美國加州具有最自由的空氣、最開放的心懷，吸引全球各式的人才，激發出最創新的科技發展。 加州的面積(423,970平方公里)位列美國第三；人口位列第一(約3800萬)。1850年加入聯邦。「加利福尼亞」可能出自西班牙語，「熱火爐」的意思。1848年，上加利福尼亞的西班牙裔人口大約為4000人。但是當加利福尼亞發現黃金的消息傳開後，無數美國人和歐洲人在淘金熱中湧向加利福尼亞。從加州各地的地名來看，充滿了西班牙味，墨西哥風。

沙加緬度（Sacramento，又譯為薩克拉門托），是一個位於加利福尼亞州中部、沙加緬度河流域上的城市，加州州政府和沙加緬度郡郡政府皆位於此，也是加州在人口上的第五大城。在19世紀中的掏金潮時，沙加緬度是一個重要的人口集散地，也是一個商業和農業中心、和運貨馬車隊、驛站馬車、河輪、電報、驛馬快遞、和第一橫貫大陸鐵路的末端站。Sacramento是來自西班牙語「聖事」之意(英文應是 sacred matter)，是西班牙人最初抵達此區時給加州中央北部山谷和沙加緬度河起的名字`。Sutter 是一位早期在此屯墾的瑞士人，在此取得了一大片土地來開發，建了Fort Sutter，舊金山為紀念他，有一條街叫 Sutter Street，後來Fort Sutter發展成市鎮後Sacramento也成為了市名。

位於加州的中央山谷（Central Valley）是該州農業生產的黃金地段，中央山谷面積非常大，沿著太平洋海岸方向綿延650公里，其面積為加利福尼亞州北部的2/3，西側是太平洋海岸地區，東側是內華達山脈（Sierra Nevada (Spanish for "snow-covered mountain range")）。

實際上，中央山谷由兩個山谷構成，為北部的沙加緬度河谷（Sacramento Valley）和南部的聖華金河谷（San Joaquin Valley），它們在沙加緬度和聖華金河三角洲（Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta）處彙聚在一起，沙加緬度和聖華金河三角洲被認定是舊金山灣（San Francisco bays）自然延伸的結果。這裡的表層土壤為沖積沉積物。

聖華金河（San Joaquin River)是加州第二長河，發源於內華達山脈西坡，向西流經聖華金峽谷後，在安條克(Antioch)注入沙加緬度河。聖華金河全長530公里，流域面積約83,000平方公里。 joaquin 音 Wa Keen from Spanish language。

舊金山（San Francisco），正式名稱為舊金山市郡（City and County of San Francisco），是加州北部的一座都市，也是加州唯一市郡合一的行政區，中文又音譯為三藩市。位於舊金山半島的北端，東臨舊金山灣、西臨太平洋，人口約83萬，為加州第四大城。其與南邊的聖馬刁郡(San Mateo)、南灣的聖荷西與矽谷地區、東灣的奧克蘭與柏克萊、以及北邊的馬林郡(Marin)與納帕郡（Napa）合稱為舊金山灣區(Bay Area)。

歐洲人在1542年到舊金山灣區，舊金山區域在16世紀屬於西班牙的上加利福尼亞省領土。西班牙將領唐嘉斯帕·德伯爾托拉（Don Gaspar de Portola）於1769年帶領他的屬下在舊金山灣區探索地形。1776年3月28日，西班牙探險家胡安·鮑提斯塔·德·安薩（Juan Bautista de Anza）在當地選了兩個可建築地點，一個作為軍事用途，另一個則作為傳教用途，但實質的施工卻由安扎的兩名同伴Jose Joaquin Moraga中尉及Francisco Palóu神父監督。Jose Joaquin Moraga負責建立的是軍事基地舊金山要塞（Presidio of San Francisco，現已改為要塞公園）。Francisco Palóu則負責建立的是教會，他將該地命名為聖方濟各傳教站（Misión San Francisco de Asís），該區所有的一切行政事務皆經由教會管理。1821年，墨西哥自西班牙獨立，上加利福尼亞也成為墨西哥領土。墨西哥和美國戰爭爆發後，美國海軍准將約翰·斯洛特（John D. Sloat）帶領手下來到這裡，1846年以美國名義佔領此城。1847年1月30日，海軍上校約翰·蒙哥馬利（John B. Montgomery）將城市更名為舊金山。

聖塔克拉拉郡（County of Santa Clara）位於舊金山灣區的南部，也是俗稱矽谷的高科技產業集中地點的所在地。在十五世紀，曾經有英國、西班牙探險隊到達該地區，在之後的幾百年里，該地曾經由西班牙人統治，在此期間第一座城市聖荷西誕生。1846年7月14日，美國軍隊占領了聖荷西。而包括該地在內的整個加利福尼亞州於1848年歸屬美國(建州是1850年，但在1848年納入美國，領地條件成熟後成為州)。根據2010年美國人口普查，聖塔克拉拉郡共有178萬1642人居住在此。聖荷西市為郡政府所在地，也是郡裡人口和面積最大的城市。該郡下屬有15個城市，首府為聖荷西，還有 坎貝爾（Campbell）、 庫比蒂諾 (Cupertino)、洛思阿圖斯 (Los Altos)、山景城 (Mountain View)、帕羅奧圖 (Palo Alto)、聖塔克拉拉 (Santa Clara)、森尼韋爾 (Sunnyvale)....。聖荷西是加州的第三大城，僅次於洛杉磯和聖地牙哥，有矽谷首都（Capital of Silicon Valley）這個別名。

San Diego、 San Francisco、 San Jose 之類的都有San 是因為之前還是墨西哥土地的時候，每一個區域是由神父來管理，San 在spanish裡面是saint的意思也就是聖人，在這裡是指神父。Santa是San的陰性形式， feminine的就是修女。Los就是英语裡的the。los 通常用在plural masculinity 的東西上面. Las 用在feminine的plural 的名詞前面 (Las Vegas)。在spanish裡面， 通常a結尾的名詞是feminine， 所以用las。用San 開頭作地名的好處是翻成中文後都是以"聖"字為始，無形中增加了地方的好名聲。舊金山的常規翻法應是聖法蘭西斯柯。用了 複數形定冠詞，也就說明為何洛杉磯與拉斯維加斯是以s結尾，西班牙語複數規則是： 母音結尾＋s、子音結尾＋es。以中國人為例： 陽性單數 chino 、陰性單數 china、陽性複數 chinos、陰性複數 chinas。定冠詞：單數(陽性/陰性) el/la、 複數 los/las； 不定冠詞：單數 un/una、複數 unos/unas。西班牙語 J (j) 讀 國語「喝」的前音，小舌要震動。H (h) 不發音。

1、斯坦福大學(Stanford University)
是一 所私立大學，其在 2014 年 Usnews 最新美國大學綜合排名第 5 名，被認為是世界上最傑出 的大學之一。根據 1995 年的資料，斯坦福大學1300多位教授中，有十位諾貝爾獎得主， 五位普利策獎得主，142位美國藝術科學院院士，84位國家科學院院士 和14位國家科學獎得主，美國最高法院的 9 個大法官， 有 6 個是從斯坦福大學的法學院畢業的。

2. 加州大學伯克利分校(University of California-Berkeley)

12/1/13 加州在2010年的經濟產值達1.9兆美元，領先印度。人口3750萬的加州，讓巴西迎頭趕上，滑落到全球第9大經濟體。

12/3/2 以2010年的人口數計算，南加州拉丁裔族群明顯成長，占人口比例的45%，亞裔族群也增加到13%。白人從將近半數的人口比例，下降到只有1/3；非裔黑人則從原本的8%，下降到不到7%。亞裔人口數約有240萬人，拉丁裔則有多達800萬人。

14/2/21 加利福尼亞州是美國人口最多的州，現有常住人口3800萬。2012年，加州GDP達到2萬億美元，介於全球GDP排位第八的義大利和排位第九的俄羅斯之間。

14/5/23 美國聖塔芭芭拉加州大學（ＵＣＳＢ）外圍維斯塔島社區晚間九時卅分左右發生槍擊案，一名持半自動手槍的男子開車沿街濫射，包括槍手在內共七人死亡，另有七人受傷，槍手頭部中彈。兇嫌是廿二歲的 Santa Barbara City College學生， His mother is a Malaysian research assistant for a film company, and his father is British filmmaker。His stepmother is Moroccan actress。All six murder victims were students at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB).

14/10/27 在美国南加州大学附近枪杀两名中国留学生的杰维尔·博尔登被判定一级谋杀罪名成立，可能面临终身监禁。博尔登现年22岁，与21岁的同伙布赖恩·巴恩斯于2012年4月11日枪杀中国女留学生吴某和男留学生瞿某。吴某和瞿某是情侣，原本打算结婚。他们遇害时均为23岁，为南加大工程学院电子工程专业二年级研究生。

这两名疑犯是非洲裔美国人。博尔登被捕后拒绝认罪，但在关押期间向一名“狱友”夸耀自己打死那两名中国留学生，讲述他和巴恩斯如何策划抢夺遇害人的汽车。不料，这名“狱友”是警方线人，悄悄把这些话录了下来。

这所大学今年7月再次发生中国留学生遇袭死亡的案件，民众质疑校方和警方安保措施是否足够。一名男性中国留学生7月24日凌晨在校园附近遭4名歹徒用棍棒等钝器殴打，回到自己的寓所后死亡。4名凶手已落网，他们拒不认罪，其中两人年龄不满18周岁。南加大在校生总计3.8万人，近五分之一为留学生，中国留学生大约2500人。南加大说，美国所有高校中，这所大学留学生最多。

15/1/6 美国第一条高速铁路本周在加利福尼亚州中部的弗雷斯诺市破土动工。此次率先开工的是中部马德拉至弗雷斯诺的４６公里路段。之后，工程将由弗雷斯诺向南修建至贝克斯菲尔德，覆盖183公里。整个中部路段预期2018年完工。

习惯于自己开车在四通八达的高速公路上自由驰骋的美国人，对高铁缺乏兴趣；美国地广人稀，也使得专家们对高铁的经济效益持怀疑态度。美国对高铁最感兴趣的有两个人，一个是总统奥巴马，一个是加州州长布朗。奥巴马第二个任期开始时提出的发展高铁计划遭到各州的冷落，唯有加州的布朗州长35年前第一次当选州长时，就大做高铁梦。于是奥巴马与布朗一拍即合，共同成为加州高铁的推手。

加州高铁全长1287公里，预期2029年全线建成。总投资680亿美元，联邦政府拨款30亿，州政府通过发行公债筹集100亿，其余的建设费用州政府通过由今年开始实施的对石油公司碳排配额管制与交易来筹集。

加州高铁开工也意味着反对高铁的新的抗议活动开始：加州中部农业区，农民抗议高铁穿越他们的农田，扰乱了他们的宁静生活；都会区将有居民阻止高铁穿过自己的城市。布朗州长的高铁梦包括一连串的噩梦。

15/3/3 Steve Wozniak, who received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley in 1986, has been selected as the 2015 Alumnus of the Year by the Cal Alumni Association (CAA), UC Berkeley’s alumni association.  

