Hello everyone.
Welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Garrett.
And this is Let’s Talk in English.
And my name is Esther.
Today our topic is our E Report.
That’s right.
Today we’re talking about whale and dolphin watching, right?
Whales and dolphins are kinds of sea animals.
They swim in the ocean.
But they are not fish, right?
They are not fish.
That means they can’t just breathe underwater.
Every so often they need to come up and breathe air.
They’re special animals and are quite large, right?
We can say whales are the family which dolphins belong to.
So dolphins are actually one kind of whale.
Well, many people want to see these animals when they are on a boat.
But it’s hard to get that chance.
And we’re gonna try and get that chance in today’s E Report.
We’ll also try and find our Find It answer.
Here’s the question.
What do boat captains try to do?
What do boat captains try to do?
Listen carefully to find the answer.
Now let’s go to Sonia for today’s keywords.
Whale and dolphin watching is a popular thing to do off the coast of 花蓮。
They know the places where these animals like to swim.
Boat captains try to keep a good distance from the animals.
Never try to touch or feed them.
Morning guys.
Good morning, Campbell.
Morning.
Gabe, it looks like you could use some coffee.
Yeah, that’s true.
But actually what I could use is a little more sleep.
I know, me too.
But I promise today is going to be worth the early morning.
I hope so.
Oh hey everybody.
Welcome to E Report.
My name is Campbell.
Today Emery, Gabe, and I are in Hualien.
That’s right.
And we’re going on a super awesome adventure with all of you.
Yes, we’re actually going whale and dolphin watching.
I’m pretty happy about that.
I have always wanted to see whales and dolphins swimming in the water.
But I don’t know why we need to be up so early.
You’ll see.
Oh, I almost forgot.
Here Campbell, what’s this?
Something to help me wake up?
Well, yeah, but it’s also something to keep you from getting seasick.
Oh, that’s good.
I need this.
Yeah, me too.
Cheers.
Thanks.
Oh, that’s terrible.
I know, but at least you won’t get seasick.
I think I’m awake.
Let’s go.
Whale and dolphin watching is a popular tourist activity off the coast of Hualien.
It is an amazing adventure.
Imagine this.
You are on a boat.
The wind is blowing and the sun is shining bright.
Suddenly a huge whale jumps out of the water.
Later you see some dolphins swimming fast and jumping high.
They seem like they’re playing and having fun just like you.
It’s exciting to see these animals in their natural homes.
Most people don’t get to see this.
You’ll want to bring your camera and take photos.
These are moments you’ll never forget.
Whether you’re with friends or family,
It’s a trip that brings joy and wonder to everyone.
Whale and dolphin watching is very popular, especially if you go to Hualien.
Right, you do this off the coast of Hualien.
Now when you go watching for these animals,
You go on a boat ride and hope to see them pop up out of the water.
Let’s go to Sonia for more on that last sentence.
Whale and dolphin watching is a popular thing to do off the coast of 花蓮。
The small island is off the coast of Florida.
My house is right off the road.
The man parked his bike just off the bridge to take pictures.
Thank you so much, Sonya.
Yes.
Whale and dolphin watching is an amazing adventure.
You’re on a boat.
And then suddenly a big whale jumps out of the water.
And this is very exciting to see.
These dolphins, they move fast through the water.
And they can jump very high out of the water, right?
Dolphins are so much fun.
They love to play just like we do.
They have fun with each other and have good relationships, right?
And people like to go whale and dolphin watching because they can watch the whales and dolphins interact or seem to talk to each other.
Yes.
You get to see them in their natural homes when you go whale and dolphin watching.
Of course, you could also see them at some zoos or other kinds of special water parks.
But it’s not quite the same, right?
Because they live in the sea.
Or they live in the ocean.
The ocean is another word for the sea.
So we want to see them in their natural homes.
Now friends, let’s keep watching.
How are you doing, guys?
I’m doing great.
That sunrise over the ocean was amazing.
Yeah, it was.
Now you know why we needed to be up so early.
Yeah.
