拖到初選領表截止前一天，立法院長王金平終於親口宣布，放棄提名機會。情勢走到這一步，國民黨主席朱立倫、副總統吳敦義及王金平，這三大藍營A咖，把自身角色，從「主動承擔」轉換成了「被動受命」，隨著黨內徵召程序的啟動，未來國民黨將免費為全民公演一場有如三國演義般的權謀大戲。

朱吳王3人，吳敦義的籌碼最少，但壓力也最輕，由於他是黨內各方都不排斥的人選，若朱王都不選，低調的吳民調雖低，卻是臨危受命，敗選責任也不會算在他頭上。已沒有退路的王金平，雖然人脈廣又有本土派奧援，但受困於深藍選民的抵制，除非有不惜黨分裂也要一戰的決心，想壓倒朱吳獲得徵召困難不小。

朱立倫獲全黨擁戴，只要他願意，吳王都得讓賢，但他是真心不想選，表面理由是對選民有不選的承諾，但真正原因是新北市地盤不能失，對朱來說，藍營僅存新北一都，若為2016把身家全押上，很可能連翻本的籌碼都輸光，畢竟「留得青山在、不怕沒柴燒」，黨內因此有人戲稱朱是「青山派」掌門，只是朱卻沒想清楚，若堅持避戰，就算屆時「青山依舊在」，但國民黨卻可能已是「幾度夕陽紅」。