Jobs and Wozniak became friends when Jobs worked for the summer at Hewlett-Packard, where Wozniak too was employed, working on a mainframe computer. Also in 1971 Wozniak withdrew from the University of California, Berkeley, only one year after enrolling. In 1973, Jobs was working for arcade game company Atari, Inc. in Los Gatos, California. He was assigned to create a circuit board for the arcade video game Breakout. Jobs had little knowledge of circuit board design and made a deal with Wozniak if Wozniak could minimize the number of chips. Wozniak reduced the number of chips by 50 by using RAM for the brick representation. On June 29, 1975 Wozniak tested his first working prototype, displaying a few letters and running sample programs. It was the first time in history that a character displayed on a TV screen was generated by a home computer. In 1976, Wozniak developed the computer that eventually made him famous. He alone designed the hardware, circuit board designs, and operating system for the Apple I. After the success of the Apple I, Wozniak designed the Apple II, the first personal computer that had the ability to display color graphics, and BASIC programming language built-in.

15/6/13 台灣大學舉行畢業典禮，邀請校友、中央研究院院士孟懷縈擔任致辭貴賓，孟懷縈以自己成功的創業經驗，以及遭歧視女性不如男性的經歷，期許學弟妹要體驗人生、擴大胸懷，要離開熟悉的環境並接受挑戰，同時要公平對待他人，孟懷縈最後以「傲骨不可無、傲心不可有」，提醒學弟妹若沒有骨氣，在社會做久終將成為小人，若有驕傲心態，永遠成不了君子，也希望學弟妹要平等對待所有人，要持續不斷的學習，智能與胸懷才會與日俱增。

1983年從台大電機系畢業的孟懷縈於1988年取得柏克萊加州大學電機博士學位，同年即獲聘史丹佛大學電機系任教。現為史丹佛大學教授，也是創銳訊(Atheros)通訊公司創辦人，年僅27歲即獲聘在史丹佛大學電機系，34歲拿到終身教職，她領先業界研發出第一顆全由CMOS製造的5GHz射頻晶片，2007年當選為美國國家工程學院院士，2010年當選為中研院院士，為當屆最年輕的院士，當時年僅46歲。創銳訊通訊公司2011年以30億元美金被高通併購。北一女畢業。
(.：作出這樣的成績，讓人不佩服也不行，高速無線網路促成人類生活翻天覆地的改變。美國這個國家的最強項就是對有實力、有表現的人給與最快、最大的 reward。)

(注：戴宏杰教授长期从事碳纳米材料的生长合成、物理性质研究、纳米电子器件研发，以及纳米生物医学以及能源材料等方面的研究，在上述领域都取得了卓越的成就。1966年出生于湖南邵阳，早年毕业于清华大学，1992年戴宏杰进入美国哈佛大学攻读博士，博士毕业后师从美国来斯大学诺贝尔奖提名人开展博士后研究（导师第二年获诺贝尔奖）。两年后，进入美国斯坦福大学大学担任助理教授、副教授。2002年被评为终身教授，是该校最年轻的终身教授。戴宏杰教授以其在纳米材料研究中的突出贡献2009年被评选为美国艺术与科学院（American Academy of Arts and Science）院士。2011年2月入选全球顶尖一百化学家名人堂榜单，总排名第7，为华人第1。)

(.：這三人這麼年輕就取得終身教授的原因之一是他門都沒有當兩年兵，所以早了一點。但重點是可見在美國看重的是實力，尤其是史丹佛，在高手雲集的地方，有沒有實力是最快、最權威被認定的，年齡這因素根本不需考慮，道理很簡單，如果我是頂尖高手，而這小子比我還厲害，當然他就是頂尖高手，沒有什麼好懷疑的。而這點也是世界的高手要去美國發展的原因。當然，高手的競爭也是很殘酷的，敗下陣的就只有回鄉休養了。)
(.：當然，最值得思索的是，如果孟小姐台大電機系畢業後沒有去美國留學，而是決定留在台灣台大電機系攻讀碩士、博士，他會設計出第一顆全由CMOS製造的5GHz射頻晶片嗎？第二個問題是，如果沒去柏克萊、史丹佛而去了其他美國學校，他會設計出來嗎？)

(.：看來應該把更多注意力放在舊金山、史丹佛大學、柏克萊大學，這個區域是全球高科技的龍頭。矽谷的威力將史丹佛推向更高的高度。)
(.：現在回想起來，DEC的關張，Intel + Microsoft  及 Apple的興起，對美國東北部資訊科技帶來極大的衝擊，甚至，影響了MIT。 之後，Google、Facebook 都在西海岸起步。HP和史丹佛很有關係，還活著，Sun已不見蹤影，被Oracle吃了。)

15/6/18 美國加州地區用水有四成仰賴地下水，近來加州大旱，地下水供水比率提高達六成；專家估計，今年底前比率恐達百分之百，也就是加州所有用水皆靠地下水，然而管制地下水抽水的相關法令最快要廿年方可全面生效。

15/6/19 加州是地中海氣候，亦即大部分降雨集中在10月至次年3月六個月。事實上，加州80%的降雨集中在寒冷月份，，即使夏季降雨，因氣溫太高，雨水迅速蒸發，因此無助於雨水的儲存。 加州環保、農業和城市供水大部分仰賴161個貯水區，這些貯水區通常在冬季貯滿水，但是至今年5月31日，經過一個冬季貯水只增加不到650萬畝呎(acre-feet)，是通常增加820萬畝呎的78%。全美旱象最嚴重的九大城市全都在加州，加州今年是連續第四年鬧旱災，需水之孔急前所未見。加州持續長久的旱災，已為該州農業、城市供水系統、環境和一般民眾帶來嚴重惡果。此外，加州嚴重乾旱也帶來經濟上的衝擊，加州中央谷地、也是全美最重要的農業區之一，因為缺水，至少將損失41萬英畝農地。

15/6/27 截至2014年7月1日止，全美亞裔人口達2030萬人，比2013年7月1日的亞裔人口增加3.2%，增幅為同期所有族裔之冠；其中加州亞裔人口，以630萬人居全美之首，加州同時也是12個月期間，全美亞裔人口增加最多的州。在單一城市的亞裔人數方面，擁有170萬亞裔人口的洛杉磯，是全美亞裔人口最多的城市，2013年7月1日至2014年7月1日，洛杉磯亞裔人數增加2.9萬人，為全美亞裔增加人數最多的城市。

15/6/28 Amtrak’s San Joaquin rail line, the fifth-busiest passenger-train corridor in the U.S., will be under new management starting Wednesday.

Control of the San Joaquin trains, which last year carried almost 1.2 million passengers, is being assumed by the San Joaquin Joint Powers Authority. The authority, formed about two years ago to increase local control over the service, is taking over from the California Department of Transportation’s Division of Rail. The agency is made up of representatives from counties and regional transportation agencies along the train’s route between Bakersfield, Oakland and Sacramento.

Passengers who ride the trains on either an occasional or regular basis are unlikely to notice any difference in the travel experience, because Amtrak will continue to run the trains under an operating contract. And while Caltrans will keep providing the money to support the service, the oversight and policymaking will become the responsibility of the regional authority. The authority has contracted with the San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission — which operates the Altamont Commuter Express (ACE) trains between Stockton and San Jose — to handle day-to-day operational supervision and administration.

One of the first orders of business will be to establish a long-sought additional train to the roster of 12 daily trains — six northbound, six southbound — that have been offered since 2002. Of the six daily round trips, four run between Bakersfield and Oakland, while the other two run between Bakersfield and Sacramento.

The formation of the new rail agency isn’t so much a declaration of independence from Caltrans as it is a declaration of codependence, modeled upon the 1998 formation of the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority to take over management of the Capitol Corridor train line between Auburn and San Jose from Caltrans. The state ponies up the financing for the service, and the regional authority handles the administrative chores.

The San Joaquin rail authority isn’t alone in seeking greater control over the passenger train service in its region. The LOSSAN (Los Angeles/San Diego/San Luis Obispo) Rail Corridor Agency is taking over management of the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains from Caltrans. The transfer of the San Joaquin and Pacific Surfliner trains to regional agencies now means that all three of the state-supported Amtrak lines — including the Capitol Corridor — are under local governance.

In 1998, when the Capitol Corridor JPA was established, Caltrans and Amtrak operated eight daily Capitol Corridor trains — the same number as on the San Joaquin line. By last year, the regional authority managed to nearly quadruple the number of daily trains on the Capitol Corridor to 30 between Sacramento and Oakland and 14 between Oakland and San Jose. In the meantime, Caltrans increased the number of daily trains on the San Joaquin line only from eight to 12.

