hello there and welcome to studio classroom
we’re having a great time and you’re going to as well
my name is Gabe and i’m Anne Marie
thanks for joining us friends
because today as usual is a great day to learn something new
so let’s do that together
we are going to learn something new about a celebrity now
before we get into our lesson
i have a question for you who is an actress that you like
and why it could be someone
that you enjoy for their character or for their performances
that they’ve played on screen or on stage
hmm well
this is a really interesting question
i don’t always watch that many movies these days
but i did see the barbie movie last year
and there were a lot of performances in that movie
that i really enjoyed
you know what
there are a lot of really great actresses out there
one of my favorites is meryl streep
and i was pleasantly surprised to see that
she is a big part of the third season of only murders
in the building
which is a funny tv series on Disney plus
but Jessica chastain
is another great actress that have started to follow recently
friends what about you
who is one of your favorite actresses
and why today we are going to be talking about
remarkable Rebecca Ferguson
let’s get right into it
remarkable Rebecca Ferguson
her road to becoming an international star
Rebecca Ferguson has been
the toast of the town as a singer
she has also vied for the British throne
and helped save the world as a spy on the big screen that is
hi everyone welcome to language lab i’m Jack
譬如those two companies constantly VI for the top position
in the market
each trying to outperform the other
或是in the world of Sports
the world’s greatest athletes
Vive for the gold medal at the Olympic Games
political candidates often
Vive for the support of undecided voters during elections
thank you so much Jack right away in our title
we see a remarkable word it’s the word remarkable
which i always think of as a synonym to the word amazing
or great and there are many synonyms that could go with amazing
like fascinating
interesting here we see the word remarkable
and you see the root there is the word remark
what does it mean to remark about something
it means that you have something to
say about it or it is worth talking about
so you could think of this
as saying Rebecca Ferguson is worth talking about
she has done some incredible things and perhaps the reason our
writer chose to use the word remarkable
is because it starts with the same letter as her first name
we call that alliteration okay
when you’re using this kind of writing style
when two things kind of sound similar
so rebeccable rebeccable remarkable
Rebecca Ferguson her road to becoming an international star this
rebeccable person
okay
what about someone’s road to something
yeah if you have the road to something
it means the path that you took to get there
but this doesn’t always mean a physical path
this can be an invisible path
like a career path
that you are taking to get to a certain destination
so the road to go somewhere yeah
we talk about people’s road to success if there’s a celebrity
or someone who’s been very successful
you want to learn about their journey
you’re learning about their road to riches for example
Rebecca Ferguson has been the toast of the town as a singer
that’s an interesting phrase
if someone is the toast of the town
that means they are the most popular person of a certain area
at least for a period of time
but that word toast we can use in different ways right
like what does it mean if i’m toasting someone at a wedding well
if you’re toasting someone
it means you’re usually
giving a speech each in their honor usually
there are drinks involved
and everybody raises a glass
or holds up their drink to honor the person
you’re toasting
yeah we might even say raise a toast to this person
it’s not a piece of toast
but that’s a completely different meaning right
so she has been the toast of the town as a singer
she has also vied for the British throne
that means tried to have a place in that area the British throne
a place of authority
and helped save the world as a spy on the big screen
that is so all of these things
we’ve been talking about describe Rebecca Ferguson
these all happened on the big screen
but what does that mean
well it means that she is an actor
she is in movies
these things aren’t actually happening in real life
these of course
are roles that she has had has an actor
and we see the phrase there
that is at the end of this sentence
it’s kind of a way of saying well
the writer has maybe tried to trick us a little bit by thinking
this person has actually done all these things but at the end
we’re clarifying on the big screen
that is that’s where it actually happened
that’s right in that way and the way
we inflect those words that is it’s just like that
it’s not that is or that is
it’s just that is okay
we could even replace it
and put it at the beginning of that phrase
you could say that is on the big screen and of course
the big
screen is always referring to a movie in a movie theater
the movie theater screen is the big screen contrast to the ones
