Angela Lee Duckworth (born 1970) is an American academic, psychologist, and popular science author. She is the Rosa Lee and Egbert Chang Professor of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, where she studies grit and self-control. She is also the Founder and CEO of Character Lab, a not-for-profit whose mission is to advance the science and practice of character development.(r.1)

Duckworth was born in 1970 to Chinese immigrants.[1] She grew up in Cherry HillNew Jersey[2] and graduated from Cherry Hill High School East.[3]

Duckworth earned a B.A. in Neurobiology at Harvard College in 1992.[4] She then graduated from the University of Oxford in 1996 with an M.Sc. in neuroscience on a Marshall Scholarship, and from the University of Pennsylvania in 2006 with a Ph.D. in psychology.[5][6] She was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 2013.[6]

Duckworths first book, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, was released in May 2016.[7] It stayed on The New York Times bestseller list for 21 weeks.[8] A review of the book in The New York Times called Duckworth "the psychologist who has made grit the reigning buzzword in education-policy circles."[9]

Duckworth is currently the co-host of the podcast No Stupid Questions on the Freakonomics network.[10][11]

 

Story:

Duckworth is best known for her research on grit, a strength she defines as passion and perseverance for long-term goals.[1][12][13] She developed the Grit Scale, a measure of this construct.[13][14]

Duckworth has found grit to be a common factor among the high-achievers she has studied.[13] Her work suggests that grit is unrelated to IQ but is closely related to conscientiousness.[12][13] Grit has been studied across the lifespan, but Duckworth focuses primarily on how building grit can help adolescents.[7] This falls under the umbrella of character education and the movement to expand school instruction beyond solely cognitive factors.

Since the introduction of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) in 2015, there has been a growing call for effective ways to measure character strengths.[15] However, Duckworth herself has encouraged caution when applying and, especially, testing character in classrooms.[16] One reason is that existing measures were designed for scientific purposes, and so as yet there are no reliable ways to measure grit in high-stakes situations, like college admissions or job applications.[17]

Some claim that focusing on grit would lead to the neglect of other important factors, like the positive socio-economic prerequisites necessary to deploy it.[18] Duckworth has acknowledged the importance of environmental factors, saying that its not that one matters more than the other but rather that they both matter: "The question is not whether we should concern ourselves with grit or structural barriers to achievement. In the most profound sense, both are important, and more than that, they are intertwined."[19]

Grit has had its share of critics. A 2017 meta-analysis found that "grit is only moderately correlated with performance and retention," and that it had not been adequately distinguished from several previously studied constructs, including conscientiousness, persistence, and industriousness.[20]

3. Each year, approximately 1,300 cadets join the entering class at the United States Military Academy, West Point. During their first summer on campus, cadets are required to complete a series of brutal tests. This summer initiation program is known internally as “Beast Barracks.”

In the words of researchers who have studied West Point cadets, “Beast Barracks is deliberately engineered to test the very limits of cadets’ physical, emotional, and mental capacities.”

You might imagine that the cadets who successfully complete Beast Barracks are bigger, stronger, or more intelligent than their peers. But Angela Duckworth, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, found something different when she began tracking the cadets.

Duckworth studies achievement, and more specifically, how your mental toughness, perseverance, and passion impact your ability to achieve goals. At West Point, she tracked a total of 2,441 cadets spread across two entering classes. She recorded their high school rank, SAT scores, Leadership Potential Score (which reflects participation in extracurricular activities), Physical Aptitude Exam (a standardized physical exercise evaluation), and Grit Scale (which measures perseverance and passion for long–term goals).

 

Here’s what she found out…

It wasn’t strength or smarts or leadership potential that accurately predicted whether or not a cadet would finish Beast Barracks. Instead, it was grit — the perseverance and passion to achieve long–term goals — that made the difference.

In fact, cadets who were one standard deviation higher on the Grit Scale were 60% more likely to finish Beast Barracks than their peers. It was mental toughness that predicted whether or not a cadet would be successful, not their talent, intelligence, or genetics.(r.4)

About the author  :   

Angela Lee Duckworth is an Asia American, born 1970, received undergraduate degree from Harvard University for advance studies of neurobiology, then a master degree from Oxford University for neuroscience, also a PHD degree from University of Pennsylvania in psychology.  She is now a professor of UPenn.  Prior to her career in research she had been a school teacher, teaching math to high school students.  When she was student of Harvard U. she founded a summer camp for under privilege children, for which in 2018 was celebrated it’s 25th anniversary, and became a profile of her case study.  Duckworth has found “Grit” to be a common factor among the high achievers.  Her work suggested that grit is unrelated to IQ but is closely related to conscientiousness.  In her book she particularly focus on how to build “Grit”, she is a great speaker, was invited to many speech and a devoted educator.