It really is beautiful and I love the breeze.
But Campbell, we didn’t just wake up early to see the sunrise.
You know we’ve been sailing for a while and there hasn’t been a whale or dolphin in sight.
Ugh.
Patience, Gabe.
These things take time.
It’s early.
They’re probably just waking up.
I got it.
You know whales and dolphins, they use sounds and noises to communicate with each other, right?
Yes.
Why?
Well, maybe we can call out to them.
I’ll go first.
Okay, I don’t think that’s how this works.
You can’t just call out to the animals and expect them to just—
Whoa, did you see that?
I’ve never seen a whale or dolphin this close before.
That was amazing.
You were saying, Campbell?
Uh, that just happened by chance.
Uh-huh.
Come on, give it a try.
The ocean is big.
How do boat captains know where to find whales and dolphins for people to see?
There are several ways.
First, boat captains sail almost every day.
They often know the spots where these animals like to swim.
They also look for signs, like birds flying low over the water.
Birds like to fly near dolphins or whales as they are hunting for fish.
Sometimes they use special tools to listen for the sounds that whales and dolphins make underwater.
This can help the captain know where they are.
Also, other boats in the area might share information about recent sightings.
We know that the ocean is very, very big.
And we have a special word for the person in charge of the boat.
The person that decides where the boat is going to go.
This is the boat captain.
They decide where to go.
And they need to decide where to go to find whales and dolphins on one of these special trips.
But how can they find these animals?
They’re hard to find.
We heard that boat captains often go out in their boats.
And this way they’ll know where whales and dolphins like to swim.
Exactly.
We say these animals swim just like we swim when we go out in water.
We push our bodies forward and sometimes do this as exercise.
One of our keywords today is also the word "animal."
Animals are like dogs and cats, birds and fish.
These things move and they need air and they need food.
Right.
Animals are alive, but they’re not plants or mushrooms.
Technically, people are kind of animals as well.
Well, these boat captains look for signs or things that can tell them there are whales or dolphins.
Such as birds flying low over the water.
When boat captains see birds flying low near the water,
They know that there might be whales and dolphins nearby.
Right.
Those birds fly close along.
And those captains share information with each other so they can help you see these great animals.
Friends, let’s take a quick break.
We’ll be right back.
Let’s Talk in English.
Let’s Talk in English.
Hey, that’s the way.
Welcome back, friends.
Today we learn the word "captain."
This is the person that decides where the boat is going to go.
We have different words that are similar to this, like the words "driver" and "pilot."
Right.
Drivers are those people in a car.
When you are moving a car around, you are driving it or you are the driver.
And a pilot is the person that is flying the airplane.
Let’s continue.
Today’s lesson.
Is whale and dolphin watching safe for the animals?
It can be.
But whale and dolphin watching companies must be very responsible when they take tourists out into the ocean.
Boats can bother or even hurt whales and dolphins if they get too close or go too fast.
The noise from engines can also trouble the animals or disturb their communication.
To keep this from happening, boat captains try to keep a safe distance from the animals.
They also slow down when near them.
For tourists, it’s important not to make loud noises that could scare the animals.
People should also never try to touch or feed them.
Follow these rules and the whale and dolphin watching experience will be safe and enjoyable for everyone.
Wow, that was fantastic.
I can’t believe how many dolphins we got to see.
I know, right?
Those dolphins were so playful.
They were jumping all around the boat.
I can’t believe how close they were swimming to the boat.
It’s like they were putting on a show just for us.
This was the best day ever.
I loved seeing God’s creation like this.
Me too.
God really has created some amazing things.
Like the beautiful sunrise and all of those playful dolphins and all of us.
Well friends, thanks for joining us for today’s exciting E Report adventure.
We will see you next time.
Goodbye.
Hi.
Come on guys.
No.
Bye.

Now in this section, we learn that whale and dolphin boats need to be very careful when they take people out into the ocean.
Why is that, Garrett?
Well, it’s for a couple of different reasons.
Of course, these boats don’t want to run into the whales or dolphins.
