Over 80% of the US's E-Waste is being exported to developing countries, causing major health issues for those in the countries who are breaking down the E-Waste in unsafe ways. Often the countries accepting the E-Waste have no safeguards or laws in place to protect the people who are handling this toxic waste, and they are burning plastics emitting dioxins, exposing themselves to lead, cadmium, and other toxic elements without protecting themselves.

In Guiyu China, they have been importing potable water for over five years after their own water sources were polluted. They've only been importing and breaking down E-Waste for six years, so it's rather obvious what the culprit is on the local environment. I've read that over 80% of the children in Guiyu have respiratory ailments or are subject to lead poisoning as a result of this practice. I started this petition after doing a project on E-Waste with a team at Presidio Graduate School, recognizing the unsustainability of this practice. Recognizing that our country is the only country besides Haiti which has not ratified the Basel convention made me ask the obvious question.. WHY?

It's obvious we should be mining recyclable EWaste for precious metals and other products which is actually a more efficient way to mine for aluminum, copper, gold and other precious metals than mining raw materials from the earth. The way this can make a difference in the world is it could stop exporting toxic pollution to a population who doesn't recognize the health risks. It could produce jobs locally as we finance better E-Waste recycling infrastructure and turn a waste into a resource for mining reusable materials.
