China is cracking down on false stories and rumours being spread online. Recently, police from Hunan Province investigated a rumour widely reported by foreign media involving a Chinese lawyer, Xie Yang, who has frequently appeared in reports by the New York Times and The Guardian in connection with a controversial human rights case.
