Subject: Ma calls for "little things" to curb emissions
President Ma Ying-jeou has kicked off a national campaign aimed at raising
awareness of the need to curb carbon emissions.
According to Ma ........ the public needs to contribute by starting with
what he called the "little things" .... such as switching off electrical
equipment and appliances, conserving water and raising the thermostat on the
air conditioner by a few degrees.
Ma said he believes if everyone does these "little things" ... the combined
results could curb carbon emissions to the 2008 levels by the year 2020.
Speaking to reporters .. Ma said the island's carbon emissions were down by
5-per cent in 2009 ... but admitted that they are expected to rise again
after the economic recovery.
Taiwan accounts for 1-per cent of global carbon emissions, with carbon
emissions per capita 2.8 times the global average.
