Hello everyone, welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Garrett, and my name is Esther.
Today, we have our travel lesson. Yes, we do! Let’s go to Vietnam.
That’s the title for today’s lesson. Yes.
Vietnam is a country in Southeast Asia.
There are many other countries in Asia,
like China, Japan, and Singapore. Well,
Vietnam is a country that’s been in the news a lot
over the last hundred or so years,
but often for not very good reasons.
There’s been a lot of war and other
sad things that have happened there.
But today, it’s a popular travel destination, right?
It is a very popular place for people to go to,
and that’s what the word destination means.
All right, friends, today
we’ll talk all about some of the things you can find there,
some of the things you can eat there,
and talk about why
we think this is a very interesting place.
Right, and we’re going to go to our Find It question.
See if you can find the answer to this question:
Our question is, what did Terra eat in District 4?
What did Terra eat in District 4, friends?
You remember Terra,
she travels all around the world, and every month
she comes onto Greg’s interview program
to talk about the things she sees.
So it sounds like she ate something very special
at a special place called District 4.
Listen carefully to find the answer now, friends.
Let’s learn all
about our new keywords with our friend Sonia.
Terra去了越南旅遊。
他的第一個行程就是到下龍灣去坐遊輪。
I went on a cruise on Halong Bay.
名詞 Cruise 就是遊輪。
Terra覺得那是世界上最美的地方之一。
It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world.
名詞 world 就是世界。
他還去了胡志明市,說那裡的海鮮很棒。
There’s great seafood there.
名詞 seafood 就是海鮮。
Terra吃了蝸牛,
She ate snails. 名詞 snail 就是蝸牛。
Greg好像不太喜歡吃蝸牛,
他說他還是吃蝦子就好了。
Maybe I’d stick to shrimp.
慣用語 stick to 就是堅持。
Hi, Tara, welcome back.
Thanks, I had a great time in Vietnam.
Vietnam is a wonderful country.
What did you do there?
First of all, I went on a cruise
on Halong Bay.
It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world.
Why is that? The thousands of islands of the bay
come straight up from the water.
It’s amazing! I went kayaking there too.
Sounds wonderful!
Yes, friends, like we said earlier,
Terra is back on Greg’s interview program today.
Here, Greg asks interesting people
interesting questions to learn more about them.
Right, and he starts with saying, "Hi,
Tara, welcome back!" Now,
welcome back is a nice phrase you can use
if you have a family member that returns home.
You can say welcome back or welcome home.
Exactly! Well, Tara is happy to be on the show
and share about her time in Vietnam.
That is the country that she visited.
She tells us that she had a great time in Vietnam,
and Greg thinks that this place is a wonderful country,
so he wants to know what she did there. Well,
let’s talk about one of the first places she went.
She says, First of all,
I went on a cruise on Halong Bay.
Now, friends, let’s talk about this.
A bay is some water somewhere in the world.
It’s connected to a much larger bit of water, like an ocean,
but it’s closer to the land, maybe somewhat
surrounded by that land, right?
And what did Tara do? Well, she went on a cruise.
A cruise is a large boat or large ship,
and it’s often very fancy.
People go on cruises all around the world,
and if you want to visit a city,
sometimes you can go on a short cruise
to go around the city, right?
You don’t go on a cruise
just to get somewhere. You go there
because you want to enjoy your journey.
Well, this is the first thing Tara is sharing about.
So she says, First of all,
First of all, let’s go to Sonia to learn more.
Tara說首先她到下龍灣搭乘遊輪。
First of all, I went on a cruise on Halong Bay.
副詞 first 表示首先第一的意思。
而句首 first of all則強調是在眾多事項中的第一項。
來看例句:
First of all, I want to thank everyone for coming.
首先我要感謝大家光臨。
會是其他類似的地址:
Last of all, bring your own food and water.
最後一點期待自己的食物和水。
再一句:
Most important of all, we need to get there on time.
最重要的一點我們必須準時到達。
Thank you so much, Sonya. So, Tara went to Halong Bay
and says it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world.
Wow, this place must be amazing,
because Tara has traveled to many places around the world.
Yes, friends, we live in the world.
Our world is called planet Earth. Many people will say,
around the world, there are many beautiful places. Yes,
there are, but why is this place so beautiful?
Tara shares more.
She says the thousands of islands in the bay
come straight up from the water.
Right, and the word island
is not pronounced is-land even though that’s how it’s written (i-s-l-a-n-d).
It means a small piece of land that is surrounded by water.
Right, so these islands come straight up from the water.
It’s amazing, and Tara went kayaking there.
Now, Esther, remind us what that means, right?
A kayak is a very small boat,
and it’s close to the water.
You need to use paddles or oars to move around, yeah.
A kayak can have one or two people.
And the action you do when you’re on a kayak
can be called kayaking.
This sounds wonderful! And sounds wonderful is also
today’s calendar phrase:

Sounds wonderful.
Sounds wonderful,
聽起來很棒.
Let’s order seafood.
Sounds wonderful.
We can order fish. Mmm, sounds wonderful.
We can order shrimp. Mmm, sounds wonderful.
And we can order snails. Oh, that’s not.
Sounds wonderful.
Sounds wonderful,
聽起來很棒.

