Pinot Noir: the name(s)

Pinot is not the first name for this variety. Moreillon (later Morillon) is an earlier synonym documented in 1283; that name may derive from words for blackberry, or the La Morée river in the Ile-de-France region. The Noirien name (from the word for black) was used around the same time, and is found in the late 14th century in the Côte dOr, confirming it as Pinot Noir. Auvernas is another early name used in the Loiret department, suggesting the grape came there from the Auvergne.

There are two theories regarding the Pinot name. The most likely is that it came about because their bunches are tightly packed and similar in shape to a pine cone (pinot in French). It may derive, however, from a place name in France such as Pinos or Pignols. Pignols in the Auvergne has cultivated Pinot since the middle ages.

The first mention of "Pinot" in its modern spelling dates to 1375. It is found in documents regarding a shipment of wine sent to Bruges by Duc Philippe le Hardi in advance of his visit there.

Pinot Noir is likely to have been widely distributed around Europe by the time any of the above names began to be regularly documented in the Middle Ages. This helps explain why numerous regions in France and beyond claim to be the birthplace of the variety; it has been grown in many locations for a very long time.