you probably have in your house well
let’s continue on right now
remarkable Rebecca Ferguson
born in 1983 in Sweden
Rebecca attended an English speaking school
so she speaks both English and Swedish fluently
her parents encouraged her to try things
in search of her passion
when she was 15 years old
her mother wanted her to try modeling
but she was too short only about 165 centimeters
so she was put in the agency’s people category soap operas
often look in that category for actresses
and that’s where they found Rebecca
例如after years of practice
Abigail spoke Italian
fluently engaging in conversations with native speakers
Abigail
Jacob delivered his speech fluently
and his entire presentation went smoothly
Jacob
the young pianist played the complex piece fluently
showing his remarkable musical talent
Georgia’s passion for painting was evident in every picture
或是teaching isn’t just a job for Zoe
it’s a true passion that drives her to inspire
and educate young minds教学对Zoe来说
the passionate performance of the orchestra
moved the audience to tears
thank you so much Jack well
we read on here born in 1983 hey
she’s my age okay
great good job Rebecca we’re the same age born in 1983 in Sweden
Rebecca attended an English speaking school
so she speaks both English and Swedish fluently
so that’s another thing we have in common
we’re both bilingual
you speak Swedish fluently Chinese oh that’s right
yes
so yeah she attended an English speaking school
sometimes we also talk about going to school
we use the words going to to talk about school right
so she went to an English speaking school
or attended an English speaking school
how does our lesson continue
well we read on here
her parents encouraged her to try things
in search of her passion
all right well
if her parents are encouraging her to try things
this is the idea that
her parents want her to try different things
or try different activities try
different hobbies try
or learn different skills try
everything remember that movie i think it was zootopia
wasn’t there a song in that movie
i think i do remember that song
basically try everything yeah
and why is she doing this
this is in search of her passion
so her parents want her to find what
she is passionate about find out what
she likes doing that’s what
we mean when we say in search of something
she’s looking for her passion
and that reminds me of another Disney movie finding Nemo where
of course Nemo’s father went in search of his
son Nemo in the deep blue sea
think of another way to use that phrase
what are you in search of friends
so
she was going to try different things in search of her passion
when she was 15 years old
her mother wanted her to try modeling and earlier this month
we talked about role model
that is someone that you look up to whose character
you admire in some way
you want to be like them in some way
but that’s different from the type of modeling
rebecca’s mom was talking about
that’s right the kind of modeling
we’re talking about here
is to wear clothing
or shoes to advertise the different products
and it turns out she was too short to do that
she was only 165 centimeters
so she was put in the agency’s people category what does that
even mean she’s put in the agency’s people category well
let’s talk about that phrase to be put in some kind of category
because maybe everything is all together
in one group at the beginning
but you’re trying to figure out a way
to put things into different groups
or categories
and so she’s put into this particular category we don’t know
exactly what the people category means from our lesson
but we read here
soap operas often look in that category for actresses
and that’s where they found Rebecca now
let’s talk about soap operas do you like soap operas Amory
i don’t really like watching soap operas
when i think of soap operas
i think of a story that is very very long and drawn out
it’s very very dramatic lots of people die
lots of people get married divorced
have lots of kids
the kids have all kinds of problems it’s just very dramatic
what about a sitcom
do you enjoy watching sitcoms
i love sitcoms they’re super funny
they are super funny
sitcom is short forced situation comedy
and really
the only big difference between a soap opera and a sitcom is
because they’re both on tv and on radio
and they’re a series
it’s the story where you can see the same characters
and the daily lives of these characters
but soap operas are usually dramatic or melodramatic
and kind of serious
and sitcoms are created to be funny oh
well
that makes sense no wonder i like watching sitcoms more well
we’ll be right back after today’s infocloud
hello everyone
and welcome to info cloud where we explore language together
Garrett i hear
you’re still volunteering at the animal shelter
you’ve been doing that for years
you must really love dogs yeah
i do volunteer there every weekend
but i don’t really like dogs that much
what you always seem
so passionate about animal rights
i am passionate about animal rights
i just don’t like dogs very much
how can you be passionate about something