15/7/3 舊金山兩個電視臺的新聞記者在街頭報道一起謀殺案時遭到搶劫。這起搶劫案發生在早晨六點，KTVU電視臺的記者Cara Liu正在進行現場直播，突然有人搶走了另一家電視臺KNTV的錄影機設備，同時該臺的攝像師亞倫‧韋普斯被劫匪用槍柄毆打。KNTV的記者克裏斯‧桑切斯和54歲攝像師亞倫‧韋普斯被一名年輕男子持槍搶劫。劫匪來到韋普斯身後，用槍指著他的頭，而後搶走了錄影機，並將韋普斯推倒在地，用槍柄打了韋普斯的耳部，造成他手臂和耳朵受傷。由於近年來美國各主要電視臺的記者陸續碰到搶劫事件，現在許多記者在出外採訪時會配備保安人員，而在奧克蘭夜間採訪時會更加謹慎。

15/7/10 广达的美国工厂位于硅谷东面的加州费利蒙市（Fremont)，面积约为1个半足球场大小，每10~15分钟就有一台服务器从生产线上源源不断的生产出来。朴素的外壳上既没有厂家也没有品牌名称，甚至从外面能看到整个主板。这一天生产的服务器将提供给亚马逊（amazon.com）和微软。该工厂2009年投产，是广达的美国战略基地。除了费利蒙工厂外，2014年开始广达田纳西州纳什维尔工厂也开始生产服务器。广达在美国的东部和西部均设立了生产基地，确保了服务器的供货体制。

15/8/1 《末日崩塌》(San Andreas》(台灣片名「加州大地震」) 是美国华纳兄弟影片公司于2015年发行的一部灾难电影。影片讲述了一场大地震从洛杉矶一直延伸至旧金山。

圣安德烈亚斯断层带位于太平洋板块和北美板块之间，纵贯加州。所以加州是世界最高发地震的地区之一。1994年1月17日发生在洛杉矶附近的里氏6.7级北岭大地震，是加州距今最近的大地震，造成72人死亡，损失高达250亿美元。旧金山所在北加州也不消停。去年8月，北部帕纳地区发生6.1级地震。1989年旧金山附近普列塔山发生6.9级地震；1906年，圣安德烈亚斯断层引发的一场7.8级大地震突袭旧金山，这个城市成为一片废墟，造成3000人死亡。

15/8/2 Facebook发布了新的无人机Aquila，其外形酷似美国空军的B2轰炸机，不过翼展与波音737相似。Facebook未来计划成为互联网运营商，为发展中国家提供互联网接入服务。目前，这款新的无人机还在测试之中。Aquila的重量仅在880磅到1000磅之间，部署之后，它可以在60000至90000 英尺的高度盘旋长达90天，为偏远地区的人们提供互联网接入。这意味着该飞机的飞行高度要高于一般商用飞机的高度。

15/8/2 BART Silicon Valley is a 16-mile, six-station extension of the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system beginning at the future Warm Springs Station in Fremont and proceeding alongside the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR), extending south into Santa Clara County, with stations in Milpitas, San Jose and Santa Clara.

The BART Silicon Valley project will be constructed in phases, with the first phase defined as the northernmost 10-mile, two-station Berryessa Extension from Fremont, through Milpitas, into the Berryessa district of north San Jose. Two new BART stations will be constructed as part of the Berryessa Extension; the Milpitas BART Station located between Montague Expressway and Capitol Avenue in the City of Milpitas and the Berryessa BART Station located between Berryessa Road and Mabury Road in the City of San Jose.

15/8/3 The City of Livermore and the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) District are currently working to extend BART service to Livermore. Livermore residents have been clear that they want full BART service in the I-580 median with ample parking. The City of Livermore is championing this vision. The project will help reduce traffic on I-580 and ensure Livermore gets its fair share of regional tax dollars. Livermore residents have been paying taxes for BART operations since its inception.

15/8/11  加州久旱不雨，人口四百万的洛杉矶市想方设法节约用水，他们刚部署完成的省水工具，是九千六百万个塑料球。洛杉矶市民日常用水仰赖的洛杉矶水库(Los Angeles Reservoir)上面漂浮密密麻麻的黑色塑料球。这些塑料球可防日晒，防蒸发，防藻类滋生，又可在水面形成保护层，所花费的钱比原先想要采用的覆盖水库项目少的多。

防晒球项目的经费为3450万美元，所有的塑料球都在加州制造，每个36美分。黑球直径约十公分，覆盖了洛杉矶水库71公顷的水面，阻断藻类的光合作用，减少致癌物质的产生，提升饮水品质，减少蒸发，估计每年可省水三亿加仑，足够供应8100人一年的饮水。

15/8/12 油價大跌，美國消費力道反而變得更為疲軟，原因何在？美國房東開出的房租月租金中間價第 2 季達到創紀錄的 803 美元，美國 6 月民間平均週薪是 705 美元，也就是說租屋族每個月得拿出 29% 的薪資所得來支付租金。房租的節節高漲顯然已排擠到其他消費支出。

15/8/14 這次綽號「李小龍」（Bruce Lee）的聖嬰現象，到目前為止已是歷來第二強烈，仍可能繼續發展成史上最強。今年的聖嬰始於3月，預料會持續約一年的時間。聖嬰現象開始時，東太平洋的水溫會比平常升高，逐漸影響全球氣候，以美國來說，可能導致加州與南方冬季氣溫的陡降。但聖嬰現象也和澳洲、印度的乾旱有關，太平洋的颶風會變多（大西洋則變少），整個地球會變暖。太平洋目前情況顯示，這次的聖嬰可能和1997年到1998年綽號酷斯拉的聖嬰匹敵。酷斯拉讓加州冬季氣溫陡降，帶來暴量雨水，導致水患、土石流的災害，長留加州民眾記憶之中。

15/8/17 A magnitude 4.0 earthquake was reported Monday morning in Piedmont, Calif., near Oakland. The temblor occurred at 6:49 a.m. Pacific time at a depth of 3.1 miles. According to the USGS, the epicenter was two miles from Emeryville, Calif., three miles from Oakland, three miles from Berkeley. The quake was felt most strongly on the East Bay, including Oakland, Berkeley and surrounding areas. Lesser shaking was felt in San Francisco.

15/8/17 Southern California was hot, really hot. The sweltering heat in Palm Springs would have sent Elvis Presley’s temperature rising. Temperatures hit 115 degrees there Sunday, tying a record set in 1994. Riverside and Campo were a blistering 107 degrees, breaking records of 106 set it 1992 and 1962, respectively.

In Los Angeles County, four record highs were set Sunday. Long Beach was 96 degrees, topping  the old record of 95 degrees in 1992. Sandberg, near Gorman, reached 99 degrees; the old record was 98 degrees in 1994.
Burbank hit 102 degrees, up 2 degrees from 1992 and 2000. And the hottest L.A. County city was Lancaster, where temperatures reached 108 degrees, up from 107 in 2002. In Ventura County, Camarillo hit 87 degrees, tying a record set in 2000.

15/8/20 [LAT] Another toll of the drought: Land is sinking fast in San Joaquin Valley, study shows

Farmland near Corcoran in the southern San Joaquin Valley sank 13 inches in just eight months last year. To the north, near El Nido, the land surface dropped about 10 inches. Along a major canal near Los Banos, the ground has sunk so much that the concrete sides cracked. Nearby, a bridge over another canal had dropped so low it had to be demolished and replaced with a higher structure.

Groundwater over-pumping is causing some parts of the San Joaquin Valley to sink faster than ever. Indeed, Californias transformation over the last 35 years is closer to that of Americas cities than it is to that of any other state. As Republicans have won statehouse after statehouse, Democrats have prevailed in most major cities. Today, a record number — 25 of the 30 largest U.S. cities — have Democratic mayors.

Two factors that should sound familiar in California have moved the cities leftward. The first is racial recomposition. Between 1980 and 2010, census data show the percentage of whites in New York City dropped from 53% to 37%; in Los Angeles, from 48% to 29%; in Houston, from 53% to 26%; in Phoenix, from 78% to 47%; in Columbus, Ohio, from 76% to 59%. The second is the emergence of new urban coalitions, with unions, immigrant rights groups, African American community organizations and environmental groups at their core, and bolstered by the growing support of white millennials.

And to California — the mega-state that, politically, is effectively a mega-city.

15/8/22  A 4.0 preliminary magnitude earthquake shook the area east of Mammoth Lakes Saturday morning. The tremor struck in what has historically been a very seismically active region, and a region known for continuing volcanic activity. The quake hit at a relatively shallow depth of just over 4 miles beneath the surface. Mammoth Lakes is a town in Mono County, California.

Huge flows of vapor in the atmosphere, dubbed "atmospheric rivers," have unleashed massive floods every 200 years, and climate change could bring more of them.

在海洋上空形成的巨大水氣帶，每200年會引起一次加州大洪水，而氣候變遷可能讓情況雪上加霜。地質證據顯示，美國加州過去大約每200年就因暴雨而發生一次真正的大洪水。最近一次發生於1861年，加州因而破產。科學家以1861年的洪水為藍本，模擬了一個規模較小的巨大暴風雨，名為ARkStorm。他們發現，如果這樣的暴風雨降在今日的加州，可能迫使100萬人以上無家可歸，並造成4000億美元的損失。

針對大範圍沉積物的最新研究顯示，至少過去2000年來，這種災難規模的洪水每200年左右就會淹沒加州一次。在1861~62年的暴風雨中遭殃的，還有墨西哥北部、美國加州南部到加拿大卑詩省的沿海地區，慘況為史上之最。氣候科學家現在假設，當年的加州大水災以及發生在世界上其他地區的類似事件，起因都是「大氣長河」（atmospheric river），這現象你也許從未聽說過。科學家認為，加州還會再度變成一片汪洋。

大氣長河是大氣中的水氣長流，形成於大約1.6公里的高空，寬度只有400公里，卻綿延數千公里長，有時甚至橫跨整個大洋，例如太平洋。這些水氣輸送帶把相當於10~15條密西西比河的水量，從熱帶搬運到中緯度地區，行至美國西岸，撞上內陸山脈，例如內華達山脈，便被迫上升、冷卻並凝結成大量的降水。

1998年1月，美國國家海洋暨大氣總署（NOAA）的環境技術實驗室啟動了加州登陸噴流（CALJET）計畫，目的是更精準預報侵襲加州沿岸的大型暴風雨。該實驗室的氣象學家芮爾夫（Marty Ralph）等人搭乘特殊配備的飛機飛到北太平洋上空，進入一個逼近美國的冬季風暴內直接測量。他們形容這個暴風雨是「噴流」，即高風速區。研究人員發現，單是這個才形成沒幾天的暴風雨，就攜帶了中緯度地區向北極移動的大氣中近20%的水氣。噴流集中在海面上方高達1.6公里的高空，地面上的傳統氣象觀測方式很難辨認出來。

同樣在1998年，當時在MIT朱勇（Yong Zhu）與已故氣象學家 Reginald Newell，從歐洲中期天氣預報中心（European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts）模擬的全球風與水氣模式中，察覺到不尋常的特徵。他們發現，在熱帶地區以外，所有朝兩極傳送的水氣中，平均約有95%集中在五或六道狹窄區帶內。這些水氣帶從西向東橫跨中緯度地區，隨機分佈在全球各地，為了描述這些水氣帶，他們創造了「大氣長河」這個詞。

15/8/23 The Sacramento River is the principal river of Northern California, and is the largest river in California.  Rising in the Klamath Mountains, the river flows south for 716 km before reaching the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta and San Francisco Bay. The river drains about 71,000 km2 in 19 California counties, mostly within a region bounded by the Coast Ranges and Sierra Nevada known as the Sacramento Valley, but also extending as far as the volcanic plateaus of Northeastern California. Historically, its watershed has reached farther, as far north as south-central Oregon where the now, primarily, endorheic (closed) Goose Lake rarely experiences southerly outflow into the Pit River, the most northerly tributary of the Sacramento.