 

Summary of the book :  

  In her research Angela Duckworth first set foot on the campus of United States military academy at West Point .  Every year more than 14000 applicants are hoping to be accepted, they will have to meet with the criterion of top school grade and high SAT score plus strong physical fitness, only 1200 are qualify to enroll, nearly all are varsity athletes.  After school is started, student will have to face everyday training which starts 5:00 am ends 10 pm, many students were not able to make it and drop out .   West point is training each student mentally, Physically and socially, strong and never so easy to give up.

 

In  her teaching job, Duckworth discovered that talent student can be distracted if the study environment is not right, she gave example of her student David Luong, he was good math student in the class received A for all test and always work very hard, she think  that David should  not belong to her class, David needs more challenge to his math study, she walked him to the department chairman’s office and decide to accelerate him to the higher level class .  although David did not perform as high as he was, but he was motivated to promote his talent, and continued to excel himself for the better education and latter become very successful in his career.  The author demonstrated more case to prove 




that aptitude test is stink and it can affect kids that is talented in many ways.

In her book she said :

As much as talent counts, effort counts twice, this is the formula :

Talent x effort = skill

Skill x effort   = achievement

Without effort talent means nothing at all

Effort bring the talent to the excellent.

Keep on doing something persistently and loyal to it means gritty

How gritty are you ?  a chart of grit scale was designed by the author on page 55 of the book.

Grit grows, the older in age, the stronger in grit. Every human trait is influenced by both genes and experience.

 

Here are 4 psychological asset of grit : interest, practice , purpose and hope.  Angela interview with many famous successful people and proof that passion to whatever they are doing is most important element to their success, Jeff Bezo is one of them.  At last paragraph of page 116, it said:  In sum the directive to follow your passion is not bad advice. But what may be even more useful is to understand how passion are fostered in the first place.   By studying the competitor of spelling bees , musicians and sport player, the advice of practice is even more so, those hours and hours practice to become an elites cannot be neglects.  As for the purpose, it should be the intention to contribute to the well being of others.  If the purpose is positive, it will be a powerful resource of motivation.  We always hope for the best, but sometime can feeling hopeless and suffer from it.  Suffering without control can produce symptom of clinical depression, optimistic sprit is favorite to nurture our nature and brings hope to remain perseverance.

 

At the end Angela Duckworth concluded that Hard Thing Rule should be emphasized, Inverted U theory can also help to indicate the relationship between pressure and performance.    To be gritty is to keep putting one foot in front of the other.  To be gritty is to hold fast to an interest and purpose goal.  To be gritty is to invest days after weeks after years in challenge practice.  To be gritty is to fall 7 time and rise eight.

In Grit, the power of passion and perseverance, Angela Duckworth gave us the new term of grit, the popular slang associated with education and policy circles. Like Torey’s sweet hub mentioned: good-by doesn’t mean good-by, but see you again.  A huge thanks to Faye and Torey, for burning the midnight oil to cross over the Time zone to talk over with us. Lily’s great help for setting up the googlemeet to let Daisy, Mingli could join together.  Really shows the Grit spring!

Faye revealed the essencials: accurate goal, positive attitude. Daisy reminded us of finding solution then let it go! Mingli emphasized on passion and interest. She told us that Angela’s father’s spirit of grit push her to overcome her weakness. Torey lit us the hope after the pandemic with her baby photo in her womb. Grit is a way for youth to fight against the turbulence, till now, we learn to flow with the tide. We can feel the exciting feeling of the grit to invite the baby angel. Lily shared that from learning Arabic, open her mind and train her grit to face the challenge. Carol is always the quick thought joker and tickle our funny bone: she mentioned that she has no talent so she put more effort than anybody else. And she take Florence’s compliment as a desert, not good for health, all of us break into laughter. Failure is the king. Success is the queen . Once when we go through with it, we will build our castle up.

Faye also gave us a wonderful conculsion: page 145: If you want to be grittier, find a gritty culture to join in.  If you are a leader and you want the people in your organization to be , creat a gritty culture.  How true is this to our reading club, a gritty culture is there, we all are a group of gritty people.  Yeah!
