Hello friends,
My name is Anne Marie,
and today is a great day to learn something new.
So let’s do that together, friends.
My name is John,
and this is Studio Classroom.
We have a question to start you off with today, friends:
Do you think people are polite online?
Ooh, okay.
Polite is the opposite of that word, rude or impolite, right?
I think people want to be polite online generally,
but they are often impolite. They’re often rude.
I might have to disagree a little bit, John.
I think most people are rude online
because they aren’t talking to people face to face.
We’ll get into that a little bit more in just a moment
in our lesson called "Trolls on the Internet."
Let’s go to our first reading for today:
Trolls on the Internet
Don’t let a troll get to you.
Have you ever been upset by a negative statement
someone has posted online about you or one of your posts?
Then you’re not alone.
This situation is so common
that anyone who spends much time on social media
has probably experienced their fair share.
In 2021, about 41% of American adults had experienced some
form of online harassment,
and it’s not decreasing.
A person who offends, causes conflict,
or attacks people in this manner on purpose is known as
an internet troll.
Hi everyone, welcome to Language Lab. I’m Jack.
我們先來看 "decrease" 這個字,意思是減少或下降,它可以當動詞或名詞使用,但重音的位置不一樣。
當動詞時,重音在第二音節,念成 "decrease"。
來看例句:
I suggest that you decrease the amount of sugar in that recipe because the honey and raisins already make the cookies sweet.
我建議你減少食譜中的糖量,因為蜂蜜和葡萄乾已經讓餅乾很甜了。
或者是:
Do you think the attendance at our book club is decreasing because of the cold weather?
你認為我們讀書會的出席率下降是因為寒冷的天氣嗎?
"Decrease" 當名詞時,重音則是在第一音節,要念成 "decrease"。
譬如:
Because of an increase in construction in the area, there has been a decrease in birds and other wildlife.
由於該地區建設工程的增加,鳥類和其他野生動物數量減少了。
Thank you so much, Jack. Well, friends, we start off here
with a sentence: "Don’t let a troll get to you."
Now, we already saw this word "troll."
Let’s talk about what it means, okay?
If you’ve ever read a storybook and there is an evil
troll in it, you might know what a troll is.
A troll is a pretend or mythical creature
that’s usually either really little and ugly,
or really big and ugly. So,
trolling is a verb that we use
for this word as well, to act like a troll online, okay?
So this kind of troll is a little
bit different. We’re not talking about someone who is ugly,
we’re talking about someone who is rude
on purpose. So,
when you see this word used in our lesson,
that’s what we’re talking about.
Here’s an example of how you could use "troll" in a sentence:
"Don’t pay attention to him.
He’s just a troll.
He’s being rude on purpose."
We also see the idea of "getting to someone."
Now, when you get to someone, or someone gets to you,
it means that you’re annoying or upsetting someone
because you’re doing something persistently.
That’s right, you could say:
"I tried not to be annoyed by the dogs barking,
but eventually,
it really got to me, and I yelled at the dog."
Okay, great example!
Now we move on here:
"Have you ever been upset by a negative statement
someone has posted online
about you or one of your posts?
Then you’re not alone." We mean that most people have come
into contact with trolls. How does our lesson continue, John?
Well, we read that this is a common situation. In fact,
this situation is so common
that anyone who spends much time on social media
has probably experienced
their fair share. Now,
someone’s "fair share" is a phrase that you should really know.
It means a decent amount
or enough of something.
But let’s use it in a sentence,
because that’s the way to understand this, okay?
Here’s an example:
"She took more than her fair share of candy."
The idea here is that there’s
enough candy for everyone to have the same amount,
and because she took more than her fair share,
someone else’s portion will probably be smaller.
Interesting. So normally,
"fair share" is a good thing.
"Make sure everyone gets their fair share of cake."
But when you say it in this way,
it kind of means "I’ve had enough," like:
"I’ve had my fair share of rain this season. I’m ready for a change in the weather."
It means we don’t want anymore.
And we don’t want
any more of internet trolls in this situation.
In 2021, about 41% of American adults
had experienced some form of online harassment.
What a terrible statistic! Harassment is terrible.
It means aggressive pressure or aggressive intimidation.
Oh,
if you’ve experienced harassment,
you know that it’s unpleasant. There’s a verb there:
"to harass someone."
You could say:
"The crows harassed
the eagle when it flew too close to their nest."
And of course,
harassment is a very strong word.
We use this for real-life situations also.
You could be harassed
while you are walking down the street if someone is yelling
rude things to you.
And a lot of times,
when we talk about this in real-life situations,
it means that you can actually get in trouble,
for example with the police, if you are harassing someone.
But here in this situation,
online harassment isn’t necessarily illegal activity.
It’s just really bothering someone persistently.
That’s right, and we learn that someone who harasses
on purpose is called a troll.