15/8/26 The bid book for the 2024 Olympics that Los Angeles officials released  laid out an initial blueprint for 30 or so proposed venues. A renovated Coliseum will serve as the centerpiece, with other facilities arranged in five clusters across the city.

15/8/30 California, the fourth-biggest U.S. producer of crude, behind Louisiana, Texas and Alaska. "In the Middle East you might have 300 barrels of oil per cubic acre, but in the Los Angeles Basin you might have 4,000 barrels per cubic acre, says Mike Edwards, vice president of Denver-based Venoco Inc.

California has been producing oil commercially since 1874, most of it from Kern County in the San Joaquin Basin around Bakersfield, a city 177 kilometers northwest of Los Angeles.  The state pumped 243.2 million barrels from onshore and offshore sources in 2007. Los Angeles County had 3,400 of Californias 50,856 wells in operation in 2007.

California has 3 billion recoverable barrels, according to the conservation department. Thats equivalent to 4 percent of North American proved oil reserves. Almost 8 percent of the states onshore output in 2007 came from the Los Angeles Basin. About 30,000 wells have been drilled since oil production began in the Los Angeles basin more than 130 years ago, producing 8.6 billion barrels from active wells.

15/9/2 Google、Amazon、Netflix、Cisco、Intel、Microsoft、和 Mozilla宣布結盟（Alliance for Open Media），將聯手開發新的媒體格式，先從免收授權費的影音開始著手。先開發新的影音媒體格式將專為網路影音串流設計，希望能讓影片更適合在低耗能的裝置播放，也將支援防拷機制，而且不用授權費。

蘋果公司尚未加入這個聯盟。蘋果需要考慮開放的專屬影像資產可能比該聯盟的成員多。專屬影像資產包括受著作權保護的資料，以及使用專利製程的影像播放軟體。

即時影音隨Periscope和臉書等服務而大行其道，使用者自製的影片則經由YouTube、Vimeo.com等網站持續受民眾歡迎。同時，好萊塢影視業仍緊抓著專屬影音資產不放。聯盟成員指出，專利授權的費用高昂，不僅妨礙專屬影音的散布，也不利於為專屬影音打造播放器。MPEG LA 公司則說，賦予技術專利權保護，使影音格式和搭配這些格式的播放器從中受益。

Panasonic currently produces the electric-vehicle batteries for Tesla in Osaka Prefecture. The two companies are also building a massive battery plant in the U.S. state of Nevada. The $5 billion facility will be completed in 2020, with a portion of the plant to go online next year.

To increase production of the high-end Model S sedan and the Model X sport utility vehicle, Tesla is working to expand its production capacity in California to over 50,000 vehicles annually by the end of the year, up from 35,000 at the start of 2015. Separately, the companys second plant opened in September in the Netherlands. So Teslas global capacity will grow to nearly 100,000 units. To put this figure into perspective, the worlds best-selling electric vehicle, the Nissan Leaf, sold 60,000 units last year.

15/9/5 美國警察主要分為聯邦、州和市(Municipal)縣(County)三級，聯邦和各州的警察分別行使聯邦和州所賦予的警察權力。州以下的警察的權力則由各州自行決定，除了聯邦警察外，州警察、城市警察和縣警察與聯邦政府沒有任何的從屬上下關係，乃是直接由地方政府所領導。

美國城市警察執法機構都是受到城市行政機構管轄的，但是在具體管理形式上聯邦政府則沒有統一的規定，在採用獨任市長制的城市裡，城市警察局機構由市長負責，而在採用議會制的城市裡，警察機構由警察委員會領導。縣警察局是根據美國各州的法律成立的，各州的法律對縣警察局長的任期和產生辦法都有明文規定。各縣警察機構的主管人均由選舉產生，縣警察局長比其他地方政府官員具有更高的自主權，大多數警察局長是該地區威望較高的人。

美國公民無論擁有何等學歷，如欲從事警職，均須入警察學校(訓練中心)受訓，從基層警員做起。規模較大之警察機關普遍設有警察學校，而一般郡縣警察都附設有警察訓練機構；另亦有由幾個中、小城市合設警察學校(訓練中心)者。各警察學校教育期間大多為四至六個月。

15/9/6 Local government in the United States refers to governmental jurisdictions below the level of the state. Most states have at least two tiers of local government: counties and municipalities. Counties form the first-tier administrative division of the states. In some states, counties are divided into townships. There are several different types of jurisdictions at the municipal level, including the city, town, borough, and village. The types and nature of these municipal entities varies from state to state.

Californias counties are governed by an elected five-member Board of Supervisors(類似董事會), who appoint executive officers(類似總經理) to manage the various functions of the county. In San Francisco, there is an eleven-member Board of Supervisors, but the executive branch of the government is headed by an elected mayor, department heads are responsible to the mayor, and there is both a city police department and a county sheriff, the latter mostly responsible for operating the county jail and for most jail bookings. Californias judicial system is organized along county lines, but the county courts are a part of the state court system, and are not part of the county government.

As of 1 July 2011, there were 482 incorporated municipalities in the state. Under California law, the terms "city" and "town" are explicitly interchangeable; the name of an incorporated municipality in the state can either be "City of (Name)" or "Town of (Name)". Counties exercise the powers of cities in unincorporated areas.

Incorporated cities and towns have the power to levy taxes. They are responsible for providing police service, zoning(土地使用類別劃分), issuing building permits, and maintaining public streets. Municipalities may also provide parks, public housing, and various utility services. Incorporated cities may promulgate ordinances which are usually codified in a city code, and violations of the ordinances are misdemeanor crimes unless otherwise specified as an infraction.

15/9/9 美國國稅局未批准雅虎免稅分拆阿里巴巴集團股權交易的計劃。雅虎表示，仍會尋求其他途徑繼續進行股權分拆的計劃。雅虎公司是在今年1月份宣佈這個分拆計劃的，其目的是為了向股東返還現金。2月，雅虎請求美國國稅局對這一分拆交易做出明確定性。國稅局表示，出於分拆目的，將小型經營性業務捆綁至一家大公司，這樣的做法存在爭議。虎計劃剝離阿里巴巴的3.84億股股票，約佔後者15%的股份。根據阿里巴巴最新股票報價60.93美元，上述股票價值大約為235億美元。對於雅虎公司來説，免稅分拆阿里巴巴集團股權交易的計劃若得不到美國國稅局的批准，將會給公司所持阿里巴巴股票兌現預期蒙上陰影。

15/9/11 美國國務院發布的移民排期表(Visa Bulletin)出現重大改革，在從今年10月開始的2016財政年度，新設定「遞件排期」，允許美國公民及移民服務局(USCIS)提前接受部分親屬移民和職業移民的綠卡申請(I-485)，可先行審批、待移民排期有效時再發出綠卡。申請人可望大幅縮短等待時間。

以往只有在排期到了之後才能遞交I-485申請，如今凡是I-140獲得批准的申請人，可以根據遞件排期表提前遞交調整身分申請，當事人可提前換工作、家屬可以提前就業，全家可提前取得回美紙(Advance Parole)。不過，提前遞交的申請，不會被提前批准，申請人要等到移民排期到了之後，才能取得綠卡。

15/9/11 The U.S. Climate Prediction Center said the equatorial Pacific Ocean remained abnormally warm while weakened trade winds allowed waters to continue heating — with both at levels observed before monster storms smacked California during the wet El Niño winters of 1997-98 and 1982-83.

While the current El Niño brings no guarantee of rain, history shows that the stronger the weather pattern, the greater the chance of precipitation in California, particularly in the southern part of the state. And this one is robust.

15/9/14 中方在美国注册成立的中国铁路国际（美国）公司与美国西部快线（Xpress West）公司在拉斯维加斯签署协议，双方将组建合资公司，建设并经营“西部快线高速铁路。高铁从拉斯维加斯到洛杉矶，全长370公里。现在中美合作双方已经开始做融资计划等工作，预计工程于2016年9月底开工。

15/9/15 The Boeing factory in Long Beach that assembled 279 of the workhorse C-17 is being disassembled. The plants closure is a painful loss for Long Beachs economy and the end of an era in which Southern Californias aerospace industry, and its high-paying factory jobs, helped build a strong middle class.

The C-17 is the last major military or civilian aircraft to be assembled in California. Just 20 miles north, upstart SpaceX is building rockets, engines and spacecraft in Hawthorne for a fast-growing list of government and commercial customers. Virgin Galactic recently announced that it would build its new satellite-launching rocket in Long Beach. The Pentagon continues to buy drones built in Southern California. And the state could win a big chunk of the work on a new stealth bomber the Pentagon has planned.

Chinese continue to be California’s biggest Asian group, with 1.25 million people.  Six of the top 10 cities that have at least 10,000 Asian Indian residents are in California : Cupertino, Fremont, Sunnyvale, and Santa Clara, all in Silicon Valley; and Livingston and Yuba City, rural communities with large concentrations of Sikh farmers. In each city, at least one in seven residents are Asian Indian.

