Chinese researchers have conducted a series research on recombinant horse proteins and released the latest report that mcr-1 variants found in healthy people are resistant to polymyxin, while polymyxin is considered as the "last line of defense" in antibiotics. This finding means that healthy people can't be aware of the situation in the transmission of super-resistant genes, suggesting that healthy people in the drug-resistant gene carrying situation are worthy of attention.

The study was published in the latest issue of the US Journal of Antimicrobials and Chemotherapy. Correspondent author, researcher Keng Biao from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention of Infectious Diseases told Xinhua that drug-resistant strains not only exist in patients, healthy people may also carry drug-resistant genes, which is a neglected public health problem to drug-resistant bacteria. The report found a variation of the mcr-1 gene from Salmonella carried by several healthy individuals, which was different from the previous drug resistance genes.

First, this variant is found in healthy people carrying Salmonella. Previously reported bacteria carrying mcr-1 are mainly bacteria like E. coli, Klebsiella which are likely to cause nosocomial infection, and only a small number of patients with Salmonella carry mcr-1 resistance gene in vivo. Salmonella is a common food borne pathogen, and healthy people carrying mcr-1 resistance gene containing Salmonella means that they have the possibility of causing the infection caused by others. Because healthy people do not go to the hospital for medical treatment and use of antibiotics, so they will not be aware of the case of transmission of drug resistance genes.

Second, the reported mcr-1 gene variant has two loci mutations that result in changes in amino acids, which indicates that it also has resistance to polymyxin. This result means that although this gene variant has not yet been caused by an increase in drug resistance, it has been shown that the mcr-1 gene is also mutated, suggesting that the mcr-1 gene mutation in different strains and whether the mutation will cause increased resistance should continue to be concerned.

In 2015, China first reported the presence of bacteria with mcr-1 genes in livestock and humans. This gene is carried by the plasmid in the cell and can be propagated through the plasmid between the different bacteria. In other words, the gene-resistant bacteria can be transmitted to other bacteria, which may lead to the emergence of bacteria against a variety of antibiotics, and therefore causing great concern. Since then, the EU and North America have also found bacteria with mcr-1 gene.

With the increasingly frequent use of antibiotics, bacterial resistance problems have become increasingly prominent. The current antibacterial ability of the strongest polymyxin is considered "the last line of defense" of antibiotics. When the penicillin, tetracycline and other traditional antibiotics gradually fail, the medical staff can only choose polymyxin. In view of the widespread use of polymyxin in agriculture and animal husbandry. The researchers suggested that as far as possible, all use of polymyxin should be limited.
