛機已聽令起飛，另外2架直升機則北京起飛。另有3架直升機則在武漢待命出動。
此外，荊州軍分區出動兵力100人、民兵預備役人員1300人、衝鋒舟9艘準備展開搜救；武警湖北總隊、湖南總隊也派出1000多名官兵、48艘救援船在船難事發地兩岸同時展開搜救。
大陸交通運輸部部長楊傳堂說，救援共投入海巡艇、公安艇、社會船舶、衝鋒舟、漁船等共計110艘，參與搜救的解放軍、武警官兵、消防官兵、預備役以及各地人員共4000餘人。