15/10/5 洛杉矶的华人大多分布在圣盖博谷以及橙县一带，这是华人分布最集中的两个区域。圣盖博谷西区是最早开发的华人区域。这里着名的城市有：蒙特利公园市(Monterey Park)、阿凯迪亚(Arcadia)、圣马力诺(San Marino)、圣盖博(San Gabriel)、阿罕布拉市(Alhambra)等，这里华人的比例非常高，通常在60%以上。在这里你可以看到处处有写着中国字的招牌，你碰到的大部分人是黑头发的中国人，在这里你可以直接用中文生活。

从最早开发的圣盖博谷西区往东延伸，之後开发的圣盖博谷东区以罗兰岗（Rowland Heights）为商业中心。这边的城市有哈岗(Hacienda Heights)、钻石吧(Diamond Bar)、核桃市(Walnut)、奇诺岗市（City of Chino Hills）等。东区的华人平均比例为40%左右。在奇诺岗市，华人比例稍低，在20%左右。再远一点，到了橙县的约巴林达市(Yorba Linda)，也是一个着名的城市，华人的比例就降到10%以下了。在发展圣盖博谷东区的同时，我们的华人聚居区也逐渐延伸到橙县。这边着名的城市有尔湾市，约巴林达, 富勒顿市(Fullerton)， 布雷(Brea) ，着名的海滨城市有新港滩市(Newport Beach), 新港海滨和拉古纳海滩市( Laguna Beach)等等。

Carey, who was on her first solo backpacking trip, was found slain in Golden Gate Park Saturday morning, following the first day of the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. She had suffered trauma to her body and had been shot.

Pornography grosses more annual revenue than Hollywoods film industry. Before porn became mass-produced on San Fernando Valley factory lines and beamed directly into computer screens and hotel televisions for private consumption, it was a very public phenomenon, and nowhere more than in San Francisco.

In 1969, Baghdad-by-the-Bay became the first city in the United States to legalize films that explicitly depicted penetration. "San Francisco birthed this entire industry," says Michael Stabile, the director of a short documentary called "Smut Capital of America" that unearths the citys forgotten role in the history of modern pornographic filmmaking.

In the wake of the landmark decision in the People v. Alex de Renzy, "Pornography in Denmark" went into wide release, grossing $2 million on its minuscule $15,000 budget. Other filmmakers quickly mined the moneymaking combination of coitus and celluloid. By 1971, pornography was so widespread in the city that the New York Times magazine decreed San Francisco "the porn capital of America." "It became like a Gold Rush," says Stabile, who took his documentary to the Tribeca Film Festival. Analysts believe that much of the still-unnamed bomber will be manufactured in Northrop’s plant at an industrial park in Palmdale. 15/11/5 美國公民及移民服務局(USCIS)最新版新移民指南(Welcome Guide for New Immigrants)強調，離開美國過久或犯下重罪者的綠卡很可能被撤銷，而綠卡被廢者甚至會被立刻遞解出境。離開美國超過一年者將不能再使用其綠卡入境，而一些移民認為，只要至少每年回一次美國，便可在居住於其他國家的同時維持其永久居民身分，這一想法是錯誤的。「即使綠卡持有者離開美國的時間在六個月至一年之間，但若有證據顯示其無意將美國當成永久的家，那麼其綠卡也可能作廢。」不過指南也表示，若確有重要事項耽誤返美時間，綠卡持有者可準備好證明理由的文件，向移民局進行解釋。同時，如果綠卡持有者打算離開美國超過12 個月，應該在離境前提交I-131表格申請回美證(reentry permit，即再入境許可)，有效期為兩年。離開美國時間不超過兩年的綠卡持有者在返美入關時，應出示再入境許可而非簽證或綠卡。但是持有回美證僅是其短暫離境後返美的最有利證明，並不能保證其將被允許入境美國。因此，指南提醒綠卡持有者，切莫離美時間過長。

15/11/15 [Atlantic]  Very early in the 20th century, most films were produced on a small scale, using methods adapted from live theater. But by the 1910s and early ’20s, the mass-market potential of movies had become evident to the leading film­makers of the time—Cecil B. De­Mille, D. W. Griffith, Thomas Ince. Ince in particular envisioned a production process akin to that of the auto industry.

Ince, who set up a film studio on Sunset Boulevard, established an assembly-line approach that brought efficiency to film production. His “continuity script” rearranged scenes into the most economical sequence for shooting, minimizing downtime. Everything from camera angles to actors’ facial expressions was specified. When shooting was finished, editors would piece scenes together in a precursor to what we now call “post­production.” Using this process, Ince, sometimes called the “father of the Western,” began cranking out as many as two short Westerns a week. He and his fellow innovators set up shop in greater Los Angeles largely to take advantage of the year-round filming opportunities and the vast expanses of open (and inexpensive) land. But once begun,industrialization favored scale and drew in talent, lending Hollywood, like Detroit, a compounding advantage.

The speed with which large parts of the movie industry have recently decamped from Hollywood is striking. According to the Monitor Group, a consulting firm, in 1990 just 14 percent of film and television productions developed by American studios were shot outside the U.S. for economic reasons. By 1998, that figure had nearly doubled, to 27 percent, resulting in the loss of 20,000 full-time jobs in Los Angeles. A recent study by FilmL.A., the area’s film-production-licensing organization, found that of the 106 films released in 2014 by Southern California’s major and “mini major” studios, only 22 were primarily produced in California. New York, with its generous tax incentives, was the most favored out-of-town location, landing 13 feature films, followed by the United Kingdom and Canada with 12 apiece.

Postproduction used to have a natural home in Los Angeles for the simple reason that it involved the manipulation of film. As recently as 2007, most major motion pictures were shot with color film, and it made sense for the shooting, the film-­processing, and all the assorted film-doctoring that followed to occur in close proximity. But that’s no longer true.

15/12/3 目前聖蓋博谷許多城市主要商業區華資餐館已幾乎是「三步一店」，加上最近兩、三年不少大型中餐館及自助餐館加入，這種密集型競爭，使得商家比以往任何時候都絞盡腦汁。目前在聖蓋博谷華人聚居地區超大型的自助中餐館就有五、六家，每家占地都過1萬平方呎，滿座容納350至400人，相當於傳統餐館的四至五倍，各家餐館都希望出奇制勝，千方百計招攬客人。

南加州中餐消費長期以來保持了美國的傳統，即周一至周五外食人口以公司上班族為主，中午一個小時的休息時間，使得大多的飲食都以簡餐為主，加上美國本身快餐發達，各種口味餐館選擇很多，中餐要異軍突起困難不少。許多中餐館在周末門庭若市，這也正是美國傳統就餐習慣，但周末全家外食展現的熱鬧，還是無法彌補平常的冷清。中餐業仍在艱難努力當中。

15/12/8 圣地亚哥机场新航站楼，将使用天桥连接铁丝网另一端的墨西哥堤瓦讷旧机场。旅客只要付18美元通行费，就可以经由天桥，走到119米外的堤瓦讷国际机场。从那儿，可以搭机前往大约30个墨西哥城市。不过天桥主要是服务从墨西哥前往美国的旅客，每年大约有260万人次旅客经由堤瓦讷机场前往美国。过去，他们必须搭15分钟的车，前往陆地上的关口，然后排队几个小时进入圣地亚哥。而以后，走天桥只要5分钟就可以抵达入境检查口。

15/12/15 With Mondays ceremonial opening of the Western Hemispheres largest ocean desalination plant, a new era began for water use in San Diego County — and possibly for the entire parched state.  If the new facility in Carlsbad performs according to expectations, that could change. About 15 other desalination sites are being proposed in the state.

The plant is capable of producing 50 million gallons of fresh water daily, about 10% of the countys total water use. Poseidon Water of Boston owns and operates the structure, which it built for $1 billion. The San Diego County Water Authority, the regions main water manager, is buying the desalinated water under a 30-year purchase agreement.

迪士尼能在同業中獨佔鰲頭，正是因為決心把「說故事」放在業務核心，以及有能耐不斷利用新角色把粉絲一個個抓回來。迪士尼買下皮克斯（Pixar Animation Studios）和漫威娛樂（Marvel Entertainment），把《玩具總動員》的巴斯光年和《復仇者聯盟》的鋼鐵人納入麾下，成為米老鼠的同伴，盧卡斯影業則讓星戰群雄加入伊格 2005 年擔任迪士尼掌門以來招兵買馬的明星陣容。

15/12/29 南加州傍晚地牛翻身，芮氏規模4.4級地震，從聖伯納汀諾縣至蒙特利公園市，不少人「相當有感」。此地震發生在聖安德里斯（San Andreas）斷層與San Jacito支斷層交界處，震央位於聖伯納汀諾縣，距離Devore市約兩哩，利維多（Rialto）約六哩，芳塔那（Fontana）約七哩處，震深2.5哩，「屬相當淺層」。
 
San Jacinto斷層與聖安德里斯斷層兩者為平行，聖安德里斯沿著聖伯納汀諾山向東延伸，途經大熊湖等城市，而San Jacinto斷層則沿著聖伯納汀諾山南邊的San Jacinto山脈，往東南延伸，經過庫卡蒙加牧場、芳塔那等新興城市，一直到美墨邊境。

15/12/31 歐巴馬政府公布一項法規提案，為外國勞工解除約束，讓他們完成所有申請綠卡的程序前，不必受限協助他們取得簽證和工作許可的是同一雇主，只要在相同或相似領域工作，這些申請者就可以無限期地留在美國。

新法規可讓目前持H-1B簽證待在美國、已申請但還未拿到綠卡的約10萬人，得以無限期地留在美國。國內安全部說。此法規一旦實施，綠卡申請者不必再擔心取得綠卡前辭掉工作就得返國。H1-B持有人將因此無限制次數地申請三年簽證的延期，直到綠卡申請獲准或駁回為止。新法規提案規定，外國勞工離職後，有60天的緩衝期可另覓新職。

16/1/27 For almost a decade, transit ridership has declined across Southern California despite enormous and costly efforts by top transportation officials to entice people out of their cars and onto buses and trains.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the regions largest carrier, lost more than 10% of its boardings from 2006 to 2015, a decline that appears to be accelerating. Despite a $9-billion investment in new light rail and subway lines, Metro now has fewer boardings than it did three decades ago, when buses were the countys only transit option.

