棒球項目確定將重返2020東京奧運，美國職棒大聯盟(MLB)正準備就是否讓球員參與的問題進行討論。不過大聯盟主席曼佛瑞(Rob Manfred)12日表示，從日期安排來看，東京奧運的日子似乎不太理想。

棒球在1992年巴塞隆納奧運被列為正式比賽項目，但在2012年倫敦奧運又被除名，必須等到2020年才能重返奧運。

美國職棒大聯盟當局目前不太願意配合奧運停止球季的比賽。

曼佛瑞12日告訴美國棒球記者協會(Baseball Writers' Association of America)，大聯盟將與國際棒壘球協會召開會議，全面了解東京奧運的時程和球隊數，然後再做出最後決定。曼佛瑞強調：「我們支持棒球重返奧運。」

國際奧林匹克委員會(IOC)希望頂尖的球員都能參與奧運。目前日本職棒中央聯盟和太平洋聯盟都傾向中止球季的比賽，讓球員得以參加東京奧運。

在棒球列入奧運比賽項目期間，古巴獲得1992、1996以及2004年的金牌；美國拿下2000年的冠軍，2008年則是南韓獲得。

奧運舉行期間，美國職棒大聯盟也正在進行例行賽，由於大聯盟球隊拒絕讓球員參加奧運，使得最佳球員無法參與，這也是導致棒球遭奧運除名的原因之一。
