這是宋人蔣捷透過聽雨，表達他自己對「少年、壯年、老年」三個人生階段不同境遇的感受。「人生無常又無奈」是他最終得到的感悟。

青少年時，我愛聽英文歌曲，是出於對歌者嗓音的喜好和悅耳的旋律。 中壯年後，再聽同樣的歌曲，我會探尋歌詞的涵意，並細心地感受歌者詮釋這首歌曲時，所釋放出的情感。