Most other agencies fare no better. In Orange County, bus ridership plummeted 30% in the last seven years, while some smaller bus operators across the region have experienced declines approaching 25%. In the last two years alone, a Metro study found that 16 transit providers in Los Angeles County saw average quarterly declines of 4% to 5%.

The office space to be developed sits on Orchard Parkway on both sides of Atmel Way and east of Orchard Parkway on both sides of Component Drive.

16/2/8 A Bay Area battle over a proposed Warriors move from Oakland to San Francisco

Project proponents insist it will bring diversity to a neighborhood dominated by biotech and other life sciences firms clustered around UC San Franciscos Mission Bay campus.

After purchasing the Warriors five years ago for $450 million, majority owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber made clear their desire to move the team back to "The City" — as native San Franciscans prefer — where it played in the 1960s as the San Francisco Warriors.

There is no bay at Mission Bay. The marshy inlet was filled in long ago — with abandoned Gold Rush-era ships, rubble from earthquakes and fires and anything else that might turn water into developable land.

In the late 1980s, cramped at its main campus above Golden Gate Park, UCSF began scouting for an additional site. Eventually, Senior Vice Chancellor Bruce Spaulding settled on 43 acres in Mission Bay.

Well-supported by philanthropists, the satellite campus has grown wildly, with its daily population of faculty, staff and students projected to nearly quadruple in the next 20 years. Outpatient visits are predicted to grow from 70,000 a year to 450,000.

16/2/9 Nearly 7,000 homeless people live in San Francisco. The problem has been especially visible since three transient people allegedly murdered a concertgoer in Golden Gate Park in October. Just on Tuesday morning, a police officer was stabbed in a confrontation near a homeless encampment.

[Kevin Moore] I moved here from Washington, D.C., which is itself a bastion of homelessness, so I was shocked to find a place with so many more homeless people.  The most salient(突出的) ones (in no particular order):

•Drug Culture.  Drug use is widely acceptable and often encouraged here.  This has surely sent many, many people with addictive personalities over the edge into homelessness.  Once homeless, drugs also provide a useful escape from the horrors of living on the street, reinforcing that persons homelessness by preventing them from pursuing more useful endeavors.
•Great Weather.  You see this in other warm West Coast cities like Vancouver.  You might get really cold, but youll probably never freeze to death in San Francisco.  Also, it doesnt get hot during the summer, so youre not frequently questing for shade and clean water.
•A Liberal Approach to Social Services.  As many others have noticed, there are a plethora of city and private services dedicated to helping poor people, including the homeless.
•Really Expensive Housing.  If something goes wrong for you (unexpected job loss, divorce, medical bills), you could wind up on your ass pretty quickly.  Regular folks dont have a lot of room for error.

16/2/13 比亚迪汽车公司将为大洛杉矶羚羊谷提供85辆纯电动巴士，助力羚羊谷(Antelope Valley) 建成全美首个全电力公交系统。这85台电动巴士将在比亚迪设在加州南部兰开斯特市 (Lancaster) 的工厂生产，车型包括车身长度为12米和18米的低地板巴士以及13米长的长途客车。这些电动巴士充电一次可行驶超过250公里。羚羊谷交通部门还将建设无线充电系统，满足客车长途运营的需要。

lily办公室位于旧金山一条毫不起眼的僻静小街。走进他们的办公室，才发现里面是一个巨大的仓库。30多位员工在仓库的前半部分工作，而后半部分则是用网罩围起来的试飞区域。上月刚满24岁的Antoine Balaresuqe来自法国，在伯克利我念的是企业管理专业，但期间也学习了计算机等课程。lily另一位共同创始人Henry Bradlow是他的伯克利同学，他是学习的计算机和机器人专业。

16/2/18 Facing high construction costs and political opposition in Southern California, the state has decided to build the first 250-mile section of the California bullet train from the Kern County line to San Jose instead of Fresno to Burbank.

16/2/18 Drivers whose cars get towed from public areas in San Francisco will save a cool $22.50 from the nearly $500 in fees a tow company that contracts with the city has been charging them. Tow fees that now stand at $491.25 will drop 5 percent. But AutoReturn can still ding drivers for not picking up their cars in four hours, at which point the company charges $58.50 for the first day of storage. The company can then jack the price up to $68.25 for each day after that. The new lower fees go into effect April 1.

16/2/19 The drive home through Dublin, Pleasanton and Livermore on I-580 should be quicker for some after two new Eastbound lanes officially opened at 5AM on Friday. A Westbound lane is due to open Monday. Having two people in your car, or a low-emissions decal, wont be enough to get you into the new carpool lane. Drivers who want to keep getting a free ride in the fast lane will need a special new FasTrak toll tag, known as "FasTrak Flex." The new tags still resemble an ink pad but have a switch to indicate the number of occupants in the vehicle. If the switch is set to 2 or 3, the driver won’t be charged. But a driver with the tag set at 1, or with an older FasTrak device, will pay the variable toll. Drivers with no transponder at all will be subject to fines.

Express lanes are carpool lanes that allow solo drivers to pay a toll to gain access to the lanes. Tolls on the new 12-mile express lanes on I-580 — two lanes eastbound, one lane westbound — will vary depending on distance traveled and level of congestion. Tolls rise and fall with congestion, going as high as $13 and as low as $2.10.

16/2/19 A tourist from the United Kingdom was fighting for his life after he was stabbed in the head during a street robbery in San Francisco. The 44-year-old man was walking with his niece, who was visiting from Southern California, east on Post Street near Franklin Street about 8:30 p.m. when they were attacked by a man and a woman. While the tourist attempted to hold onto his green messenger bag, the male suspect stabbed him in the head with a knife.

In December, three French tourists were robbed on a Twin Peaks hill while snapping photos of the vista. An 81-year-old man was shoved to the ground and lost consciousness.

In August, a tourist from Thailand was shot in the shoulder by muggers who attempted to steal his camera as he shot photos near the famed winding stretch of Lombard Street, in one of the city’s most scenic neighborhoods. In the summer of 2014, two Dutch tourists were robbed at gunpoint while taking pictures in the same area.

Leland Yee, a powerhouse in Bay Area politics for a quarter century and now a convicted felon for taking bribes from undercover agents.   Yee was sentenced to five years in prison and received a $20,000 fine in a federal bribery and corruption case in San Francisco, Calif.

安那罕曾是主張種族主義、白人至上的三Ｋ黨「重鎮」，在市民幾全是白人時代，有近三百名三Ｋ黨員進駐，身穿黨袍與戴面罩在街頭「巡邏」。有一次三Ｋ黨集會，吸引兩萬人湧入安那罕。上世紀初，安那罕市議會五名市議員曾有四人是三Ｋ黨員，他們在1924年被罷免。

16/2/29 加州迪士尼樂園迪士尼冒險樂園的門票，將採取尖離峰三級制。目前入園的單日票是每張99美元，新制的全票價格將調整為離峰日每張95美元、常態日每張105美元，以及尖峰日每張119美元等三種票價。耶誕節、暑假與春假期間的票價當然列為尖峰日。占地超過一萬七千坪的星際大戰主題園區正緊鑼密鼓規畫中，冰雪奇緣主題園區也預計今年下半年開幕。

此外，環球影城趕在哈利波特的魔法世界主題園區4月7日開幕前，也宣布實施尖離峰票價兩級制，也就是維持現行一日票每張價格95美元，離峰價格每張可省20美元。

16/3/2 No longer will a daily newspaper bear the name of Oakland or San Jose due to a mass consolidation by Bay Area News Group. Half a dozen Bay Area newspapers will be folded into two daily publications meant to serve the East Bay and South Bay. The last daily edition of the 150-year-old Oakland Tribune will be published April 4. On April 5, the East Bay will get its first look at the East Bay Times — a consolidation of the Contra Costa Times, the Oakland Tribune, the Daily Review in Hayward and the Argus, which serves Fremont. The company will also replace the contracostatimes.com and insidebayarea.com websites with a new East Bay focused site, eastbaytimes.com.

In the South Bay and on the Peninsula, the San Mateo County Times will join the San Jose Mercury News to become the Mercury News, also debuting on April 5.

Silicon Valley saw more than 7,500 U.S. residents move away in 2014, the first time since 2011 that the area has recorded a domestic net loss. But a steady influx of foreign-born workers made up for the deficit, ensuring that the tech worker pool kept growing over the period.

The lack of affordable housing on the Peninsula and in the South Bay is one big reason for the outflow of local talent. Home prices in the valley increased 13 percent between August 2014 and August 2015. Rents were up 12 percent.

The extension to Santa Monica marks the first passenger rail service between downtown Los Angeles and the Westside since the demise of the Pacific Electric streetcar network in the 1950s. The light-rail line, primarily built on an abandoned Southern Pacific right-of-way, curves through Palms, Sawtelle and West Los Angeles, a route roughly parallel to the 10 Freeway. Its terminus, at Fourth Street and Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica, is a block from the Third Street Promenade and a half-mile from the ocean.