you don’t really like well
Rex being passionate means having strong feelings
and caring deeply about something
but it isn’t necessarily about liking it
you can have all kinds of strong feelings
both positive and negative that makes sense
my uncle is very passionate about politics
but it also makes him very angry hmm
that’s a great example
people can be passionate about things they love like hobbies
or things they believe
need to change
like social issues for instance
i feel a lot of passion for singing and music i love them
so i’m passionate in a positive way
but i also feel passionate about the problem of air pollution
i think it’s terrible
that’s a passionate feeling in a negative way
exactly being passionate
just means you really really care about something
例如i’m passionate about singing and music
INFO cloud

remarkable Rebecca Ferguson
she landed her first role
as the lead character in the series niatidar
in spite of her success
the young actress wasn’t absolutely sure if acting was her path
but as soon
as the opportunity came to try out for the white queen
a tv mini series she took it after fighting hard to get a role
Rebecca won her inspired portrayal
earned her a nomination for a golden globe
and the attention of Tom Cruise
it’s absolutely essential to follow safety guidelines
when working on a boat
或是the view of the wilderness from the mountaintop
was absolutely breathtaking
the decision to promote Jennifer to manager
was an absolute surprise even to her
thanks Jack so we’re reading about how
Rebecca Ferguson landed a role in this series here
we see is niatti dur she landed her first role
as the lead character in this
series there are different characters in a movie right
there’s the lead character that’s the main person
the main role and someone who is kind of right there
next to that person is a supporting role or supporting character
and when it comes to the actor
we can also use these words the lead actor or supporting actor
that’s right now in this next sentence
we see something
that we’ve already talked about a little bit today remember
we talked about the road to becoming an international star here
in this next sentence
we see the phrase her path in spite of her success
the young actress wasn’t absolutely sure
if acting was her path now
in this situation
the road to doing something and your path
that you’re going down mean about the same thing that’s right
and at the beginning of this sentence
you see those words in spite of it’s completely
the same meaning as the single word despite okay
so we could say despite her success
and then
we see the rest or in spite of her success but remember
if you just use the word despite
don’t add the word of it’s not despite of it’s
in spite of we read on here
as soon as the opportunity came to try out for the white queen
a tv mini series she took it in other words
she took that opportunity
that’s how we often talk about opportunities
you can take an opportunity or you can
refuse an opportunity
and we see here that she had to fight hard to get a role now
this of course
doesn’t mean that she was actually fighting
someone physically fighting them to get the role
it probably meant that she tried really hard she did her best
maybe she did some type of training
and she probably had to go to a lot of different auditions
or some type of tryouts in order to land this role
and i imagine there was a lot of competition for this role
she had to fight hard to get it
a lot of other ladies wanted this role
as well and reminds me of that phrase
we talked about a few months ago to have a fighting chance
there is a chance to do something
or that something will happen
but you’re going to have to fight to get it
so after fighting hard to get a role
Rebecca won her inspired portrayal earned her a nomination
for a golden globe we could also say that
she earned a nomination
but we see here
her inspired portrayal earned her a nomination
let’s talk about that word nomination here
this is officially suggesting somebody for a prize
a job a position
or something like that now what do we call the person
who has been nominated for something now
that would be the nominee and in both cases here
it doesn’t mean that you actually won the award or got the job
but it means that you are in the position to possibly win
or possibly get the job
we also see here the golden globes and in case
you’re curious about the difference between the golden globes
and the Oscars
i’m sure there are a lot of differences
but one main difference is that the golden gloves is
it focuses on both tv and film
whereas the Oscars mainly just focuses on film
okay we also see here that she got the attention of Tom Cruise
that’s where our lesson ends off
today we’re going to pick up right there with Tom Cruise
at the beginning of the next part of our lesson
we’ll be right back after today’s fun fact
hello fact
friends i’m detective
Ernest finder and i have a very fun
Rebecca Ferguson fact for you
today did you know
that Rebecca Ferguson was in 54 episodes of a show
called nea tider or something like that
which was a love story