Well, I have heard of Halong Bay before.
It’s a famous place, and
if you look up Vietnam on the internet,
you’re sure to see lots of pictures of this place, right?
It sounds like a beautiful place
with the thousands of islands,
and you can even go kayaking there. That sounds fun!
It’s beautiful,
and you’ll get some good exercise. Well,
friends, it’s time for a quick break now.
We’ll be right back with more, so don’t go away.
We’ll be right back after this.
That’s the way! Welcome back to the show, everyone.
Now, earlier in our show, we talked about Halong Bay.
A bay is, again,
some water connected to something larger, like an ocean,
but maybe closer to land,
and probably with better
weather or not quite so many waves, right?
Often, if you visit a bay,
you’ll be able to see lots of ships and boats.
They’ll be there right at the bay.
Exactly, friends!
Let’s get back to our conversation.
And of course, I also went to Ho Chi Minh City.
Is it an interesting city?
Very.
I love street food, so I went to District 4. There’s great
seafood there.
I love seafood.
Me too! I ate snails.
They were wonderful.
Uh,
maybe I’d stick to shrimp.
Ho Chi Minh City also has great museums.
I spent time at some of them and learned a lot.
All right, we’re continuing
learning all about Tara’s travels in Vietnam,
talking about a city that she went to.
This city is today called Ho Chi Minh City.
Greg wants to know
if it’s an interesting city. If something is interesting,
it means there are many things you want to see and do there.
Exactly! Tara says it’s very interesting,
but she just uses one word. She just says, very,
and that’s all we need to know
what her answer is to the question.
Sonya, can you help us more with words like this?
Greg: Win!
胡志明市是一座有趣的城市嗎?
Terra回答:非常有趣。
Very.
在生活口語中可以用 very 來表達強烈贊同及肯定。
來看看其他類似的用語:
Your painting should have gotten first place.
你的畫作應該得第一名才對。
Exactly, 一點也沒錯。
再看一個例子:
A: We should plan a surprise birthday party for Alex.
我們應該幫 Alex
籌劃一個驚喜生日派對。
B: Totally, 絕對要。
Thank you, Sonia.
Now, there is something that Tara likes to eat,
and she says that she loves street food.
Street food is food that you can get on the street,
often bought by vendors.
They’re not food that you can buy in a fancy restaurant.
No, street food is often fast,
easy, and cheaper than restaurant food. It might not be super healthy,
but it can be really tasty, right?
So, she went to a place in District Four to buy street food.
Now, the word district refers to a part of something, often
a part of a city.
The word is similar to the word section. Exactly.
And it sounds like Ho Chi Minh City is separated
into districts with numbers.
Tara went to District Four,
and she says there’s great seafood there. Great seafood.
Two words: the words sea (ocean) and food.
So, seafood includes things like fish and crab,
shrimp and mussels, things I like to eat.
And we put sea and food together
to make one new word: seafood.
And friends, that takes us to our Find It question.
What did Tara eat in District Four?
She ate snails.
Hmm, Garrett, can you tell us what snails are?
Sure, and that doesn’t really sound like seafood,
although some of them might live under the water.
Snails are kind of like insects. They come out often
after it rains outside.
They move very slowly and live in a hard shell.
Right, you see them on the ground, and after the rain,
sometimes I need to be careful I don’t step on a snail.
Right, they’re slimy and soft,
and well, for many people, they don’t sound like a wonderful snack,
but many people around the world do eat them.
They’re popular in places like France and Italy.
Tara says that the snails were wonderful,
but Greg says that he will stick to
shrimp. That means he will
keep to eating shrimp and not snails.
Yeah, if you say you’ll stick to something,
it means you will stay having that thing
and not try new things. You’ll just stick to that.
Now, Tara tells us that Ho Chi Minh City also has great museums.
Remember the word museum?
It’s a place where you can go
and see many things from the past and the present.
Well, Tara spent time there,
and she learned a lot about Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City.
So, friends, if you ever find yourself in this city,
be sure to visit some of those museums, right?
You can go on a cruise on Halong Bay,
go to District Four to eat seafood,
and visit some nice museums.
Maybe you can even try a snail!