16/9/1 美國太空運輸公司SpaceX的獵鷹九號火箭在例行測試時發射台發生異常，因而爆炸，上頭載運的臉書衛星也被炸毀。這個事件不僅對SpaceX執行長穆斯克的火箭發射進程造成影響、傷及臉書執行長查克柏格利用衛星為非洲提供網路服務的計畫，也在整個太空產業掀起漣漪。穆斯克在推特說，爆炸當下火箭正在裝載燃料，確切起因仍在調查中。當時搭載的通訊衛星Amos-6也一同被炸毀。Amos-6由以色列衛星通訊公司Spacecom營運，原定於3日升空，為臉書執行在太空中傳送網路的Internet.org計畫。

16/9/10 福特将支持加州“湾区自行车分享”项目的发展，将该地区的公共自行车总数从700辆增加至7000辆。新的公共自行车将于2017年春季就位。由于福特的参与，到2018年底旧金山地区将建立起美国第二大自行车分享网络，仅次于纽约地区。

这一系统将由自行车分享创业公司Motivate来运营，而名称将改为福特GoBike。用户将可以通过福特的一款应用去使用这些公共自行车。目前，无限制使用公共自行车的价格为每月14.95美元。

周本立指出，AB2864法案強調了美國華人兩段重要的歷史認知。第一段歷史涉及華人建設橫貫大陸、聯結東西的鐵路。第二段歷史是華人遭受國會1882年排華法案的迫害，包括阻止華人擁有土地、異族通婚以及家庭團聚。

據估計，在大陸鐵路建設期間，1萬1000名華人男子付出了艱辛的勞動，當他們將鐵軌鋪設到海拔1萬4000呎的內華達山脈時，有超過1000人在事故和雪崩中喪生。

16/9/29 洛杉磯市長Eric Garcetti與機場局宣布正式啟用的航廈通聯道，以往在洛杉磯國際機場國內外線轉機，需要拖著依規定取出的托運行李、離開航廈後步行或搭接駁車到另一個航廈、再經過安檢一次。耗資1億4800萬元的新建通聯道，打通機場的「任督二脈」，連結國際航廈與美國航空所在的第四航廈，第四到第八航廈也已互相通聯，轉機旅客可不離開航廈直接到下一站，步行距離也縮短，大幅增加國際旅行便利。搭國內航班抵達第四到第八等南邊航廈的旅客，可直接經過室內的通聯道，一路步行到國際航廈，不必領行李或再次經過安檢。

國際航班旅客仍舊需要依法取出行李再經過安檢，但不必再走出行廈。為加速旅客移動，機場局也在國際航廈抵達層南邊新建專為轉機旅客使用的安檢區，不必與其他旅客一起排隊安檢。經過安檢後，推著行李搭乘手扶梯或電梯上到五樓的通聯道，前往南邊的國內線航廈。

Among the changing red and yellow fall leaves of Yosemite National Park, nature artist Penny Otwell is marveling at the fullest rushing waterfalls and rivers shes ever painted there in autumn. But down in the dry Southern California suburbs, David Cantuna laments the same dead and dying grass in his backyard.

"Ive been here 53 years and Ive never seen it like this," said Otwell, busy in recent weeks capturing on canvas Yosemites flooded meadows, brimming rivers and gushing waterfalls that more typically are dry this time of year. The Merced River "is just bank to bank, which is unusual, and the waterfalls are just — after the rains, they were fabulous," Otwell said Friday as she headed to her studio.

But the five-year drought only is deepening in parts of Central and Southern California, including the 21 percent of the state that remains stuck in the deepest category of drought.

17/1/8 Downtown Los Angeles is undergoing its largest construction boom in modern times — an explosion juiced by foreign investment that’s adding thousands of residences, construction jobs and a multitude of shops and restaurants.

Since 2010, according to real estate data firm CoStar, 42 developments of at least 50,000 square feet have been built — a figure that includes large adaptive reuse projects such as converting an aging warehouse into new offices. An additional 37 large projects are under construction.

On the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Figueroa Street in downtown Los Angeles, workers are putting the finishing touches on the Wilshire Grand, the West Coast’s tallest building. Owned by Korean Air, it rises 1,100 feet and will have a hotel, offices and observation deck when finished.

Two blocks away, China’s Greenland Group is busy erecting the four-tower Metropolis community, a $1-billion development with 350 hotel rooms and more than 1,500 condos.

17/3/25 BART riders are able to climb aboard a train and travel on an extension that will take them farther south than the rail system has ever gone. The 5.4-mile Warm Springs/South Fremont extension is one more step toward taking BART to the heart of Silicon Valley, a goal that might be achieved this year.

Fremont’s downtown station has been the end of the line for BART since it started service in 1972. But the new station won’t have that designation for long. A 10-mile extension to Milpitas and the Berryessa neighborhood in east San Jose is under construction by the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, and could open as early as the end of this year.

17/5/30 State Finance Director sent a letter last week to the California High-Speed Rail Authority, approving a plan to draw the $713 million from a bond fund that voters approved in 2008 for the state’s bullet train project.

The electrification project is supposed to increase passenger capacity, reduce travel time and cut diesel emissions on the 50-mile route from San Jose to San Francisco. Eventually, the bullet train would use the same electrical system and the same tracks, creating a rationale for the high-speed rail authority paying a large chuck of the cost.

The project also relies on a $647-million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The electrification project will cost nearly $2 billion and replace at least some of Caltrain’s diesel locomotives with electric trains that can accelerate faster, thereby reducing travel times.

18/7/12 矽谷現正計畫在聖荷西市中心打造一個交通中心，以現有的德里登車站(Deridon)為核心，將是捷運、加州火車、輕鐵、ACE火車、都會火車和美鐵等公交系統的車站。在德里登車站旁邊，Google已興建一個「Google村」，新建辦公樓、住房、商店和餐廳將會形成一個社區，可容納1.5萬至2萬名Google員工。現在發展商又在Google村旁邊，計畫另一大型發展計畫，稱為南卑斯康車站(South Bascom Station)，發展的面積達6.4英畝，將會興建590個住房單和21萬4000平方呎的辦公室面積。

18/7/18 太平洋海岸景观公路（Pacific Coast Highway）——加州1号公路恢复通车。大瑟尔(Big Sur)是美国加州卡梅尔到圣西蒙之间的盘山海岸公路，蜿蜒的海岸公路和沿途优美的自然风光一直深受游客们的喜爱。2017年5月20日，大瑟尔南入口附近Mud Creek地区遭遇大规模山体滑坡，约500米的公路被超过100万吨砂石和泥巴掩埋。

18/11/16 加州發生近代史上死傷最慘重的野火，今天死亡人數已升至59人，仍有130人下落不明。大部分失蹤者為北加州標特郡（Butte County）天堂鎮（Paradise）居民。上週爆發的「坎普野火」（Camp Fire），讓天堂鎮幾乎從地圖上消失。

天堂鎮人口約2萬6000人，位於內華達山（SierraNevada）山麓，當地受到許多退休人士喜愛，警長辦公室通報的失蹤者有許多是70歲、80歲至90歲的年長者。天堂鎮位在加州首府沙加緬度（Sacramento）北方約130公里處。強風助長火勢迅速蔓延，天堂鎮幾乎每戶民宅都遭到摧毀。

19/6/6 The new homeless count released Tuesday by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority showed nearly 59,000 people living in the streets across Los Angeles County, a 12% increase over the prior year; and 36,300 homeless people within the city limits of LA, a 16% increase over last years count.

For several years now, the citys residents have watched tent encampments spring up far beyond the downtown area known as Skid Row to their neighborhood sidewalks, freeway embankments, city and county parks, along business corridors and into some of the most affluent neighborhoods of Los Angeles.

19/10/5 Caltrains Board of Directors approved its 2040 Service Vision plan Thursday, and one of the biggest planned changes is an increase to the number of trains running in each direction during peak hours. The plan seeks to run a minimum of eight trains an hour between San Jose and San Francisco, up from its current service of five trains an hour during peak commuting times.

Among the other big changes outlined in the plan is the expansion of express train sets to run every 15 minutes, while also increasing service during off-peak hours and weekends.

Caltrains ridership has more than doubled in the last 15 years, with its trains transporting nearly 65,000 daily riders.

The Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta and San Francisco Bay comprise the largest estuary(河口) on the West Coast. The Delta is often considered the nexus of Californias statewide water system. About half the total river flow in the state passes through this region, from which water is exported to the San Joaquin Valley, Southern California and portions of the Bay area to supply some 1,130,000 acres (460,000 ha) of farmland and 23 million people in central and Southern California. The Sacramento River flows into the delta from the north and the San Joaquin River from the south through Stockton.

從這張太空人照的加州照片可看出，加州的軌道交通的開發方式，1.將BART從兩個方向延伸到Sacramento、Mondesto。 2. 加緊建設從Sacramento 到 Merced 的高鐵。 3. 建設Merced穿越海岸山脈到矽谷的聯絡線。 4. BART延伸到矽谷。 5. 建設 Merced 到 Bakerfield 的高鐵。 6. 再看LA積不積極要建設到 Bakerfield的高鐵。至少中北加洲的區域整合已建立堅強的基礎。

這個規畫最值得注意的是：如何進入洛杉磯市區及舊金山市區。而進入洛杉磯市區的走向比較特別，到Bakersfield之後，往右拐繞了一大圈到Lancaster、Palmdale，然後再左拐走山谷進入洛杉磯盆地。如此規畫是有利於未來通往Las Vegas。

The San Andreas runs deep near and under some of California’s most populated areas. The cities of Desert Hot Springs, San Bernardino, Wrightwood, Palmdale, Gorman, Frazier Park, Daly City, Point Reyes Station and Bodega Bay rest on the San Andreas fault line.

很明顯，Bay area 及 洛杉磯都已發展飽和，再加上這條恐怖的斷層，加州的未來發展必須往內陸移動，也就是往中央谷地來發展，第一步就是建立研究型大學(UC Merced)，並在附近設立科研單位、科創園區。第二步就是建立縱貫的高鐵而且連通舊金山、洛杉磯、沙加緬度、聖荷西，第三步就是增設國際機場(Castle airport，改名San Joaquin airport 或 Yosemite 機場 )。第四步就是在國際機場附近建立航空城，建設Merced 到 Gilroy 高速公路，吸引矽谷企業內遷。將高鐵路線作一修改，到Merced town 後作分支往Bay area，並且經過Castle 機場，如此，高鐵就有去機場的基本乘客。

The largest sex toy maker in the nation sits on an 8-acre property in North Hollywood. Doc Johnson, which produces very detailed anatomical toys, employs 500 people, has a lab and scientist on site and is certified by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Most of the employees live in the Valley.

“It remains San Fernando Valley based,” Helmy said of adult entertainment. “The most notable works typically come out of the Valley. It’s still the hub, no matter what people say. It’s still porn Valley.”

The San Gabriel Valley is one of the principal valleys of Southern California, lying generally to the east of the city of Los Angeles. Surrounding features include: San Gabriel Mountains on the north, San Rafael Hills to the west, with Los Angeles Basin beyond; San Fernando Valley and Crescenta Valley farther to the northwest, Puente Hills to the south, with the coastal plain of Orange County beyond, Chino Hills and San Jose Hills to the east, with the Pomona Valley and Inland Empire beyond.