We read here,
"a person who offends,
causes conflict, or attacks people in this manner
on purpose is known as an internet troll."
Now, "on purpose," you can also say that as
"intentionally" or even "deliberately."
It means it’s not a mistake.
They’re trying to do that.
Exactly. Here’s how you could use "on purpose" in a sentence:
"The little boy hit his classmate on purpose."
This means that he looked at his classmate
and he wanted to hurt him,
so he hit him on purpose.
Alright, friends,
we have more to learn
about internet trolls in just a moment. First,
let’s go to our next reading of this article:
Trolls on the Internet
Some say people engage in this
kind of activity to cause mischief
and bother people while getting attention.
Additionally,
people online don’t need to use their real identities,
so they don’t face any consequences.
我們再來看名詞 mischief,意思是頑皮或惡作劇。
來看例句:
Frank loved his new puppy, but it was constantly chewing his shoes and causing other mischief.
Frank 很愛他的新小狗,但牠經常咬他的鞋子和弄壞其他東西。
或是:
My son’s teacher told me that although Bobby is a good student, his mischief regularly disrupts the class.
我兒子的老師告訴我,雖然芭比是個好學生,但他的惡作劇經常擾亂了課堂秩序。
mischief 的形容詞是 mischievous,例如:
My mischievous brother rearranged all the furniture while we slept.
我那頑皮的弟弟趁我們睡覺時重新擺設了所有的家具。
Okay, friends, in this next section we are going to talk about why people troll others on the internet.
As you heard John say earlier, troll can also be a verb.
So, someone who harasses people online is called a troll, but you can also call that harassment trolling.
So, if you’re trolling someone online, you are a troll.
Let’s read about the reasons why.
Some say people engage in this kind of activity to cause mischief and bother people while getting attention.
There are some great things to look at in this sentence.
First, we see that word engage.
If you engage in something, it means that you participate in it or you become involved in it.
You could say:
He engaged in illegal activities and was arrested by the police.
Right here, they’re engaging in these online activities that aren’t good, but we’re talking about why they do it.
Some people say they’re trying to cause mischief.
You learned all about causing mischief, but also we’d see that word bother, to bother people.
Now, bother means to irritate or annoy. Sometimes, we even say "to get on someone’s nerves" means to bother them.
But let’s use that in a sentence.
Here’s an example, friends:
My cat likes to bother me while I’m trying to get work done.
It’s pretty cute, actually, so I don’t mind that much.
It doesn’t get on your nerve?
No, not too bad. Well, cats are cute, but words online can really hurt people, no matter what the person’s motives are.
I think we all need to be careful.
Sometimes, it’s easy to try to make your friends laugh by saying something mean, but slowly you become a bully or a troll.
Now, friends, we read:
Additionally, people online don’t need to use their real identities, so they don’t face any consequences.
Let’s talk about that word identities first.
Okay, so when we’re talking about someone’s identity, we’re talking about who they are.
Your identity in life could be something as simple as what your name is, where you live, and what you do.
But identity can sometimes be used to talk about who you feel you are as a person as well, what you identify as.
For example, if you are a doctor, that is part of your identity.
That’s right.
Have you ever heard about a secret identity?
Sometimes, characters in a movie might have a secret identity where they fight crime.
But here, trolls have a secret identity of causing mischief and trouble online.
We also read they don’t face the consequences, and that phrase to face the consequences means to see the result of one’s actions, so you experience the result of what you’ve done.
If you don’t think before you speak, you’ll have to face the consequences.
Alright, friends, we have more to learn, so let’s go to our info cloud right now.
Hello, friends, welcome back to Info Cloud. Rex, have you ever heard someone say,
“Don’t take the bait”?
What does that mean to you?
Hey, Garrett.
Definitely.
When someone says that, it usually means “don’t fall for a trap or a trick.”
Exactly.
The term comes from fishing. If you want to catch fish, you have to put bait on your fish hook.
If fish take the bait, they get caught by your hook.
Hey, that’s very interesting.
Yes, but now, of course, we use the phrase in all kinds of situations.
So, in everyday life, if someone is trying to get a reaction from you or provoke you, they might say something to get you to argue or react emotionally.
That’s when you should remember to not take the bait.
Right, and for example, if someone says something rude to you online to start a fight, you should just ignore it.
If you respond, you’re taking the bait.
Ah, I see.
So it’s all about keeping control of your emotions and not letting others pull you into unnecessary conflict.
Exactly. It’s a reminder to stay calm and not get manipulated.

Don’t take the bait. 不要被引誘上鉤, 不被別人操縱
現在的社會充滿了各式各樣的詐騙行為,經常跟你分享一個相關的用語,Don’t take the bait,就是釣魚的餌,Don’t take the bait 就是不要上鉤,不要被一些東西引誘,落入陷阱。
在日常生活中,如果有人可能會說一些話來引發你的情緒反應,讓你採取一些行動,這時你應該記住 Don’t take the bait。
If you respond to someone’s rude comment, you might be taking the bait.