Well, friends, it’s time now for us to review
today’s keywords.
Here’s our first keyword: cruise.
Cruise.
Let’s go on a cruise to Mexico.
World.
World.
He wants to travel the world.
Seafood.
Seafood.
Let’s have seafood for dinner.
Snail.
Snails move very slowly.
Stick to.
Stick to.
No coke for me, I’ll stick to water.
Friends, those are today’s keywords. Keep up the good job.
And now it’s your turn.
Today’s words are: cruise, world, seafood, snails, and stick to.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence. First one:
Where in the… do tigers live?
You need a noun here.
You’re right: Where in the world do tigers live?
Next:
For my birthday, I went on a...
This is a tour out on the ocean.
Good job! For my birthday, I went on a cruise.
Next:
Let’s... the plan.
You don’t want to change your plans, so...
Let’s stick to the plan.
Next:
This is very good.
It’s food from the sea or ocean.
That’s right! This seafood is very good.
Last one:
Do you eat...?
Great answer! Do you eat snails?
Probably not, but do you have a good time here at your turn?
Hi, Tara, welcome back!
Thanks! I had a great time in Vietnam.
Vietnam is a wonderful country.
What did you do there?
First of all, I went on a cruise on Halong Bay.
It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world.
Why is that? The thousands of islands of the bay
come straight up from the water.
It’s amazing! I went kayaking there too.
Sounds wonderful!
And of course, I also went to Ho Chi Minh City.
Is it an interesting city?
Very!
I love street food,
so I went to District Four. There’s great seafood there.
I love seafood.
Me too! I ate snails.
They were wonderful.
Maybe I’d stick to shrimp.
Ho Chi Minh City
also has great museums.
I spent time at some of them and learned a lot.
One, two, let’s review, okay?
What are we talking about today?
Seafood! Seafood!
Where? I don’t see food.
No, silly, I said seafood.
Seafood!
You know, food from the ocean.
Oh, seafood, like fish.
Yes! And shrimp.
Yes! And chicken.
No, chicken is not seafood.
Ha ha, just kidding! I love seafood!
Especially seafood from Vietnam.
Oh, maybe we should take a cruise to Vietnam.
But you can get seafood from Vietnam
right here in our city.
Oh, what are we waiting for? Let’s call and order seafood.
Okay.
Hi,
is this Ho Chi Minh Cafe?
Yes.
I’d like to order some shrimp and fish and snails.
Okay.
Thanks! See you soon.
Snails? Yes.
Snails are delicious.
You’d like them?
No thanks. I’ll eat the shrimp and fish, you eat the snails.
Hello, Grandpa!
Are you ready for some questions?
Oh, yes, I’m always ready and I remember everything.
Then let’s get started!
Yeah!
Here’s the first question:
What two things did Tara do on Halong Bay?
On Halong Bay, yes.
It’s a bay in Vietnam.
Oh, did Tara go fishing there?
No, she went in a boat. She went on a...
Oh, she went on a cruise.
That’s right! What else did she do?
Oh, I remember! She also went kayaking there.
That’s right! She went on a cruise
and she also went kayaking. Good job!
Yeah!
Hey, don’t forget, there’s one more question.
Oh, yeah. Here’s the second question:
What is your favorite street food?
My favorite street food is street potatoes.
Street potatoes?
Yeah, potatoes that are orange inside, Grandpa!
I think you mean sweet potatoes, not street potatoes.
Well, they’re street and they’re sweet potatoes!
Yeah, I guess you’re right, and I like them too.
Well, that’s good!
Well, friends, today
one of my
favorite phrases we talked about is that phrase stick to,
and I think it’s a great phrase when we’re talking about
travel because when you’re traveling,
you’re not just sticking to what you’re used to.
Right? When you travel,
you need to experience a lot of new things
and be brave to try new kinds of food.
Many people stick to eating the same kinds of things
all the time. They stick to listening to the same music
or they stick to watching the same kinds of movies.
But maybe you can try something new, right?
Be like Tara, try snails if you travel or try something new.
Visit a new place
you might not visit, or go to a
museum about something that you might not be interested in.
Exactly! Maybe you’ll find you are interested in it after all.
Well, friends, stick to learning English.
We know that that is a new experience for many of you,
but you’re doing a great job. We are very proud of you,
and we hope to see you again tomorrow right here on
Let’s Talk in English. Goodbye!

