We’ve all heard “spring forward, fall back” to remind us how to set our clocks. This fall, the term also applies to fashion.

Fall back to the ’70s: Think fringe, pants with wide legs, ponchos and long vests. Bohemian looks are in nearly every store.

Fall back another decade and check out the sleek silhouettes from the ’50s and ’60s.

With those eras as inspiration, it’s not surprising you’ll find some ubiquitous favorites. Topping the list is denim. It comes in every style jean you can think of and jackets that go way beyond the traditional jeans jacket. Shades vary from light to inky black. The flare leg is back, but don’t throw out your skinny jeans. You’ll want them to wear with a myriad of boot styles.

Ponchos are back in a big way, and not just for casual wear. This luxurious cashmere print poncho by Pashma is hand screened, $485. Pants by Natori, $350. Earrings by Roni Blanshay, $455. At GM Clotheshorse. Model courtesy of Models and Images.

For those who lived through the fashions of those times and aren’t anxious for a repeat, there’s a whole lot more to choose from this fall. Here’s a quick look at the major trends:

Colors: Every shade of gray, berry tones from raspberry to blackberry. Shades of blue, navy to slate. Mustard and muted golds to mix with all of the above.

Versatile pieces: A knit or sweater-weight duster, a long vest, an assortment of scarves, a lightweight coat or jacket to take you through the transitional season.

Western and southwestern motifs: “The Southwestern look is selling very well for transition,” says Barbara Bender sales associate in the Ralph Lauren department at Dillard’s Towne East.

Fringe shows up on hats, boots and everything in between. Bold floral prints that were so popular for spring and summer bloom again, this time in fall tones.

Jewelry: If you’ve been waiting for bold jewelry to return, you’ve got it. Bracelets are stacked, necklaces have oversized pendants and rings make a statement. Tassels are used on long necklaces.

Another popular look is vintage. Marrissa Marklewitz, owner of Wild at Heart, said, “Vintage and handmade looks are trending. It’s a return to appreciating our grandmother’s choices. A lot of suppliers are trying to imitate the real thing.”

Layer on luxury: Cashmere sweaters range from very thick to cushy. Large wraps, ponchos and scarves make staying warm a sensual treat. If cashmere is out of your price range, there are some wonderfully soft alternatives.

You’ll find these trends in a wide range of prices. If you see something you like but it’s out of your budget, continue to look. Manufacturers don’t want to miss out on what’s “in.”
