Gashapon（ガシャポン），也稱為gachapon（ガチャポン） ，是由萬代公司生產和銷售的一種自動販賣機分配的膠囊玩具。它起源於20世紀60年代，在日本很流行。

Have you ever used a gashapon machine? Wow, wow, wow, okay. We’ll talk about what a gashapon is in a moment, but yes, I have. From the gashapon machine, I bought a little man made out of sushi. Oh, yeah. My kids love those gashapon machines, and you can find some really unique toys inside of them. This is what we’re talking about today, friends. If you have used a gashapon machine, you can talk about that in English. Let’s get going with our first reading for the day: 
Gachapon: The Simple Joy of Japan’s Capsule Toys and Machines.
You place your money into the machine and turn the dial—gasha, pawn! You hear a plastic capsule fall into the tray below. Open it up. What could it be? It’s always a surprise. Gashapon are capsule toys that come out of gashapon vending machines and are all the rage in Japan.

All right, friends, are you ready to talk about gashapon? Well, first, before we do, let’s get a definition of what it actually is, okay? A gashapon toy is a small plastic toy bought unknowingly from a vending machine. By the way, gashapon is actually the official name of a kind of toy by the brand Bandai. So it’s come to be a word that is used for that kind of toy you get in a capsule. That’s right. And that is the idea with gashapon—you don’t know exactly what toy you’re getting. These egg-shaped containers, called capsules, fall out when you put money in. Now, a capsule is a small case or a container, but it’s especially a round one. That’s right. There’s a word in there—cap. Cap—a cap is the lid to something, so normally, a capsule can be opened to store things. You could say, “I put my memories in a time capsule and buried them under the ground.” These capsules are a lot of fun, though, and we read about the process of getting a gashapon.

That’s right. Here’s how it goes: You place your money into the machine and turn the dial. You see that word, "dial," there. What does that mean, John? A dial is usually a round spinning kind of handle. There are dials on a lot of different machines, and here you put your money in, and you turn the dial. Then what happens? Okay, gasha, pawn! Oh, gasha, pawn! This is the sound that it makes. Oh, I see. Okay, gasha is the sound of the plastic capsule falling into the tray below. What’s a tray, by the way? A tray is a flat, shallow container with a raised rim. Now, usually, people use trays to carry food, like in a restaurant. But sometimes you use a tray to store things as well, like art supplies. That’s right. We keep our silverware in a tray in a drawer. Sometimes my mom makes us a tray of cookies—yum! But these gashapon toys need to be opened. We read: "Open it up. What could it be? It’s always a surprise." I think this is the best part—I like the surprise. Some people don’t like that you don’t exactly know what you’re buying, but for me, that is the fun part. We read on here: "Gashapon are capsule toys that come out of gashapon vending machines and are all the rage in Japan." There are a few things we can look at in this last sentence. First of all, vending machines. I’m sure you’ve seen those before, yes? You know what it is? It’s a machine that takes your money and sells you something. The word vend, or a vendor, is someone who sells things. So these vending machines are all the rage. Rage means anger usually, but not here. That’s right, rage can mean anger, but here we’re talking about something that is very, very popular at a particular time. So you could say bell-bottom jeans were all the rage in the 70s. You know what? I hope my little sushi man that I bought is all the rage, because it was a total surprise when I got that from the gashapon machine. But they are a lot of fun. I think it’s time to keep reading about why these machines are all the rage.

Gashapon. The name gashapon comes from the sound of the dial turning—gasha—and the "pawn" of the toy dropping. Gashapon can be found all over Japan, in shopping areas like Akihabara and Ikebukuro, which boast thousands of these machines. Each machine displays a poster showing the available capsule toys. Anime-themed toys are among the most popular prizes, but gashapon aren’t just for anime fans—they have something for everyone. 