hello friends
welcome to Let’s Talk in English
my name is Esther, and my name is Garrett
you’re back for another travel lesson
and the name of our lesson is:
Let’s go to Vietnam
Let’s go to Vietnam!
Let’s go talk about yesterday’s lesson. Yes, friends,
we started talking about Vietnam yesterday.
As Tara shared all about her travels,
she shared that one of the most beautiful places in the world
is Halong Bay. This is a place where you can go on a cruise
and see lots of islands coming out from the ocean.
Exactly. You can even go kayaking there.
It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world.
You can also visit Ho Chi Minh City,
where there is wonderful seafood in District Four.
And Tara was very brave—she had snails!
But Greg said that he would stick to eating shrimp.
Now, would you like to have snails, Esther?
Um, I don’t think so. How about you, Garrett?
I’ve had them a couple of times.
The texture is weird, but if you have nice flavors with them,
they’re fine.
True. Do they eat shrimp in French food?
I don’t know the answer to that,
but shrimp is also a great food!
All right, friends,
we will learn much more about Vietnam in today’s lesson
as we try and find our Find It answer.
Here’s our question:
Where is Train Street?
Where is Train Street?
Listen carefully to find the answer.
Now let’s go to Sonia, who will teach us today’s keywords.
越南的河內有一條火車街,一天內火車會經過好幾次。
several times a day形容詞 several 就是「幾個」的意思。
Susie 說火車街真有趣,她要 James 看看所有的小商店和咖啡店:
Look at all the little shops and cafes.
名詞 shop 就是商店,而名詞 cafe 就是咖啡店。
不過 Susie 很懷疑,走在火車街上不是蠻危險的嗎?
Isn’t it kind of dangerous to be here?
形容詞 dangerous 就是「危險的」。
她覺得火車經過時會離她和 James 很近:
The train will pass really close to us.
副詞 close 就是「靠近地」。
Isn’t this a great picture, Susie?
It is.
Do trains run on that track down the street?
Yes, several times a day.
Wouldn’t it be fun to walk on that street?
Not when a train is coming!
So where is the street?
Train Street is in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Wow, this is a fun street!
Look at all the little shops and cafes!
Let’s walk around and wait for a train to come.
James is here with Susie for our lesson today,
and James is showing Susie a picture.
James thinks that this picture is a very nice picture,
so he asks Susie:
“Isn’t this a great picture, Susie?”
He wants to show her something that he likes.
And so Susie takes a look at it and agrees.
She says, “It is,” and she asks him a question.
She asks:
“Do trains run on that track down the street?”
Yes, trains run on something called a track. It’s made of metal,
and that’s the special path that trains go on.
Yeah, you might call them “train tracks.”
So we’ve learned a little bit more
about this picture—there are tracks in the picture,
but no train.
That’s why Susie wants to know if a train would run
on that track, right?
And there, the word run has a special meaning.
Sonia, can you help us with more meanings of the word run?
Susie 問 James:
火車會沿著街上那條鐵軌行駛嗎?
Do trains run on that track down the street?
動詞 run 除了「跑」,還可以有不同的意思和用法。
首先可以指交通工具的行駛:
The bus runs along that route every day.
那輛公車每天沿著那條路線行駛。
再來可以指運作或進行:
My car stopped running yesterday.
我的車昨天不能動了。
最後可以指經營管理:
Jane runs her own company.
Jane 經營著自己的公司。
Thank you, Sonia.
James replies to Susie’s question, and he says, “Yes, several times a day.”
The word several means “a few,” yeah—quite a few. It’s not a specific number,
but it’s not a lot, and it’s not a one-time thing. It is several times.
And James asks, “Wouldn’t it be fun to walk on that street?”
That does sound fun.
Well, Susie tells us that it would not be fun
when a train is running on that track.
Exactly. So this road, or street,
has both train tracks and people that walk along it too.
It sure sounds a little dangerous.
But Susie wants to know:
Where is the street?
What city is it in?
What country is it in?
Well, that question sounds familiar.
That’s because it’s similar to our Find It question:
Where is Train Street?
It’s in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Train Street is in Hanoi, Vietnam—yes.