如果你對某人無理的言論作出反應,你可能正落入陷阱。
Don’t take the bait 這個用語是個提醒,要保持冷靜,不被別人操縱。
這就是今天的 Info Cloud,我們下次雲端見。

Trolls on the internet:
Researchers from Cornell University suggest that both a person’s emotional state and the context of a conversation can cause them to act like a troll.
Anyone who wakes up on the wrong side of the bed or is having a bad day can lash out,
and if they receive a lot of likes for their comments, they’re likely to continue the behavior.
今天的 usage tip 是 anyone who 的用法。它的意思是任何怎樣的人。它可以替換成 whoever。
由於 anyone 為代名詞,所以替換成的 whoever 子句屬於名詞子句,在句子中可以作主詞或受詞用。
不過 whoever 也可以引導出副詞詞句,譬如 whoever you meet, you’ll learn something new from them。
此時 whoever 等於 no matter who,無論是誰的意思。
這時就不能替換成 anyone who。
我們來看一個例句:
The arrogant boy looks down on anyone who he considers inferior to him.
這個傲慢的男孩瞧不起他看為比他差的人。
All right, friends,
let’s continue learning with our article we read here.
Researchers from Cornell University
suggest that both a person’s emotional state
and the context of a conversation can
cause them to act like a troll, okay?
These are some
more reasons why people want to troll in the first place.
First, we are talking about their emotional state.
This is their strong feelings that they have,
especially because of a certain circumstance
or because of a relationship that they have.
Ooh, it’s a great question you can add to your
repertoire of questions, the questions you ask people:
"Hey, what was your emotional state like when that happened to you?"
It’s a great way to talk about your feelings in English.
Now, if they have an emotional state
that’s off or the context of a conversation is bad,
it can cause them to act like a troll.
There’s that word "context" now.
Context is a tricky
English word that means the circumstances
around an event,
so the things that are happening along with another action.
Okay,
here’s an example of how you can use context in a sentence:
He misunderstood what she meant because he had no context.
Context is so important in many situations in life, friends.
We read on here, starting with our usage tip for today:
Anyone who wakes up on the wrong side of the bed
or is having a bad day can lash out. Now,
this is a great phrase for you to know:
The wrong side of the bed. This means that you are waking up in the morning
and you’re in a bad mood the whole day.
I absolutely love this
saying; it’s hilarious to me.
So you could say, "Oh, I
woke up on the wrong
side of the bed this morning. I feel in such a bad mood."
"I hope you don’t wake up on the wrong side of
the bed,"
and even if you do, remember to be kind to others,
even if you yourself are in a
bad mood.
But we see something else here in this sentence
as well, friends,
and this is the idea of lashing out.
What does it mean if you lash out at someone? Ooh, if you
lash out at someone here,
it means to quickly or suddenly
angrily criticize someone.
The word "lash" comes from an old word for whipping people
with like a... you know what a whip is, right?
You hit someone quickly with it and
the verb "to lash" means to strike
suddenly or quickly. Usually, when people are lashing out,
it means that they have a lot of emotions building up
and finally
they act on their emotions without thinking. They
lash out very quickly.
So here’s an example of how you can use it in a sentence:
It’s important not to lash out at others
when you’re angry. Now,
we read on here, and if they receive a lot of
likes for their comments,
they’re likely to continue the behavior.
I have noticed this happens a lot,
John—someone will say something mean
and people think it’s funny,
and then people
like it, and it just encourages them to say more mean
things. Yeah, remember, if even one person
is offended by what
you’ve said, if you’re trying to hurt them,
then it’s not funny. Now,
friends, there’s another word we see here: behavior.
What is that? Okay, so behavior is the way in which you act,
especially towards others.
So a lot of times you’ll hear people talking
especially about
children’s behavior, the way they act
and the way they treat others, if they are polite or not.
Interesting! So you could say, "Wow,
her behavior was really strange
today. I wonder what her emotional state was like." Now, friends,
even if you’re having a bad day,
if you wake up on the wrong side of the bed,
remember it’s probably not a good time to start talking
online. Wait until you’ve calmed down.
Make sure that you can control your behavior
before you are lashing out at others.
We have more to learn,
and we’ll talk about this topic a little more
in just a moment,
right after today’s fun fact!
Ha! Hello, fact friends!
I am detective Ernest Finder
and I have a fun fact for you today about trolls.
Did you know there is a story about three goats
who try to cross a hungry troll’s bridge?
It’s true!
The story is sometimes called The Three Billy Goats Gruff.
In the story, the two
smaller goats tell the troll to wait
and eat their big brother,
but the biggest goat is strong and beats the troll.
