1991年對這個45歲的英國歌手 Eric Clapton 來說，可能是最殘酷的一年。在1990年8月 Clapton 的經紀人因為空難過世了，7個月後的1991年，Clapton 4歲的兒子從紐約53層樓高的公寓窗戶外摔落到下面一個四層樓建築的屋頂。Clapton 因兒子意外的死亡，把自己與外界隔離了足足9個月，直到有一部電影 Rush 找他和 Will Jennings 幫忙寫音樂，他才開始工作。雖然是幫電影 Rush 寫的音樂，但事實上是在思念他的兒子，尤其是這首 Tears in Heaven 。音樂評論指出，他的曲風從這時開始變得較為柔和，但是更具力量與反思性。
在 Clapton 兒子出生之前，他的使用毒品是眾所週知的，但兒子的誕生改變了他的想法，他希望成為一個好父親，所以戒毒了。兒子的死亡悲劇很可能把他又拉回到毒品的世界，但是他沒有，Clapton 把他的悲傷轉向音樂，藉由音樂來療癒自己的傷痛。Tears in Heaven 是他為他兒子寫的，他在寫完第一大段後，希望 Jennings 能幫他完成，於是他們合作寫下這首感人動聽的曲子。

2004年時，Clapton 停止在他的演唱會上演奏這首歌了。他説他已經不再感受到他的失去了，每次唱這首歌時，他都需要把他的情感聯繫起來，但他不想再讓這些情緒回來，現在的他生活已經不同了，他想讓這些休息一下，也許以後會有不同的觀點。