This is one of the bigger cities in Vietnam,
and it has this famous, special street called Train Street.
And friends, our characters from our conversation have now
traveled in their imaginations to Train Street
to see what’s going on.
They look all around them,
and they think it’s amazing. So Susie says,
“Wow, this is a fun street! Look at all the little shops and cafes!”
Yeah! So along this street,
there are places you can visit to buy things—those would be shops.
Shops sell all kinds of things,
from gifts to things you need in your daily life, right?
And even food. And a coffee shop can also be called a cafe.
A cafe is a shop where you can get drinks
and sometimes light food.
Yeah, when we use the word cafe,
we usually mean a place you can sit and enjoy your time for a little while.
There will be a place to sit.
And James says, “Let’s walk around—walk around Train Street and wait for a train to come.”
Mmm… so will a train come?
And what will happen when it does?
Friends, you’ll have to wait to find out what happens.
We’re going to take a quick break. We’ll be right back after this.
Let’s Talk in English—ten!
Welcome back to the show, everyone!
Welcome back to Hanoi, Vietnam,
where you can walk along a street—when suddenly,
a train starts coming your way!
Right! This is Train Street in Hanoi,
and this is where Susie and James are right now.
It sounds like it’s a popular tourist spot,
but what will happen when a train does come?
Well, let’s get back to our conversation.
“Isn’t it kind of dangerous to be here?”
“The train will pass really close to us.”
“We’ll be fine.”
“The local people will tell us when the train is coming.”
“They won’t have to—I hear it coming! Let’s get out of here!”
So, you wouldn’t want to be there when the train comes?
No, thank you!
But you can go take pictures and show them to me when you get back!
All right, so they are in Hanoi, Vietnam,
and we’re waiting for a train to come, right?
And Susie thinks that it’s kind of dangerous that they’re there,
because she says, “The train will pass really close to where they are standing.”
Exactly. Friends, let’s talk about this word: dangerous.
If something is dangerous, it can hurt you or cause some pain.
Now, we can say a thing is dangerous, like a knife or a gun,
but we can also say that a situation is dangerous too.
Right. You might be in a place where there is a lot of crime.
Then you can say, “This is a dangerous place.”
And let’s talk about the word close.
Susie said that the train will pass really close to us.
The word close here means “near.”
Exactly. I am holding this clipboard close to me.
The opposite of the word close is far.
You can use these words when you’re asking for directions.
Say: “The train station is close to here.”
“How far do I need to walk?”
Right. Well, James doesn’t think it will be dangerous.
He says, “We’ll be fine.”
If you are fine, it means that you are okay.
You aren’t going to get hurt or be in serious danger.
James says, “The local people will tell us when the train is coming.”
So they will know when that train is coming
and when they need to get out of the way, right?
Because they are the local people.
They are the people who live in Hanoi.
They know when the train is coming.
But it sounds like they won’t have to—why is that?
They won’t have to tell James and Susie.
Susie already knows the train is coming.
She can hear it, right?
She says, “I hear it coming.”
Sonia,可以幫我們解釋這句話嗎?
Susie 告訴 James 他們得趕快離開,因為她聽到火車來了:“I hear it coming.”
感官動詞 hear 表示「聽見、聽到」的意思,後面可以加受詞,再加「現在分詞」或「原形動詞」作為補語。
首先來看:
hear + something/someone + V-ing,用來強調當下聽到某個動作正在進行中。
例如:
I hear birds singing outside.
我聽到外面有鳥在叫。
或是:
Didn’t you hear the baby crying last night?
你昨晚沒聽到寶寶在哭嗎?
如果是:
hear + something/someone + V(原形動詞),那就是強調聽到整個事件或動作的全部。
來看例句:
We hear the MRT pass by every three minutes.
我們每三分鐘就聽到捷運駛過。
或是:
I’d heard him leave the house.
我聽到他離開屋子了。
Thank you, Sonia.
Because Susie hears a train coming, she wants them to leave,
so she says, “Let’s get out of here.”
Let’s get out of here.
Let’s get over to today’s calendar phrases.