It teaches us not to be greedy or a
troll, and that is today’s fun troll fact! Aha!
Well, friends, we’re almost at the end of our lesson
all about internet trolls,
but before we go,
we have a "Talk About It" question. Are you ready, John?
I am! Okay, here it is:
Have you ever had a troll harass you online? What did you do?
I’ve had this happen to me a lot, actually,
and I think the best advice
was to love your enemies and actually
pray for the people that
speak evil of you. So,
the best way to get over it and not be hurt
is just to love the people that treat you wrong.
I’ve had some trolls bother me online, not too much.
I have more of a problem with scam accounts
trying to send me weird information sometimes.
Think maybe we should have an article about that eventually,
too, because there are a lot of weird things that happen
online, friends. It’s really
important for you to stay safe and protect yourself.
Absolutely. Well, friends,
it’s very interesting to talk about trolls together.
Make sure you come back tomorrow.
That’s right, friends,
we have more to learn
about internet trolls and how to deal with them
in tomorrow’s lesson. Well,
that’s all the time we had for today.
My name is Anne Marie,
and my name is John, friends.
Thank you so much for joining us
today right here on
Studio Classroom.

ChatGPT翻譯
你好,朋友們,
我的名字是Anne Marie,
今天是學習新事物的好日子。
那麼,讓我們一起來學習吧,朋友們。
我的名字是John,
"Decrease"
John?
I've had my fair share of rain this season, and I'm ready to embrace the change in weather.
He engaged in illegal activities and was arrested by the police.
在這裡,他們參與了這些不良的網路活動,但我們現在要討論的是為什麼他們會這麼做。
有些人說,他們是想要製造惡作劇。
你學過如何製造惡作劇,但我們也會看到 bother 這個詞,就是煩擾他人。
Bother 意味著惹怒或使人不高興。有時候,我們甚至會說 "get on someone's nerves" 來表示惹某人不高興。
讓我們用這個詞造個句子。
這是一個例子,朋友們:
My cat likes to bother me while I’m trying to get work done.
"Don’t take the bait"?
Don’t take the bait,就是釣魚的餌,
Don’t take the bait 就是不要上鉤,不要被一些東西引誘,落入陷阱。
在日常生活中,如果有人可能會說一些話來引發你的情緒反應,讓你採取一些行動,
這時你應該記住 Don’t take the bait。
如果你對某人無理的言論作出反應,你可能正落入陷阱。
Don’t take the bait
譬如 whoever you meet,
you’ll learn something new from them。
此時 whoever 等於 no matter who,
無論是誰的意思。
這時就不能替換成 anyone who。
我們來看一個例句:
The arrogant boy looks down on anyone who
he considers inferior to him.
這個傲慢的男孩瞧不起他
認為比他差的人。
All right, friends,
He misunderstood what she meant because he had no context.
他誤解了她的意思,因為他沒有背景知識。
背景在很多生活情境中都很重要,朋友們。
我們繼續讀,從今天的 usage tip 開始:
Anyone who wakes up on the wrong side of the bed
or is having a bad day can lash out。現在,
這是一個你應該知道的好短語:
The wrong side of the bed。
Ernest Finder,
Anne Marie,
我是 John,朋友們。
非常感謝你們今天的參與,
就在這裡,Studio Classroom。

Hello friends,
My name is Anne Marie,
and today is a great day to learn something new.
So let’s do that together, friends.
My name is John,
and this is Studio Classroom.
You’re just in time for day two of our article called
"Trolls on the Internet." What did we talk about yesterday, John?
Well,
first of all, we learned that internet trolls are people who
deliberately or on purpose
make statements to provoke others.
They’re trying to get a reaction.
That’s right, we also learned that in 2021, forty
one percent of Americans said that they have been
harassed online.
We also learned about some of the reasons
people might become an internet troll.
What were some of those reasons, John?
Well,
sometimes, if people get a lot of likes for their behavior
or they just think they’re causing mischief,
they’re not doing a lot of trouble,
they might continue to do this trolling behavior.
But obviously,
it’s not okay.
Sometimes, it has to do with someone’s emotional state
or if they got up on the wrong side of the bed.
We’re going to talk about the
best way to deal with internet trolls
in today’s lesson.
So let’s get right into our first reading for the day.
Trolls on the Internet
Platforms that trolls target include chat rooms,
YouTube, forums,
or anywhere
people can freely post their thoughts and opinions.
So how do you know if you are a victim?
Typically, trolls attack something that you have said you
support or are in favor of.
They either insult you directly or criticize a post's topic,
and they don’t stop,
especially if they get an emotional reaction, as that is
what they are hoping for.
