My Chinese last name has frequently disadvantaged and hindered me in American society as compared to Western-sounding last names. However, I would have never thought that my Chinese last name would actually also cause discrimination against me in Chinese media such as Global Times or Chinese People Daily. As a strong believer of China’s leadership in a multi-polar world, I feel so sad and hurt deeply inside that it is absolutely imperative that I bring this to your attention not for personal reasons but for the good and aspirations of China as a nation of power. Chinese media should not actively and systematically engage in discriminatory behavior against overseas ethnic Chinese, especially those who are trying to help China level the playing field to be treated fairly. It’s a matter of fact that I am still a Taiwanese (a native Taiwanese), not an American. The Western versions of Chinese media outlets must clean up their image and must not blindly and irresponsibly accept the trash generated by Western trolls.
My first dealings with Global Times and Chinese People Daily were over two years ago. Well, I have no longer visited their Websites. At that time I sincerely believed that the news and editorial as well as other opinion contents of Global Times and Chinese People Daily were woefully weak and inadequate to effectively rebut against US and Western attacks on matters related to China’s human rights record and the so-called “pro-democracy” unrest in Hong Kong. Consequently I posted many comments on separate occasions trying to provide a more balanced and broader view and accurate representation of the information contained in stories from these two Chines media outlets. Global Times and Chinese People Daily had never posted my feedback in their comment sections. My comments have always been based on factual information from reasonably quality research. I originally thought that the embargo against my comments could have been due to the Taiwanese style spelling of my last name. However amazing, I eventually realized that there were also no other commentary entries posted that were associated with Chinese last names. The facts is that I also post comments in numerous Western as well as Chinese/Taiwan, Including the DPP’s English version newspaper in Taiwan, media sites and have not encountered such targeted exclusion. At these sites there are invariably many, if not all, commentary participants with ethnic Chinese last names.
On the other hand, Western-facing news outlets such as China’s Global Times’ comment section are totally embarrassing cesspools overflowing with racist, obscene and derogatory language against the Chinese people. The comment section of South China Morning Post owned by Alibaba is better but still very trashy. In contrast, even the slightest distasteful comment would not be tolerated by established news sites such as Wall Street Journal, New York Time, Financial Times, The Diplomat, Reuters, Guardian, etc… In fact, all the major Western, Australian and Japanese media outlets will consistently and swiftly reject well-founded comments that are deemed adverse in the slightest and will shut out “unfriendly” trolls. There is a quite apropos Western saying: “don’t shit where you eat”. I don’t know what China is trying to prove here with such irrational negligence. Frankly I feel very disappointed and ashamed that a world power like China cannot keep its media outlets clean, professional and relevant. China must strictly require that its media outlets, official or private, practice very strict editorial control to maintain high professional standards in commentary sections and lockout the trolls. Let’s face it for real, most, if not all, of these trolls are part of the concerted anti-China media warfare.
In a Global Times article on March 21, 2017 about David Borenstein's documentary on working as a "white monkey" in China, it declared that foreigners “ were often approached by agents in the rent-a-foreigner industry to show up at promotional events organized to lure potential buyers… It prompted many Chinese viewers to criticize a sense of inferiority amongst Chinese people and an attitude of worshipping everything foreign.“ Because the Borenstein documentary had “drawn lots of attention” all over, I am using this article as an outstanding example of the well-known Chinese disease of blind worshipping of Western foreigners which subconsciously lead to low self-esteem. As I contemplate this deplorable problem, my distasteful experience with the English version of Chinese media clearly tells me that the media environment itself in China promulgates, reinforces, perpetuates and in myriad ways institutionalizes this ugly flaw. A concerted effort must be made to eradicated this !
In general, China must quickly develop and relentlessly implement potent and sustainable means to counter Western media aggression as part of the West’s information warfare against China. Here the aphorism “the best defense is offense” is highly applicable. Well-researched and professional produced documentaries on discrimination, racism, militarism and crimes against humanity, corruption, economic aggression, enslavement and crime against other countries, geopolitical treachery, etc…, committed by the West domestically or internationally, should be extensively promulgated. Such programs should make abundant use of interviews with relevant foreign experts, specialists and distinguished contributors and of their published work. Such offensive undertaking should definitely leverage Western social media channels as well as video/graphic means such as Youtube. It’s no problem that most of these media platforms and mechanisms are not used by the Chines population; but they are definitely available and accessible to overseas anchor points as conduits. A complacent, demure and hackneyed retort of “interference in China’s internal affairs” is ludicrously insufficient in the media environment.
When American or Western attacks China human rights violation, Chinese leaders have to be more diplomatic ways. However, Chinese media should rebut the accusation with more aggressive and stretch further with reasonable research. for an example, US and the Western accused Chinese leader’s human rights violation of Hong Kong students protest 2014. In fact, Hong Kong political and human rights are hundred times better than American's Puerto Rico or Guam under Chinese rules. Puerto Rican or Guam people can't vote for any American politician, such as president. It is crime and will be in the jail under Puerto Rican's laws if Puerto Ricans have any thought of Puerto Rico independence. All Puerto Rican's governor or high ranking politicians are only appointed by mainland American politicians, not elected by Puerto Rican people.