Let’s get out of here.
Let’s get out of here.
我們趕快離開吧。
This place is dark.
Let’s get out of here.
This place is scary.
Let’s get out of here.
This place is dangerous.
Let’s get out of here.
But we live here. This is our home.
Oh, right. Yeah.
Let’s get out of here.
 Let’s get out of here.
我們趕快離開吧。

James and Susie are back in safety.
James says, “You wouldn’t want to be there when the train comes.”
Well, they’re not there anymore. They are no longer in Hanoi.
Susie says, “No, thank you,” but she says,
“You can go.” She says that James can go.
Then James can take pictures and show them to her when he gets back.
Well, friends,
if you do go to this Train Street and a train comes,
you’ll probably be fine because people go there every day.
Right, it’s a very famous tourist spot.
I think it would be fun to check out those shops and see what they sell.
Right, to see what the place looks like
and experience getting out of the way—away from the train—really quickly.
And maybe going to the cafe,
because I heard that in Vietnam, there is very famous coffee.
Vietnamese coffee is delicious.
Maybe you can even try it where you live.
Just keep in mind—it’s very sweet!
Friends, what would you do if you got a chance to go to Hanoi?
Would you like to go to Train Street as well?
Talk about that, and make sure to review with us.
Let’s review today’s keywords.
Here is our first keyword: several
Several – He ate several apples.
Shop
Shop – What does that shop sell?
Cafe
Cafe – Can we eat at that cafe?
Dangerous
Dangerous – Crossing the road here is dangerous.
Close
Close – Don’t get too close to the edge.
Friends, those are today’s keywords. Keep practicing!
And now it’s your turn.
Today’s words are: several, shop, cafe, dangerous, and close.
Now, it’s your turn to use them in a sentence:
First one:
I need to buy a gift at that gift…
This is a place, correct?
I need to buy a gift at that gift shop.
Next:
This is a... area. It’s not safe here.
You got it!
This is a dangerous area.
Next:
Can you give me... plates?
You want more than one.
Can you give me several plates?
Next:
What’s special about this...
Correct!
What’s special about this cafe?
Last one:
We can sit... to the front.
That’s right!
We can sit close to the front.
And we can see each other here again at Your Turn!
Isn’t this a great picture, Susie?
It is.
Do trains run on that track down the street?
Yes, several times a day.
Wouldn’t it be fun to walk on that street?
Not when a train is coming.
So, where is the street?
Train Street is in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Wow, this is a fun street!
Look at all the little shops and cafes!
Let’s walk around and wait for a train to come.
Isn’t it kind of dangerous to be here?
The train will pass really close to us.
We’ll be fine.
The local people will tell us when the train is coming.
They won’t have to. I hear it coming! Let’s get out of here!
So, you wouldn’t want to be there when the train comes?
No, thank you! But you can go—take pictures and show them to me when you get back.
One, two—let’s review!
So, what do you think about Train Street?
It sounds great!
There are a lot of little shops and cafes there.
I know!
But you have to be careful because trains run down the street.
So, the trains pass really close.
Isn’t that kind of dangerous?
It can be, but it’s okay.
Local people will tell you when the train comes.
But what if they don’t tell you?
You’ll hear it coming. Then you know to get out of there.
Good!
Train Street sounds like a fun place.
I would love to be there when a train comes.
Not me! I’d rather be in a little shop or maybe have tea in a little cafe.
Ah, or maybe eating snails in a restaurant!
Uh, no thanks. No snails for me!
Well, friends, it sure was fun talking about Train Street and Hanoi, Vietnam.
Wonder what else you can find in that city?
Well, I heard that there is a lot of street food in Hanoi.
Many people like to visit Vietnam because street food there is very tasty.
And that’s true of a lot of places around the world.
Often, it is fun to go to fancy restaurants,
but you don’t get to experience what normal people eat in that city, right?
If you really want the local food,
then go where a lot of local people are—
and many people will be at the market, buying street food.
And that’s why that word local is fun to use.
Something that is local is specific to that area or that city.
When you visit somewhere,
try local food, talk to local people,
and maybe learn the local language—great!
Take the local transportation—
that might be the bus or the subway that everyone takes there.
Well, friends, we’ll see you again tomorrow,
right here on Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye!