Hi, I’m Jack. 今天的usage tip是either
or的句型對等結構。
either A or B的意思是不是A就是B。
用於強調在A與B
兩者之間做一個選擇。
在此結構當中,
A與B必須為一致的詞性或是句式。
課文裡這句 "They either insult you
directly or criticize a post's topic" 中的 "insult"
和 "criticize" 都是動詞,
但A與B也可能同為名詞、
形容詞或介系詞,
或是從句等等。
來看例句:
She didn’t answer your call either because she was busy
or because she fell asleep.
她沒接你的電話不是因為她在忙,
就是因為她睡著了。
Okay, friends, are you ready to talk about some of the places
you might run into internet trolls?
Let’s find out.
We read here, "Platforms that trolls target include
chat rooms, YouTube, forums,
or anywhere
people can freely post their thoughts and opinions."
Let’s talk about a few of these first.
We see this word "chat rooms."
John, can you explain to us what that is?
Sure,
a chat room generally is a website where people can talk
in private or group conversations.
That’s right,
you should be really careful in chat rooms
because you never know who you’re really talking to. Make
sure that you protect yourself
and don’t give out any personal information.
We also see this word "forums," and this is an interesting one.
It means a meeting
where ideas and views on a particular issue
can be exchanged.
Now, a lot of forums are in person,
but an online
forum is a place
where people can exchange ideas about the same topic.
Yeah,
there are a lot of online forums on the internet.
Did you know "forum"
actually comes from an old Roman place
where the government would meet together and talk?
Very interesting!
So we see here: "How do you know
if you are a victim?"
"Victim" is a great word for you to know, friends.
Let’s talk about it. All right,
a victim is someone who has been hurt
by a crime or even a
negative behavior.
So here’s an example:
Grandma was a victim of credit card fraud.
Now, "victim" is really great to use with the word "of."
You can say the person’s name,
then the word "victim of,"
and then you can say
what happened to them that caused them to become a victim.
That’s right. Well,
we read on here, friends, together:
"Typically, trolls attack something that you have said you support
or are in favor of."
Okay,
so this is the way trolls typically work.
What does that word mean?
So "typically" is a really easy one, friends. It just means
usually. It is what typically happens.
So all we’re saying here is
that that’s what trolls usually do.
Okay,
so they typically attack something that you have said.
Now, remember, we learned what trolls are, right?
But just to review, a troll is someone
who intentionally says something to get a reaction, often
a negative or harassing
statement. Now, we also read:
"They either insult you
directly or criticize a post's
topic."
Interesting!
That’s right. Now that was your usage tip for today, friends,
so make sure you take a note of that.
We’re going to keep reading here. We see:
"And they don’t
stop." This is one way you know
you are a victim of trolling.
If the troll says one mean thing,
they get a reaction,
and then they just keep on harassing you,
especially if they get an emotional reaction.
Yesterday, we talked about someone’s emotional state,
but what do we mean
when we’re talking about emotional reactions?
Okay, well,
a reaction in general is a response to an action
or a response to something, right?
So an emotional reaction is the way you respond
emotionally to something. For example,
if you see something happy,
you might have a strong joyful emotional reaction.
Here’s another example:
What was her reaction when you told her
how you felt?
Reactions, of course,
can be positive or negative.
You could react well to good news,
and you could react poorly to bad news.
We read on here:
"If they get an emotional reaction,
that is what they are hoping for." That’s what
trolls want in the first place, for people
to have a negative reaction.
Now, this phrase "hoping for" is good for you to know
as well, friends.
It means to want something to happen
or hope that something comes true.
Yeah,
your hope is your expectation, right?
Hopefully, you have good hopes.
And it can be an adverb, hopefully,
or it can even be a verb, "I hoped,"
but normally we see this as a noun—
someone’s hope.
All right, friends, let’s continue learning about internet trolls
in the next part of our reading.
Trolls on the Internet
You can also spot a troll
because they make ridiculous statements about the topic
being discussed,
hoping to get a reaction.
They likely don’t believe what they’re saying,
but their goal is to get you to believe that they do
and react.
我們來看一下 "ridiculous" 這個形容詞。
它的意思是可笑的、荒謬的。
來看例句:
i must have looked ridiculous all day.
i had a leaf stuck in my hair and didn’t know it.
我一定一整天看起來很可笑,因為我頭髮上卡了一片葉子,卻沒有發現。
或者是:
the man’s claim that he could lift up a scooter seemed ridiculous, but he actually did it.
這名男子聲稱自己能舉起一台機車,聽起來很可笑,但他真的做到了。
他的副詞是 "ridiculously",意思是荒謬的、過分的。
比如:
baby shoes can be ridiculously expensive, and they really aren’t necessary if the child can’t walk yet.
嬰兒鞋可以貴得離譜,但如果孩子還不會走路,就真的沒有必要買。
Okay, friends, let’s continue talking about ways you can identify internet trolls and know if you are a victim of trolling.