it’s true
she is a very good actress and works very hard this show
it was a Swedish show
and she was the main character fifty four episodes wow
and that is today’s Rebecca Ferguson fact
thank you Ernest finder and friends
it is time for a little quiz i hope you’re ready okay
fill in the blank
that amazing singer is the blank of the town by the way
close that magazine okay
no cheating
what do you remember that amazing singer is the toast of the
town the throne of the town
the spy of the town
or the soap of the town i remember we talked about this
like giving a toast or raising your glass to someone
the answer is toast of the town that’s right
and of course
we learned that Rebecca Ferguson has been the toast of the town
as a singer at least on the big screen
we have more to learn about this amazing
this remarkable actress next time
right here on studio classrooms
so proud to have you in my life

hi there and welcome to studio classroom
we’re very happy that you are joining us here today
my name is Gabe
and i’m Anne Marie we’re glad you’re here friends
because today as usual is a great day to learn something new
so let’s do that together we are talking about someone
rebeccable
well someone who is very remarkable
i confused that word with her name Rebecca right
so remarkable
Rebecca Ferguson what is something
we learned about this
actress yesterday well
we are talking all about her road
to becoming an international star
so we are learning about her background story
and how she got these big rolls
she originally was going to try modeling
because her mother wanted her too
but she was too short
and it turns out a soap opera picked her up instead
that’s right she lended her first role in this series nea tider
and she made a lot of progress and
actually her inspired portrayal
earned her a nomination for a golden globe
because of her part in a tv miniseries
called the white queen
but it didn’t just earn her a golden globe nomination
it earned her the attention of Tom Cruise
as well
and that’s where we’re going to pick up with our lesson today
with Tom Cruise
how let’s find out
remarkable Rebecca Ferguson
Tom Cruise offered her a role
in 2015 mission impossible rogue nation
but first
Ferguson had to prove she could perform her own stunts she did
which she attributes to her early training in dance
despite that she still spent five hours a day for six weeks
training for the film
hi everyone welcome to language lab
例如the stunt in the action film was so thrilling
that it won an award
或是performing stunts in Hollywood Movies
requires a lot of training在好莱坞电影中
Liz tried to stunt
her fear as she prepared to step out on stage
and give her first public speech
thank you very much Jack and in that language lab
you saw that someone’s fear can be stunted
i also kind of that made me
think of the idea of stunting someone’s growth
yet when you were younger
and Marie did did anybody ever tell you
that coffee will stunt your growth
yeah i definitely heard that a lot growing off
that coffee would stunt my growth
it would keep me from growing taller
but i will say that my brother liked to drink coffee
even when he was in junior high school and he’s 6 foot 4 so
i don’t know if that’s true
it certainly didn’t stunt his growth
it did not stunt his growth at all well
anyway friends
you see that this word can be used in different ways
and of course
in our lesson
we’re learning how she performs her own stunts
but let’s go back to the beginning of this section here
Tom Cruise offered her a role
in 2015’s mission impossible rogue nation
have you been following the mission impossible movies Ann Marie
i haven’t recently
but i’m pretty sure i saw this one i did enjoy the first few
there are so many mission impossible movies
it’s kind of like James bond
i mean just one movie after another
so this one was called rogue nation
that’s an interesting word right
it’s kind of like the word tongue you see that ue on the end
but we don’t pronounce that ue in any way right
it’s just rog that’s kind of where it seems like it stops
but it’s rog ue rogue nation
now rogue means that someone
is behaving in an abnormal
and maybe even a bad way
definitely not the way
they’re supposed to act with the group if someone goes rogue
that means they’re behaving in a way
that’s not normal or expected
especially after leaving the main group sometimes
we talk about a rogue nation
or a rogue state
and that is one that is breaking international law all right
so first Ferguson had to prove she could perform her own stunts
before she could get this role in mission impossible now
that is
the verb that we use with stunts friends to perform a stunt
it just means to do a stunt she did
which she attributes to her early training in dance
now if you attribute something to something else
it means that it was because of the first thing
you were able to do the second thing
so it sounds like because she had training in dance
she was probably very flexible
very agile so she was able to do stunts
kind of reminds me of that phrase thanks to right so also
because of we could say