Hello everyone
Welcome to Let’s Talk in English
my name is Garrett, and my name is Esther.
Today, our topic is travel. Let’s go to Vietnam again, friends!
Yes, we’re finishing up our lesson on Vietnam today, right?
And yesterday,
we learned many words. We learned that on Train Street,
you will see many shops and cafes.
Not just many—
you can find several. That was one of those great words
that we learned. It means quite a few, right?
And trains will
run on the track, and they will pass through that street.
It might seem dangerous.
You might think you’re going to get hit by the train
as it moves close to you.
But the local people will let you know
when it’s time to move to the side.
And now, let’s go to today’s "Find It" question.
Our question is:
What are the people of Vietnam known for?
What are the people of Vietnam known for?
Friends, we will find out as we go through today’s lesson.
Now, let’s go to Sonia, who will teach us our new keywords.

你在越南會看到很多綠色的山脈和稻田,尤其是在沙壩。
You’ll find plenty of green mountains and rice fields,
especially in Sapa.
副詞 especially 就是「尤其」。
你可以走訪當地的村莊。
You can visit local villages.
名詞 village 就是「村莊」。
越南的食物中,最受歡迎之一的就是河粉。
它是一道加了牛肉或雞肉的美味湯麵。
It’s a tasty noodle soup with beef or chicken.
形容詞 tasty 就是「美味的」,
而名詞 soup 就是「湯」。
越南人友善又好客,見到人通常會微微地鞠躬,以表達對人的尊敬。
They often bow a little when they greet others to show respect.
動詞 bow 就是「鞠躬」,而名詞 respect 就是「尊敬」。

Jean, tell everybody—
Vietnam is a
beautiful country with wonderful beaches by the blue ocean.
You’ll also find plenty of green mountains and rice fields,
especially in Sapa. There,
you can hike through the hills,
visit local villages, and see the amazing rice terraces.
The cities are wonderful too.
They are full of energy with busy streets,
colorful markets, and friendly people.
Warm weather and beautiful nature
make Vietnam a great place to visit.
If you’ve ever looked at a map and found Vietnam,
you’ll notice it’s a long, thin country with
lots and lots of coast.
That’s why it has great beaches, right?
And many people think it’s a beautiful country
with wonderful beaches—yes,
because it’s surrounded by the blue ocean.
You’ll also find plenty of green mountains and
rice fields. Our lesson tells us you can find these fields
especially in Sapa. Yes,
especially in Sapa.
Now, if you want people to focus on something,
you can say especially.
It can be found in a lot of places,
but especially in this one. If you go there,
you can hike through the hills, visit local villages,
and see the amazing
rice terraces. Now, a village is like a very small
town where people live, right?
And you will also see amazing rice terraces.
These are places where you can see
rice growing by the mountain. It kind of looks jagged,
yeah, in different levels—
kind of like steps.
The cities are interesting too.
We hear they’re full of energy with busy streets,
colorful markets, and friendly people.
Now, let’s go to Sonia.

越南的城市也很美妙,它們充滿了活力,有著繁忙的街道、色彩繽紛的市集,以及友善的人們。
They are full of energy with busy streets, colorful markets, and friendly people.
在寫作中舉出一系列的描述、補充或例子,可以使行文更精簡、豐富並容易閱讀。
來看幾個例句:
My brother is full of funny jokes, smart ideas, and helpful advice.
我的哥哥有滿腦子好玩的笑話、聰明的點子和助人的建議。
Carrie likes to hike in the mountains, swim in the ocean, and bike in the forest.
Carrie 喜歡去爬山、在海裡游泳以及在樹林裡騎自行車。
再看一句:
Houses with large bedrooms, clean bathrooms, and good lighting are the best.
最好的房子就是要有大臥室、乾淨的浴室和充足的光線。
Thank you so much, Sonia.
Well, in Vietnam, you can find warm weather and beautiful nature,
and that’s what makes it such a great place to visit.
Right, the weather is warm—it’s not too hot,
and it’s not too cold.
That’s why many people would like to visit.
Now, let’s go to the next part of today’s lesson.
Vietnam is famous for its wonderful food.
One of the most popular dishes is pho,
a tasty noodle soup with beef or chicken.
People eat it for breakfast,
lunch, or dinner.
People also love to eat a special type of sandwich
filled with meat,
pickled vegetables, and more.
Another favorite dish is spring rolls.
They are made by rolling shrimp,
pork, and vegetables in rice paper.
Dip them in a tasty sauce before eating them.
For many people, when they think of Vietnam,
they think of the food, right? It is very wonderful.
And there is a very popular dish from Vietnam
you may have had before.
It’s called pho.
It’s a tasty noodle soup with beef or chicken.
Something that’s tasty tastes good—
it’s yummy, right? And it is a noodle soup.
So if something has soup,
it means there is water or other liquids in it.
You might think we would use the word drink,
but in English, for soup, we still use the word eat.
Well, here we heard people eat pho for breakfast,
lunch, or dinner.
And they also love to eat
a special type of sandwich.
This sandwich is filled with meat,
pickled vegetables, and more.
Garrett, can you tell us—what are pickled vegetables?
Sure! It’s vegetables that go through a special process
that makes them a bit more sour,
but allows you to keep them around longer—
sometimes not even in the fridge.
Well, another favorite dish is spring rolls.
These are rolls made with shrimp, pork, and vegetables,
and they are wrapped in a rice wrapper on the outside.
Yeah, you can also call that rice paper.
Dip them in a tasty sauce before eating them.
They’re great for a meal or a nice snack.
Right, and these spring rolls are not deep-fried—
they are in rice paper. Oh,
I do love deep-fried ones though!
Friends, it’s time for a quick break.
Now we’ll be right back just after this—
Let’s Talk in English!
Sasta wave!
Welcome back to the show, friends!
Today, we’re learning all about the different things you’ll find
in Vietnam—like terraced rice fields.
These are fields that look like stairs,
but they’re not for walking up.
It’s a special way
that people are able to grow a lot of things
even on a steep mountainside, right?
Sometimes, when you look at pictures of Vietnam,
you’ll see these terraced rice fields.
In other countries, you’ll see terraced
tea plantations—
or places where they plant tea.
Let’s continue with our lesson.
The people of Vietnam are known for being friendly
and welcoming.
They often bow a little
when they greet others to show respect.
Family is very important to them,
and they take care of their parents and grandparents.
The people also enjoy getting together to eat meals.
Many people in Vietnam wear a special dress called ao dai.
This long dress is worn by both men and women,
often on special occasions.
Well, Esther, what do you think of when you think of France?
Well, I think of the Eiffel Tower,
and I think of people being kind of
proud of the French language.
Right. When you think of a country,
you think of something special about it.
Friends, this takes us to our Find It question:
What are the people of Vietnam known for?
They’re known for being friendly and welcoming.
Yes, people know them for being friendly. If you’re friendly,
it means you’re nice to people, and you will talk to them
and make them feel like they are your friends.
They are known for these things.
Let’s go to Sonia for more on that.

