北美紅雀( Northern Cardinal ) Cardinal是紅衣主教的意思 ,所以北美紅雀又叫紅衣主教, 因為牠的羽毛顏色鮮紅 , 和羅馬天主教的主教穿的紅袍神似而得名 ,曾經幾次改名 , 在1883年名叫Virginia Cardinal, 在1918年 , 為紀念美國的鳥類學家Charles Wallace Richmond, 而改為Richmondena Cardinalis , 在1983年 , 又改為北方紅衣主教 , 一直延用至今, 牠是Illinois伊利諾 , Indiana 印第安納, Kentucky 肯塔基 , North Carolina北卡羅來納 ,Ohio 俄亥俄 , Virginia 維吉尼亞 , West Virginia西維吉尼亞 , 七州的州鳥 , 出現在美國東部地區 , 從緬茵州到德州 , 以及墨西哥地區 , 曾經一度被人當作寵物眷養 , 也曾當籠鳥出售 , 但是從1918年開始 , 在美國被禁止買賣。

紅衣主教公鳥的羽毛顏色 , 亮麗鮮紅 , 面部和頸部有黑色的羽毛 , 非常漂亮 , 而母鳥的羽毛顏色 , 參有灰褐色 , 較暗淡沒有公鳥亮麗 , 牠們是屬於會唱歌的鳥 , 歌聲非常好聽 , 可唱出多種不同的歌, 歌聲婉轉 , 抑揚頓挫 , 有時如行雲流水一般 ,有時又像人在吹口哨一樣 , 相當動聽 , 公鳥會用歌聲來宣告地盤 ,也會很兇悍的驅趕闖入地盤的鳥類 , 母鳥每年產卵2 到 4 次 ,  而在母鳥孵蛋期間 , 公鳥會經常定時的餵食母鳥 , 也會在附近巡視警戒保護。