The valley derives its name from the San Gabriel River that flows southward through the center of the valley, which itself was named for the Spanish Mission San Gabriel Arcángel originally built in the Whittier Narrows in 1771.

Metro Rail is an urban rail system serving Los Angeles County. It consists of six lines, including two rapid transit subway lines (the Red and Purple lines) and four light rail lines (the Blue, Green, Gold and Expo lines) serving 80 stations. It connects with the Metro Liner bus rapid transit system (the Orange Line and Silver Line) and also with the Metrolink commuter rail system. 

Metro Liner (also known as Metro Busway and Metro Transitway),  refers to bus rapid transit services operated by Los Angeles County Metro that operate on bus lanes. There are currently two lines which belong to the bus rapid transit (BRT) network. Metro Liner is designed to mimic the Metro Rail light rail services, in both the vehicles design and their operation.

Metrolink is a commuter rail system serving Southern California; it consists of seven lines and 55 stations operating on 624.7 km of rail network. The system operates in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ventura counties, as well as Oceanside in San Diego County. It connects with the Los Angeles County Metro Rail system, the San Diego Coaster commuter rail and Sprinter light rail services, and with Amtraks Pacific Surfliner, Coast Starlight, Southwest Chief, and Sunset Limited intercity rail services.

The Mojave Desert

The Mojave Desert (pronounced: /mɵˈhɑːviː/ mo-hah-vee)  occupies a significant portion of southeastern California and smaller parts of central California, southern Nevada, southwestern Utah and northwestern Arizona in the United States. It is the driest of the North American deserts.

While most of the Mojave Desert is sparsely populated, several large cities can be found there including Lancaster, Palmdale and Victorville in California, Henderson and Las Vegas (the largest) in Nevada, as well as St. George in Utah. There are some research facilities at Mojave Airport (also known as Mojave Air and Space Port), located within Mojave Desert.

The boneyard is just one part of the Mojave Air and Space Port. The boneyard is simply rental space provided for airlines that no longer have an immediate need for their planes. It’s a giant storage bay, though one not all planes return from- some sit there for years in the baking heat, slowly roasting like foil-wrapped potatoes.

Edwards Air Force Base located approximately 35 km northeast of Lancaster and 24 km east of Rosamond.It is the home of the Air Force Test Center and is the Air Force Materiel Command center of excellence for conducting and supporting research and development of flight, as well as testing and evaluation of aerospace systems from concept to combat. San Diego /ˌsæn diːˈeɪɡoʊ/ is approximately 190 km south of Los Angeles and immediately adjacent to the border with Mexico. With an estimated population of 1,381,069 as of July 1, 2014, San Diego is the eighth-largest city in the United States and second-largest in California. San Diego is known for its mild year-round climate, natural deep-water harbor, extensive beaches, long association with the U.S. Navy.

The city is the seat of San Diego County and is the economic center of the region as well as the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. San Diegos main economic engines are military and defense-related activities, tourism, international trade, and manufacturing. INYO MODOC MONO NAPA SHASTA SONOMA TUOLUMNE YOLO YUBA 是源於印地安人，其他大多是源於西班牙語。少數是英語。很明顯，西班牙殖民者來到加州這個地方，主要殖民地是港口與中央谷地，所以這些地方的名子都是西班牙文，而印地安原住民被趕到不利經濟生產的地方，所以，這些地方就保留了印地安名字，而英文的地方大多是美國時代美國人新開發的區域，新興城鎮。由於美國人並沒有改變這些西班牙(墨西哥)時帶保留的地名，可見西班牙文化對此地的影響已久(300年)，美國人在此建州之後已無法更改。 Humbolts郡名不是英文、不是西班牙文、也不是印地安語，那是什麼語? 原來是紀念一為普魯士(德國)的自然學家、地理學家。

范登堡空軍基地(Vandenberg Air Force Base)航天發射場

范登堡空军基地是美国加利福尼亚州圣巴巴拉县的一个空军基地和航天发射中心，以前美国空军参谋长霍伊特‧范登堡的名字命名。主要任务是发射军事和商业卫星，以及测试洲际弹道导弹。美国空军的航天联合机能构成司令部（Joint Functional Component Command for Space, JFCC SPACE）即以此基地为总部。

Stanford University (officially Leland Stanford Junior University) is a private research university in Stanford, California.

Stanford University is located on an 8,180-acre campus on the San Francisco Peninsula, in the northwest part of the Santa Clara Valley (Silicon Valley) approximately 60 km southeast of San Francisco and approximately 32 km northwest of San Jose. In 2008, 60% of this land remained undeveloped.
Stanford was founded in 1885 by Leland Stanford, former Governor of and U.S. Senator from California and leading railroad tycoon in memory of their only child, Leland Stanford, Jr., who had died of typhoid fever at age 15 the previous year.

During the 1940s and 1950s, Frederick Terman, as dean of engineering and later as provost, encouraged faculty and graduates to start their own companies. He is credited with nurturing Hewlett-Packard, Varian Associates, and other high-tech firms, until what would become Silicon Valley grew up around the Stanford campus. Terman is often called "the father of Silicon Valley."  Terman encouraged William B. Shockley, co-inventor of the transistor, to return to his hometown of Palo Alto. In 1956 he established the Shockley Transistor Laboratory.

In 1956, William Shockley opened Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory as a division of Beckman Instruments in Mountain View, California. At first he attempted to hire some of his former colleagues from Bell Labs, but none were willing to move to the West Coast or work with Shockley again at that time. Shockley then founded the core of the new company with what he considered the best and brightest graduates coming out of American engineering schools. A core group of Shockley employees, later known as the traitorous eight, became unhappy with his management of the company. The eight men were Julius Blank, Victor Grinich, Jean Hoerni, Eugene Kleiner, Jay Last, Gordon Moore, Robert Noyce, and Sheldon Roberts. Looking for funding on their own project, they turned to Sherman Fairchilds Fairchild Camera and Instrument. In 1957 the Fairchild Semiconductor division was started with plans to make silicon transistors at a time when germanium(鍺，Ge，原子序數是32，垂直是 碳、矽、鍺、錫、鉛，左右是 砷、鎵) was still the most common material for semiconductor use.

Moore and Noyce left Fairchild Semiconductor to found Intel in 1968. )

Peder Sather (1810 - 1886) was a prominent Norwegian-born American banker who is best known for his legacy to the University of California, Berkeley. His widow, Jane K. Sather, donated money in his memory for two of the schools most famous landmarks. Sather Gate and Sather Tower are both California Historical Landmarks which are registered National Register of Historic Places.

Berkeley is a city on the east shore of San Francisco Bay in northern Alameda County. It is named after the Irish eighteenth-century bishop and philosopher George Berkeley.

The Telegraph Avenue entrance to UC Berkeley, Sather Gate has served as a hub for Cal spirit gatherings and political rallies through the Great Depression, World War II, the McCarthy era and the Free Speech Movement.
Today, Sather Gate remains a gathering spot for diverse activities, from performances by the Cal Band during the week of Big Game and by student a capella groups to student organizations promoting every cause under the sun.

Most of Berkeley lies on a rolling sedimentary plain that rises gently from sea level to the base of the Berkeley Hills. East of the Hayward Fault along the base of the hills, elevation increases more rapidly. The highest peak along the ridge line above Berkeley is Grizzly Peak, elevation 535 m.

Pasadena is one of the primary cultural centers of the San Gabriel Valley.  Pasadena is home to many scientific and cultural institutions, including the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Robert A. Millikan (March 22, 1868 – December 19, 1953) was an American experimental physicist honored with the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1923 for his measurement of the elementary electronic charge and for his work on the photoelectric effect.

Arnold Orville Beckman (April 10, 1900 – May 18, 2004) was an American chemist, inventor, investor, and philanthropist. While a professor at California Institute of Technology, he founded Beckman Instruments based on his 1934 invention of the pH meter, a device for measuring acidity, later considered to have "revolutionized the study of chemistry and biology".

Signal Hill changed forever when oil was discovered. The hill would soon become part of the Long Beach Oil Field, one of the most productive oil fields in the world. On June 23, 1921, Shell Oil Companys Alamitos #1 well erupted. The gas pressure was so great the gusher rose 114 ft. in the air.

California Gold Rush（1848年－1855年）

(.：太漂亮了，這張照片對瞭解加州大有幫助。看到Las Vegas沒? 通往中西部大平原通道途經的一座城市。看了這張照片，可說加州簡直是美國的化外之地，想當初，美國人從東部來到這裡真是翻山越嶺，歷經千辛萬苦。想不到 Calexico–Mexicali都會區會這麼亮。再往東一點的大亮區應該是亞利桑納州的鳳凰城。在Sacramento 往東的山上一亮點應該是Reno，因為他旁邊有個湖 Lake Tahoe。往西北邊看有三個小亮區，從南到北，應該是波特蘭、西雅圖、溫哥華，其右是Cascade山脈，往右是哥倫比亞大盆地。之右下山中有一形像笑嘴的亮區是愛達荷州，真的很特別，笑嘴下方的亮點是鹽湖城，城傍大鹽湖，在其右的大亮點是丹佛，兩城之間的小亮點應是Grand Junction，在其下的亮點是新墨西哥州的最大城阿布奎基，在其東北不遠的小亮點是首府聖塔菲，而其下是在美墨邊界的 El Paso，其右三亮點已進入德州，分別是Amarillo、Lubbock、Midland。看了這立體圖，就知道當時為何美國人對加利福尼亞半島沒有興趣，可以參考一下佛羅里達半島的緯度。)

Two active volcanoes in California are Mount Shasta and Lassen Peak. Mount Shasta is located in the Cascade Range near the city of Redding. Lassen Peak is the southernmost active volcano in the Cascades.

The last time Mount Shasta erupted was about 200 or 300 years ago. Mount Shasta is considered a stratovolcano that formed on the remains of another volcano that had collapsed a few hundred thousand years ago, triggering landslides that devastated Shasta Valley.

Lassen Peaks last significant activity occurred with a series of eruptions between 1914 and 1917. The last major eruption, however, happened about 1,100 years ago, resulting in the formation of Chaos Crags. Lassen Peak has major eruptions once about every 10,000 years.