越南的人民以友善又好客而聞名。
The people of Vietnam are known for being friendly and welcoming.
片語 be known for 表示「以……而聞名」,後面可以加動名詞或名詞。來看例句:
My mom is known for being kind and gentle.
我媽媽以善良溫柔著稱。
或是:
Peter is known for remembering everything.
Peter 以什麼都能記住而聞名。
再看一句:
Italy is known for its delicious food and beautiful art.
義大利以美食和美麗的藝術品而聞名。
Thanks, Sonya. So, Vietnamese people often
bow a little when they greet others—just like this.
They do that to show respect, right? When you bow,
you move your body forward a little.
In places like Japan and Korea, people also
bow to show respect.
Respect is showing someone
that you think they are important.
In some places, it’s important—especially
when you’re talking to someone
who is older or seen as more important than you, right?
You might even use this word bow when you see a king.
People used to bow to the king.
Now, we learn that family is very important
to the people in Vietnam,
and they take care of their parents and grandparents.
Family is very important
is today’s calendar phrase.

And so are friends. Oh—

Sorry. Yeah, okay.
Family is very important.
Family is very important.

you might see people wearing special dresses called ao dai.

One, two, let’s review!
So, what did we learn about Vietnam?
Well, there are plenty of things to see and do there.
That’s right!
Vietnam has beautiful beaches by the ocean,
and plenty of green mountains and
rice fields.
You can visit local villages with
amazing rice terraces. Oh—
and Vietnam also has wonderful cities,
busy streets, colorful markets, and friendly people.

Vietnam is famous for food—
wonderful food like pho!
Mmm, a tasty noodle soup you can eat any time. And
there are sandwiches with
meat and pickled vegetables,
and spring rolls dipped in tasty sauce. Mmm!
I’m getting hungry—let’s eat!
But wait—
before we eat, let’s talk about the people of Vietnam.
Good idea. They are very friendly and welcoming.
They even bow to show respect.
And family is very important to them.
They love getting together and eating meals.
Eating meals together is a great idea.
So… can we eat now?
Yes! How about some pho?
Mmm… it’s good at any time.
Great!
Hey,
welcome back, friends!
My name is Cela, and this is What’s Next.
In this feature, we look at pictures that tell a story.
Let’s look at the first
two pictures and then guess what will happen next.
Our first picture has two people cooking in the kitchen.
They have special hats and clothes, so let’s call them cooks.
What are they cooking?
Whatever it is, it must be in the pots.
Maybe it’s soup.
Both cooks look happy as they work together.
That’s nice.
Okay, now the cook is tasting the soup from the other cook.
She is holding a large spoon.
The other cook is a little distracted.
He does not see what is happening in his pot.
One pot is starting to bubble over.
Maybe it is cooking too fast.
I think the cook should pay attention. What will happen next?
Boom! The soup exploded! Oh wow!
What happened?
The cook was distracted.
He did not see the problem
until it was too late. Now the soup is in the air!
The other cook saw the problem too late and did not warn him.
I guess cooking is like driving—
you have to always pay attention.
It makes sense. You always have to pay attention
when cooking something in
the kitchen. If you get distracted,
you might have a big mess. That cook might have to clean
everything up and start over.
Thanks for joining me today on What’s Next.
Well, even if you can’t travel all the way to Vietnam,
one thing you probably can do is enjoy some Vietnamese food, right?
Whether you want to eat spring
rolls or pho, you can probably find that wherever you are.
Exactly—grab a delicious
bowl of noodle
soup and dream of rice terraces
far away.
And friends, we hope we’ll see you again tomorrow.
That’s right—here on
Let’s Talk in English! Goodbye!