But they also don’t want to disturb them by getting too close or going too fast.
They want these animals to live their normal lives.
Right.
If you go too fast, the boats might actually hit the dolphins and hurt them.
Friends, did you find the answer to today’s Find It question?
Our question is: What do boat captains try to do?
They try to keep a good distance from the whales and dolphins.
They try to stay far enough away.
Distance is how far you are from something.
Right.
You might say, "What is the distance between my home and the department store?"
It’s five kilometers.
Exactly.
Well, let’s go to Sonya for more on that word "distance".
Boat captains try to keep a good distance from the animals.
Please keep a good distance from the monkeys.
This is a good speed to drive at to avoid accidents.
Be sure to drink a good amount of water on hot days.
Thank you, Sonya.
Well, the boats can’t go too fast, so they slow down when they’re near the animals.
Right.
And if you do see whales or dolphins, you should be quiet as you are watching them live in their natural homes.
And we should never try to touch or feed these animals.
Let’s talk about that word "touch" briefly.
When you touch something, you use some part of your body and hit or lightly—well—touch or place it against something else.
Right.
What I’m doing now is I am touching my face.
So remember, we should never reach out and touch whales or dolphins.
Now friends, it’s time to review today’s keywords.
Here’s your first keyword: whale.
Whale.
I can see whales in the ocean.
Dolphin.
Dolphin.
Dolphins are fun to watch.
Animal.
Animal.
Do you have many animals on your farm?
Swim.
Swim.
Did you swim in the ocean?
Distance.
Distance.
The school is a long distance away.
Touch.
Touch.
Don’t touch the bird.
All right, friends.
Those are your keywords for today.
Just keep on practicing.
And now it’s your turn.
Today’s keywords are: whale, dolphins, animal, swim, distance, and touching.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence.
First one.
How well can you—
You do this in the water.
You got it.
How well can you swim?
Next.
Move very fast in the water.
These animals are smart and friendly.
That’s right.
Dolphins move very fast in the water.
Next.
The child is—
Everything.
You use your hands to do this.
The child is touching everything.
Next.
What is your favorite—
Is it a dog, a horse, a lion?
What is your favorite animal?
Next.
She kept a safe—
From the dogs.
You guessed it.
She kept a safe distance from the dogs.
Last one.
Look at that big—
This is easy.
Look at that big whale.
And look at the time.
I have to say bye for now.
But come again for your turn.
Hello, friends.
Welcome back to What’s Next.
My name is Cela.
Let’s take a look at some pictures on my iPad today.
We start with two pictures, and then guess what will happen in the third picture.
Let’s get started.
The first picture shows a boy stacking cans.
What is it?
The cans.
Maybe they have soup in them.
There are a lot of cans.
The boy is trying to put all the cans in a special way.
It looks pretty.
But is it safe?
Hmm.
This must be in a local grocery store or supermarket.
Okay, now we have a different person in the store.
It’s an old lady, and she is taking one of the soup cans.
Uh-oh.
She took one of the cans from the bottom of the stack.
It looks like the big stack of cans is starting to move.
Do you think they will fall down?
Or do you think what will happen next?
Ah yes, all the cans fell down on the floor.
What a big mess.
The boy is looking at all the cans rolling around.
He will need to clean it up fast.
The old lady does not look scared.
Maybe she can’t hear very well.
She did not see any problem taking the can from the bottom.
So whose fault is it?
The old lady or the boy who made the tall stack?
I think it was the boy’s fault.
The old lady cannot get the cans from the top, so of course she took a can from the bottom.
Maybe the boy will need to think of a new way to show the soup cans at the supermarket.
Thanks for joining me today on What’s Next.
Friends, would you like to go whale and dolphin watching?
Many people do this around the world.
Garrett, would this be something you would like to do?
I would love to.
It sounds like fun.
But if you didn’t see any animals while you were out, that would be disappointing, right?
And sometimes that happens.
We hope that you enjoyed today’s lesson.
And we hope to see you again tomorrow right here on Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye.