We see here you can also spot a troll because they make ridiculous statements. Let’s stop there for just a moment.
You just saw that word "ridiculous" in your language lab, and we also see another word following it, the word "statements."
What do we mean by "statements"?
A statement generally is something that is said or even written as a fact. So they say something, and they pretend that they believe it’s true.
I like that you said "as a fact," because I think this is a little different than when we say someone said something. In English, we might say they made a statement.
This means that someone is saying it as if they believe it were true, as John said, and they usually feel more strongly about it.
Here’s an example of how you could use it in a sentence:
the government released several statements to the press after the disaster.
這是一個非常正式的說法,表示政府對這一情況的正式立場。
That’s a good point. You’ll see this as a noun a lot in official documents, like a response from the government, as you said.
And why do they do this? Well, maybe they’re hoping to get a reaction. That’s a good sentence pattern: "to get a reaction." We can review that one.
That’s right. We just talked about getting a reaction in the previous section, where we talked about reactions can be good or bad.
Of course, trolls are generally hoping to get a bad reaction.
Here’s an example:
the bully teased the other children just to get a reaction.
Yeah, we often use this when we’re talking about relationships between people.
You could say the comedian told a funny joke, hoping to get a reaction from the audience.
Now, you can also say you have a reaction.
Sometimes, you might say, "I had a bad reaction to that chemical; I had lots of allergies."
Yeah, this is a way that we talk about allergic reactions oftentimes.
If you start using a different type of soap, for example, and you get a rash on your skin, you can say, "I had a bad reaction to that soap."
Now, this is a really interesting next part here, friends, because we find out that trolls likely don’t believe what they are saying.
So they’re making these statements as if they are true, as if they stand behind them, but in reality, do they really think that way?
Yeah, you know, a lot of times people are trying to be funny, so it’s important to be forgiving to people online sometimes.
Trolls don’t know that they’re saying something really rude. They think they’re being funny, but as we read, they likely don’t believe what they’re saying.
If you believe what you are saying, it means you’re convinced of the truth of your own words.
For example, I don’t believe what he is saying about what happened that night means you think he is lying.
Now we see here a little bit more about trolls' motivations.
Their goal is to get you to believe that they do believe what they’re saying and react.
Interesting. So oftentimes people will enter into political debates or something like that, and they’ll say something really strong just trying to annoy or offend others.
That’s being a real troll. You definitely don’t want to do that, but I’m sure we’ve all seen it a little bit sadly now.
Let’s review some of the English we’ve learned on this journey with today’s Info Cloud:
Hello friends, welcome to Info Cloud.
Hey, Garrett, this morning’s meeting was very stressful.
I thought you were going to say something.
Hey, Rex, everyone was arguing, so I didn’t want to add fuel to the fire.
Hey, I’ve heard that expression before. What does it mean exactly?
Well, when someone says you’re adding fuel to the fire, it means you’re making a bad situation even worse.
It sounds like a literal description. If there’s a fire and you throw more fuel on it, it gets bigger and harder to control.
Exactly! If two people are arguing and someone else makes a harsh comment, they’re adding fuel to the fire. They’re making the argument worse.
So the phrase is used for conflicts, yes, but the phrase can apply to anything that makes a bad situation more difficult, like spreading gossip, making accusations, or even offering bad advice in a tense moment.
Oh, I see! So it’s a phrase that reminds us to be careful about what we say or do in intense or difficult situations.
That’s right! In difficult situations, it’s always a good idea to make things better instead of worse.

add fuel to the fire

Trolls on the internet
So what should you do?
Most experts say to ignore them.
Don’t get involved in an online discussion with one, because that is exactly what they want.
If the troll becomes offensive, you can use the site's "contact us" link or report button to report their behavior to the administrator.
Don’t let trolls have the last word.
接下來看 offensive 這個字。
它可以當形容詞或名詞使用。
當形容詞的意思是冒犯的或令人作嘔的。
來看例句:
Bob made a very offensive comment to the waitress, so the restaurant manager politely asked him to leave.
Bob 對女服務員說了一句非常不禮貌的話,於是餐廳經理客氣地請他離開。
With a ship, despite the offensive smell coming from it, the garbage truck fascinated the little boy.
儘管垃圾車散發著難聞的氣味,但還是讓小男孩很著迷。
Offensive 當名詞則是進攻或攻擊的意思。
譬如:
Our soccer team has a great offensive this year, and our coach says we can break records for scoring.
我們的足球隊今年的進攻能力很強,教練說我們可以打破得分紀錄。
Thank you, Jack.
Friends, we have one more section to look at in this article, and we have an important question.
So what should you do?
We know all this information about trolls. We know now why they are doing it and how they are doing it, so what do we do? How does our article continue, John?
Well, we hear that most experts say ignore them.
