The Type 096 is a projected class of ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) for Chinas Peoples Liberation Army Navy Submarine Force. The submarine is expected to begin construction in the early 2023s and be armed with the JL-3 SLBM.

China SLBM test launch! JL-3 missile from type 094 nuclear submarine captured by airline .

On 26 May 2022, China appears to complete test firing of a submarine-launched ballistic missile. The launch was captured by pilots and passengers of an airliner flew nearby. 

In the video, it is clear that a missile was launched from sea and roes into high altitude. The video does not show if there is a submarine or a surface platform, and it can not be verified if a rocket or a missile was launched. But based on announcement made by Chinese authority, there is no civilian rocket launch mission from sea on the day, and there are a few military exercises publicized in this time period. The missile appears to rise quickly and disappeared soon after launch, leaving a white trial. The size and flight path matches a ballistic missile, and it would not be a small size tactical missile launched by ship. Chinese authority has announced that in May a few Navy exercises will be carried out and listed the area forbidding vessels to enter. But the airliner flew past by the area can still have a good view of the potential ballistic missile launch.

It is reported that the Chinese Type 094 and the future Type 096 nuclear submarines are carrying the JL-2 and JL-3 missiles, presenting a fearsome strategy nuclear force in the world. The U.S., Japan, Australia, India, and South Korea have expressed concern about the North Korea’s missile tests in recent days. It would not be a surprise that they will all be cautious about the Chinese missile test. The U.S. also has been pushing for China to join the negotiation reducing nuclear weapons.

In recent years, China is reported to have tested the latest JL-3 submarine-launched ballistic missile a few times. Some test flights were caught on camera. One JL-3 test flight presented a large glowing contrail in the sky, becoming the most notable JL-3 launch test. The JL-3 missile is believed to be deployed to Type 094 submarine.

The Type 094 was officially unveiled a few years ago in the South China Sea. This is the latest Chinese strategic nuclear submarine carrying out intercontinental nuclear strike missions, a key platform of the Chinese retaliatory strike or second-strike capability deterring the U.S. to perform pre-emptive nuclear strike. The Type 094, the coming H-20 stealth strategy bomber, and the DF-31 and DF-41 intercontinental ballistic missiles are the most important players in Chinese nuclear arsenal.

The Type 094 SSBN carries Chinas nuclear missiles to hide underwater, four have currently been built. The future four Type 094 could be modified to be stealthier and carry longer ranged missiles that could hit the continental U.S.

 China has four Type 094 Jin class nuclear ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs). Displacing about 9,000 tons submerged, each Type 094 SSBN carries 12 8,000km ranged JL-2 submarine launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs). The JL-2 SLBM does not have the range to hit the continental U.S. inside protected Chinese territorial waters, but the future four Type 094 SSBNs are expected to carry the 12,000km-15,000km range JL03 SLBM, which can reach anywhere in the world from Chinese waters.
