Starting a Helldivers 2 session should mean choosing a mission and getting ready for combat, not staring at a “Failed to Join Game Lobby: Timed Out” message. When matchmaking refuses to connect, the cause is often related to temporary matchmaking bugs, crossplay handshake failures, or network routing problems. Before spending time changing complicated settings, make sure your Helldivers 2 Super Credits are ready for your plans and then work through the simpler connection fixes first.

Retry Quickplay Several Times

Quickplay is the easiest place to begin because it requires almost no setup. If the first attempt ends with a timeout, select Quickplay again rather than immediately restarting the game. Continue making matchmaking attempts several times in a row.

Some players have reported that repeating Quickplay around five to ten times can eventually bypass the timeout. The reason is likely that each attempt can interact with matchmaking differently. A failed connection does not necessarily mean the next request will fail as well.

This method is particularly convenient when everything else in the game appears to be working normally. You do not need to alter your network configuration or change gameplay options, so it makes sense to try this before moving into more technical troubleshooting.

Switch Off Crossplay Temporarily

If repeated Quickplay attempts produce the same result, crossplay is another useful setting to test. Open Options, select Gameplay, and locate the Crossplay option. Turn it off, restart Helldivers 2, and then attempt to join a lobby again.

Crossplay allows players from different platforms to connect, but that process can involve additional connection handshakes. If one of those exchanges fails, matchmaking may not complete correctly. Temporarily disabling the feature can help determine whether cross-platform communication is contributing to the problem.

You can restore the setting later if turning it off does not make any difference. The goal is simply to eliminate one possible source of the failed connection.

Use an SOS Beacon

Rather than attempting to join another player's lobby, you can also create your own mission. Start a mission solo from your ship and deploy to a planet. Once you are on the surface, activate an SOS Beacon to request other players.

The required stratagem sequence is Up, Down, Right, Up. Using the beacon gives matchmaking another way to bring players into your session. Instead of trying to connect you to an existing public lobby, the game can search for players who can join the mission you are already hosting.

This workaround is especially worth considering when joining public sessions repeatedly fails. It changes the direction of the connection process without requiring you to modify your computer or console.

Try Disabling IPv6 on PC

PC players with continued timeout problems can investigate their IPv6 settings. Windows allows you to access network adapter properties through Control Panel or Settings. From the adapter properties, Internet Protocol Version 6 can be temporarily disabled.

Some players have reported that this resolves persistent lobby timeout issues. However, every network setup is different, so disabling IPv6 should be treated as a troubleshooting experiment rather than a guaranteed fix.

If the change has no effect, you can enable IPv6 again. It is better to make one change at a time so you can identify which setting, if any, affects the matchmaking problem.

Verify the Game Files

When connection attempts continue failing, checking the game installation is another worthwhile step. Steam users can verify the integrity of their installed files, while console players can use the storage or cache-management features available on their system.

Damaged or incomplete files can sometimes lead to unexpected behavior. Although verification is not specifically designed to repair matchmaking, it can remove another potential source of trouble and is relatively straightforward to perform.

Choose the Simplest Fix First

There is no universal solution for every lobby timeout, so a gradual approach is usually the most practical. Start by retrying Quickplay several times, then test crossplay with a restart. If joining remains unsuccessful, host a mission and activate an SOS Beacon. PC players can additionally test IPv6, while file verification is useful when other methods fail.

Working through these options one at a time keeps the troubleshooting process manageable and makes it easier to identify what helped. Once matchmaking starts working again, you can return your attention to missions, upgrades, and preparation instead of repeatedly dealing with connection errors. For players planning their next session, cheap Helldivers 2 Super Credits can also be considered when organizing their game-related purchases.