If you’re ignoring, it means you’re not giving attention, right?
That’s right. It means to refuse to take notice of something or to completely disregard.
I see, so you know it’s happening, but you choose not to regard it or act on it.
Again, trolls are trying to get a reaction, so if they don’t get a reaction from you, they might move away.
We also read don’t get involved in an online discussion with one, meaning one troll.
That’s right, because that is exactly what they want.
What do we mean when we use the word exactly, John?
Exactly means the thing that you’ve just mentioned is accurate or right on.
Let’s use that in a sentence:
Thanks for the gift. It’s exactly what I wanted.
Oh, okay!
You could also say it’s exactly two o’clock.
That means we’re talking about two o’clock, and the time is not 2:01. It’s not 1:59. It’s 2 o’clock exactly.
Sometimes we use a phrase right on the nose, meaning like directly on something.
That’s a fun English idiom for exactly.
Okay, we see here, if the troll becomes offensive, you can use the site's contact us link or report button.
Let’s stop there for a minute and talk about a few of these things.
First of all, we have this word link.
This is one you need to know when we’re talking about websites. This is talking about a hyperlink.
This is something you can click on, and it takes you to another location.
Interesting, a link could be a verb meaning connecting two things, and that’s where we get this noun.
You could say, don’t click on that link; you don’t know if it’s a scam.
Now, friends, you click on a link here to report trolls.
There’s a verb report, meaning to send word of something. But when we’re using it here, talking about reporting someone online, it means to tell the website’s moderators about negative online actions.
Here’s an example of how we can use report in a sentence:
If this behavior continues, we’ll have to report it to the boys' errands. They’ll need to know about it.
Now, what are we reporting or how are we reporting it? Well, we’re reporting this behavior to the administrator.
When we talk about administrator in this context, we’re talking about the person who is managing that platform or managing a website.
That’s right. You know, the internet has really changed English, so a lot of the time when we’re talking about an online administrator, people will just say the admin or the admins.
Now, it might not be proper English, but that is the way it will get used when you see it, so you might report someone to the admins.
Let’s see that online.
That’s a good point!
We see one more thing here:
Don’t let trolls have the last word. What does it mean if someone has the last word?
If you have the last word, you literally speak last, but it means you get to give your opinion last, or as we sometimes say, to have the final say.
Well, that’s the last word here. Now it’s time for today’s fun fact.
Hello, Fact Friends!
I am Detective Ernest Finder, and I have a fun fact for you today.
Did you know there are many memes to represent online trolls?
Sometimes these memes are drawings.
You know what a meme is, don’t you? It’s the little picture with words on it.
One famous meme is a mysterious green frog named Pepe.
He’s not very well drawn, but he’s kind of funny, and that is today’s fun troll fact.
Alright, friends, as we end our lesson, we have a Talk About It question for you:
Why do people become online trolls?
Wow, that’s a good question.
Well, I think most people don’t wake up in the morning saying, "Mom, I’m gonna be a troll today."
But there’s a famous phrase: be careful because bad company corrupts good character.
You know, we all like to get likes, and sometimes, when bad behavior is encouraged by your friends, you end up a troll.
I think a lot of trolls just want attention, or their own emotional state is not correct.
We have to be careful about what we say to people in person and online.
Well, friends, that’s all the time we have for today.
My name is Anne Marie.
And my name is John.
Friends, thank you so much for talking about trolls online with us today.
We’ll see you next time right here on Studio Classroom.
翻譯為繁體中文
Hello friends,
我的名字是 Anne Marie,
今天是學習新事物的好日子。
讓我們一起來學習吧,朋友們。
我的名字是 John,
這是 Studio Classroom。
你們正好趕上我們的第二天文章,
《網路上的巨魔》。昨天我們講了些什麼,John?
嗯,
首先我們學到了網路巨魔是那些故意或刻意
發表挑釁他人的言論的人。
他們是試圖引起反應。
沒錯,我們還學到在 2021 年,四十一%
的美國人表示他們曾在網路上遭遇騷擾。
我們也了解了一些人可能會成為網路巨魔的原因。
John,
either A or B 的意思是不是 A 就是 B,
用來強調在 A 和 B
兩者之間做選擇。
在這個結構中,
A 和 B 必須在詞性或句式上保持一致。
課文裡這句 "They either insult you
directly or criticize a post's topic" 中的 "insult"
和 "criticize" 都是動詞,
但 A 和 B 也可以是名詞、形容詞、介系詞,
或者是從句等等。
來看例句:
She didn’t answer your call either because she was busy
or because she fell asleep.
她沒接你的電話不是因為她在忙,
就是因為她睡著了。
好了,朋友們,準備好來談談你可能會遇到網路巨魔的地方嗎?
