It's hard to me to understand the aesthetics, or even historical development, of Romanticism in the postmodern atmosphere; it is, however, both interesting and agreeable to me that Romantics carry an self-conscious and becoming self in their work. I think Romanticism is a new kind of humanism (at least Romantic poets to me write with a human-oriented tone in their "spontaneous" human feeling overflowing). I like the word "becoming" used in Paul Hamilton's Metaromanticism to describe the ideology of Romanticism. Have Romantics fulfilled their dream, a humanistic world, in their time? Did they know they've done it? Or they just kept dreaming? I don't know. But I'm sure Romanticsim has become something irreplaceable in the human history: passion and the passion to look after one's dream bravely. Romantics have hope for the future, even though they may not be always sure of its definite fulfilment. They just keep working. And that makes all different. |