我們來看poster這個名詞，意思呢是海報。譬如：everyone in their teenage son’s bedroom was covered with posters of his favorite bands。每一面牆上都貼滿了他最喜歡的樂團海報。
poster也是指張貼者或是發布者。譬如：when Jess saw an ad posted online about the apartment for rent, she immediately messaged the poster to set up a viewing。
當Jess在網路上看到一則有關公寓出租的廣告時，他立即聯繫了發布者，安排看房時間。
post也可以當動詞，意思是張貼或是發布。例如：I have committed to post photos of my products on Instagram every day this year to see if it increases my sales。我決定今年每天都在Instagram上發布我的產品照片，看看是否能增加銷售量。

Okay, thank you so much, Jack. We read here: "The name gashapon comes from the sound of the dial turning—that is the sound—gasha—and the pawn of the toy dropping." So there are two sounds here—gasha and then pawn. Gasha, pawn. Okay, that’s kind of easy to remember. And you definitely—there’s this moment of excitement when that pawn sound happens. We read that gashapon can be found all over Japan, and actually in a lot of other parts of the world now too. But where are they found? They can be found all over in shopping areas, like Akihabara and Ikebukuro, which boast thousands of these machines. Now, I have seen these around in our city before, John, but I don’t know if I’ve ever seen thousands in one city. There are stores that have so many of these gashapon machines, and again, you’ll find them in these places called shopping areas. There are lots of different ways to describe a shopping area, like a night market, a market. Sometimes we say mall—M-A-L-L. But a shopping area will often have many of these, not just in the shops, but outside the shops. Yeah, that’s a really good point. But we read on here: "Each machine displays a poster showing the available capsule toys." Now, this is the fun part for me, because you see usually some type of diagram or picture of what you could possibly get, and you know it’s going to be one of those things. That’s right. So you can choose what kind of toy it is, but you can’t choose the exact toy, right? We read that anime-themed toys are among the most popular prizes. Anime comes from the word in English, animation, which means drawn art in movies. But anime is a specific thing. That’s right.

The Definition of Anime
So, the definition of anime is a style of Japanese film and television animation.
It’s typically aimed at adults as well as children.

Usually, when we talk about cartoons, they are mainly targeted at children.
But anime is a little different in this sense.

Definitely! So be very careful about what kind of anime you’re watching!

Anime-Themed Gashapon Toys
Anime-themed toys are among the most popular prizes.

Here’s the word prize, which we don’t usually use for toys.
But because you don’t know what you’re getting, the Gashapon toy feels like a prize!

We also read that Gashapon toys are not just for anime fans.

That’s right! We read:
"But Gashapon aren’t just for anime fans. They have something for everyone."

Now, we know this word fan—let’s review it together.

That’s right! A fan is a person who supports or follows another person,
or sometimes even a trend, like Gashapon!

Are you a fan of anything?

I also like the phrase at the end of this sentence:
"They have something for everyone."

If there is something for everyone, it means that everyone can find something they like or need in a certain place.

For example, you could say:
"There’s something for everyone at the convenience store."

That’s right! One of the fun things about Gashapon toys is that they’re often super cute,
so they’re fun for kids as well as adults.

We have a special name for sound words in English. We call them onomatopoeia.
Whoa! That was a big word!
We see onomatopoeia a lot in poetry and also when talking about things like animal sounds.
True! Animal sounds have different spellings in different languages.
In English, dogs say woof, while in Chinese, they say 汪汪 (wāng wāng).
Let’s talk about some common sound words.
Most of them have both a verb and a noun form.
For example, the words beep and honk.
These could describe the sound a car horn makes.
You could say: "I heard a loud beep." (Here, "beep" is a noun.)
Or you could say: "The driver honked his horn impatiently." (Here, "honked" is a verb.)
You can use either beep or honk in both of these sentences.
Another word that comes to mind describes a cooking sound—sizzle.
It’s the sound of something cooking in oil.
Let’s try using sizzle in two ways in one sentence:
"I heard a sizzle and smelled bacon, and sure enough, there was bacon sizzling in the pan."
I can almost smell that sentence! Mmm… yummy!
Sound words make your sentences more interesting and descriptive. Try using some today!

擬聲詞（Onomatopoeia）
今天要跟大家分享生活中經常聽到的各種聲音，所衍生出來的英文單字，也就是 Onomatopoeia（擬聲詞或狀聲詞）。
打噴嚏的聲音該怎麼拼呢？
「打噴嚏」這個動詞是 sneeze，而打噴嚏的聲音則是 achoo (A-C-H-O-O)，也就是「阿秋」！
還有很多動物的聲音也可以用 onomatopoeia 來表達。

Let’s Look at the Word "Breed"
我們來看 breed 這個名詞，意思是「品種」。

"The Spanish Mustang is a breed of free-roaming horse found in the western United States,
known for its small, strong build and ability to survive harsh environments."