she did thanks to her early training in dance
so she attributes it
her success to her early training in dance
despite that she still spent five hours a day for six weeks
training for the film yesterday
we saw the phrase in spite of right and so here
we see the synonym
despite now in spite of that that does sound a
little bit strange because of the word that there
because it’s kind of like a pronoun but if we used another word
there a more official word
then it would sound more natural
you could say in spite of that training right
or in spite of this training
she still spent five hours a day for six weeks
training for the film
what does it mean to do something five hours a day
that means every day for five hours
she was training
and she did this for six weeks that’s right
that sounds like pretty intense training
we do have more to learn right now
remarkable Rebecca Ferguson
the film was an incredible success earning more than six
hundred and eighty million dollars at the box office
Ferguson went on to star in two more films in the franchise
now an established star
the actress could choose roles that struck her fancy
one of those was playing 19th century singing sensation
Jenny lynde in the musical
the greatest showman
譬如the view of the entire valley
from the top of the mountain was incredible
the rescue team’s dedication to saving lives when facing danger
themselves is incredible
the scientists made some incredible breakthroughs
in cancer research last
year去年
譬如the established company
experienced many challenges in the marketplace
例如the government established fair policies
and adjust legal system for its citizens
the university plans to establish a new research center
with the latest Technologies
thank you very much Jack for that incredible language lab
let’s continue with our lesson friends
the film was an incredible success
earning more than six hundred and eighty us dollars
six hundred not six hundred eight dollars
680 million us dollars at the box office what does that mean
when we say something earn something at the box office well
this is a term that specifically has to do with movies
and movie ticket sales that’s right
so it’s not like years later
when somebody is renting the film to watch at home now
we’re talking about when the film first came out okay
so that’s a lot of money Ferguson
went on to star in two more films in the franchise well
franchises always reminds me of fast food restaurants actually
franchise has two or more completely different meanings
one could be talking about something
like a fast food restaurant
because
a franchise could mean the right to sell a company’s products
including using its name so think about McDonald’s
which may be locally owned by somebody here
but it’s using the name
McDonald’s they’re selling this product that
was created somewhere on the other side of the world
so this is a franchise
but in our lesson
the other definition is it’s a series of films
with the same titles characters that kind of thing
that’s the way it’s used here now
it’s right some other popular franchises when it comes to movies
of course are star wars or lord of the rings
there were many movies made under the same name
with the same characters all right well
moving on here
we read now an established star
the actress could choose roles that struck her fancy
if something strikes your fancy
it means you find it interesting
or you decide that you want it now a lot of times
this doesn’t mean you thought about it
beforehand just when you see it
you think oh this is a good idea
or i like that you know sometimes i like to go shopping
and just buy things that strike my fancy
maybe things that i wasn’t planning on buying
but i decided in the moment i liked them
and so the idea we get here in this sentence is that
she has a lot of options in front of her she is not limited
like she was before basically
she can get any role she wants if it is on the radar
if she sees it or knows about it or someone tells her about it
it’s probably open to her as an option so
if it strikes her fancy
she can go and try out for that role
one of those was playing the 19th century singing sensation
Jenny lynde in the the greatest showman ah
the greatest showman really was a good movie
did you see that movie
Ann Marie i did i did enjoy that movie
quite a bit and she was a singing sensation excuse me
in this movie wasn’t she
it means that she was sensational or remarkable
like we have been talking about a lot of people
thought she was an amazing singer well
we have something sensational for you right now
i mean it’s remarkable in its own way today’s info cloud
hello friends
welcome to infocloud i recently saw
a candidate running for mayor he was crying on stage
at one of his speeches
and saying that he’s worried about the future
and wants to change things
sometimes it’s funny to watch the candidates publicity stunts
i know crying on stage
especially
when it isn’t sincere is a good example of a publicity stunt
because it evokes emotions
that’s really what publicity stunts are things
you do to get attention
that’s right they are usually visual performances or appearances