我們來看看。
我們在這裡讀到,"巨魔攻擊的平台包括
聊天室、YouTube、論壇,
或者任何
人們可以自由發表想法和意見的地方。"
我們來先談談其中幾個。
我們看到這個詞 "聊天室"。
John,
Grandma was a victim of credit card fraud.
奶奶成為了信用卡詐騙的受害者。
"受害者"這個詞很適合搭配 "of" 來使用。
你可以說這個人的名字,
然後加上 "victim of",
再說明
發生了什麼事讓他們變成了受害者。
沒錯。那麼,
我們在這裡繼續讀到:
"通常,巨魔會攻擊你所說的支持
或贊同的事物。"
好的,
這是巨魔的典型行為。
那麼,這個詞 "typically" 是什麼意思呢?
"Typically" 是一個很簡單的詞,朋友們,它的意思是
通常,指的是通常會發生的情況。
所以我們在這裡說的是
巨魔通常會做這些事情。
所以他們通常會攻擊你所說的事。
現在記得我們已經學過什麼是巨魔對吧?
但讓我們再複習一下,巨魔是指
故意發表一些語言來引起反應的人,通常是
負面或騷擾性的言論。
我們還讀到:
"They either insult you
directly or criticize a post's
topic."
有趣!
沒錯,這就是今天的用法小提示,朋友們,
一定要記下來。
我們繼續閱讀,這裡寫著:
"And they don’t
stop."
What was her reaction when you told her
how you felt?
當你告訴她你的感受時,她的反應是什麼?
反應當然可以是正面或負面。
你可以對好消息做出良好的反應,
也可以對壞消息做出不好的反應。
接下來我們讀到:
"If they get an emotional reaction,
that is what they are hoping for." 這就是
巨魔最初想要的,讓人們
做出負面的反應。
現在這個片語 "hoping for" 也很適合你們知道,
它表示想要某件事發生,
或者希望某件事成真。
對,
你的希望是你的期望,對吧?
希望你有好的希望。
它既可以是副詞 "hopefully",
也可以是動詞 "I hoped",
I must have looked ridiculous all day.
I had a leaf stuck in my hair and didn’t know it.
我一定一整天看起來很可笑,因為我頭髮上卡了一片葉子,卻沒有發現。
或者是:
The man’s claim that he could lift up a scooter seemed ridiculous, but he actually did it.
這名男子聲稱自己能舉起一台機車,聽起來很可笑,但他真的做到了。
他的副詞是 "ridiculously",意思是荒謬的、過分的。
比如:
Baby shoes can be ridiculously expensive, and they really aren’t necessary if the child can’t walk yet.
The government released several statements to the press after the disaster.
政府在災難發生後,向媒體發佈了幾份聲明。
這是一個非常正式的說法,表示政府對此情況的正式立場。
你說得對。你會在正式文件中看到這個名詞,像是政府的回應。
那麼他們為什麼要這麼做呢?也許他們希望能引起反應。
這是一個很好的句型:「to get a reaction」(引起反應)。我們可以回顧一下。
沒錯。我們在上一段談到過反應可能是正面的或負面的。
當然,網路巨魔通常希望引起負面的反應。
這裡有一個例子:
The bully teased the other children just to get a reaction.
Hello friends, welcome to Info Cloud.
Hey, Garrett, this morning’s meeting was very stressful.
我以為你會說點什麼。
Hey, Rex, everyone was arguing, so I didn’t want to add fuel to the fire.
嘿,我聽過這個表達,究竟它的意思是什麼呢?
Well, when someone says you’re adding fuel to the fire, it means you’re making a bad situation even worse.
當有人說你是在火上浇油時,意思就是你讓一個糟糕的情況變得更糟。
It sounds like a literal description. If there’s a fire and you throw more fuel on it, it gets bigger and harder to control.
聽起來像是字面上的描述。如果有一場火災,你再往裡面加燃料,火會變得更大,控制起來也更難。
Exactly! If two people are arguing and someone else makes a harsh comment, they’re adding fuel to the fire. They’re making the argument worse.
沒錯!如果兩個人在爭論,然後另外一個人說了刻薄的話,那就是在火上浇油,他們讓爭吵變得更糟。
So the phrase is used for conflicts, yes, but the phrase can apply to anything that makes a bad situation more difficult, like spreading gossip, making accusations, or even offering bad advice in a tense moment.
所以這個表達的確是用於衝突中,但它也可以用來描述任何讓情況變得更糟的事物,比如散布謠言、指責他人,甚至在緊張的時刻給出壞建議。
Oh, I see! So it’s a phrase that reminds us to be careful about what we say or do in intense or difficult situations.
哦,我明白了!所以這是提醒我們在緊張或困難的情況下,要小心我們所說的話或做的事。
That’s right! In difficult situations, it’s always a good idea to make things better instead of worse.
With a ship, despite the offensive smell coming from it, the garbage truck fascinated the little boy.