that promote or raise awareness of a cause
or publicity stunts
are often used by advertisers
or companies or politicians to get people to notice
what they are doing or saying one example
is using mascots to get attention from a crowd
it is almost impossible to ignore a mascot
because of their appearance
publicity stunts
can also be used to manipulate the emotions of a crowd
it is important that we develop the ability to identify
which things are sincere and which things are publicity stunts
so we can maintain a more objective view of things
INFO cloud

remarkable Rebecca Ferguson
exploring yet another film genre science fiction
Ferguson poured herself into the role of lady Jessica
in Dune Dune part 2 lands in theaters
this month with Ferguson again
playing the matriarch in the story
with an outstanding career already under her belt now
Ferguson can pick and choose her roles
there is no doubt that more success awaits the talented actress
Carolyn’s outstanding performance in the role
earned her a well deserved award
Carolyn
或是the student’s outstanding grades
and achievements made her a top
candidate for a scholarship
the outstanding service at the hotel
made the guests feel valued and appreciated
outstanding job
Jack and speaking of that word
there are a lot of synonyms in this lesson remarkable
incredible outstanding
we even talked about the word sensational
in that previous section
speaking of which
Anne Marie did you say that Rebecca was a sensational singer
in the greatest showman well
she played a sensational singer
i don’t think she was actually singing in that movie well
she did a sensational job acting
like she was actually singing
exactly all right
well let’s get into this last section
here exploring yet another film genre science fiction
Ferguson poured herself into the role of lady Jessica in doon
i love that word genre
because it’s got that soft g at the beginning
it’s not a g it’s a g
it’s a soft g
but we say gr and i kind of like that sound genre yeah
yeah this of course refers to you know the style or the category
of art music or different types of literature
that’s right
there are a lot of different types of genres out there here
we’re talking about science fiction but comedy romance
there are all different types of movies and books out there
that you could read and this new movie doon well
the new one is doon part 2
Ferguson played lady Jessica in it
and it says here
that she poured herself into that role now
if you pour yourself into
doing something
it means that you are really trying your best
trying your hardest
and giving it everything you got to do a good job
those are some great phrases to know to try your best
try your hardest to give something everything you’ve got
and that’s exactly the idea i get to when i read this
she poured herself into this role of lady Jessica in doon now
people feel differently about the story Dune first
it was a novel
and now it’s been made into a movie or two movies now
but a Dune
what is a Dune in general out in the desert or at the beach
a Dune is kind of like a mountain of sand or a hill of sand
and it’s been formed by the wind but back to our lesson
Dune and Dune
part 2 i gotta be honest with you
Anne Marie i was not a big fan of the first movie Dune
it was long it was a little too
long for my taste
i didn’t particularly enjoy the movie
or the first book in the series
as well
but the book i tried to read the book i didn’t get very far
but i do know a lot of people who do really love this series so
don’t judge it based on what we say friends
i know that’s right
we have a lot of die
hard fans out there of Dune
who are probably hating on us right now
for not being huge fans of Dune hey
but to each his own right everybody has different tastes anyway
Dune part two lands in theaters this month
that’s another way of saying it’s coming to a theater near you
or it’s coming to theaters this month with Ferguson again
playing the matriarch in the story a matriarch
this is the head woman
usually of a group or a tribe or if you’ve seen this movie
she is a very significant leader
she’s a female leader in this movie
that’s right and often times
the matriarch will be the mother of a large family or like Gabe
said the leader of a tribe
or something like that the male version of this
would be patriarch all right well
we move on here with an outstanding career
already under her belt now
Ferguson can pick and choose her roles
that means that she can say no to the roles that she wants to
and yes to the ones that she wants
to say yes to
she doesn’t have to just take whatever job comes along
that’s not a luxury
that a lot of actors have you have to be really famous
in order to be able to pick and choose
whatever role that you want
a lot of actors if they’re not that famous
they get they take
whatever they can get
that’s the opposite of picking and choosing what you want
but let’s talk about that phrase to be under your belt
that means you’ve learned succeeded in something
and now it is part of your experience
there is no doubt that more success awaits
