"Hey, do you have time tonight? Come to my place to hang out if you want to"
said Mary.  "Don't you have GRE exam to take tomorrow?" I asked.
"Nah, I will take it easy."  Taking it easy is not a easy thing.
However, this is how American students view GRE in general:
one of the components in the application process.
It is an important but not the most important piece ( LSAT is said to be the most important element for law school applicants since studies found LSAT score has highly positive correlation with the percentage of passing bar exam).

An admission officer at school also told me that
they look at applicants' profile as a whole :
they want to know applicants' personalities and backgrounds
through statement of purpose and recommendation letters;
they want to know applicants' learning potential through
transcripts and GRE score card.

He later on commented : I noticed a lot of students from Asia
only focus on getting good scores on GRE exams
and failed to communicate with the admission officers on issues
and questions in regard to who they really are.

I nodded my head and recalled the time I arrived here : a shy,
conservative girl with 6 years of formal English training
in Taiwan while barely dare to speak a word in class.

Time flew by and I am glad I have changed since.
However, I am still nervous the night before important exams.
I went to the party that night and we had fun.

Mary scored a 1710 next day. Not easy for her to get into Harvard.
Well, I guess it has more do with personalities
than culture differences in this case. :)

提到 GRE, I have an interesting story to share…
2008/07/28 10:39

I took GRE exam years ago while I was in Taiwan.  Before the exam I got ahold of a set of old exam that my friend obtained from XX補習班.  I studied it religiously for nearly a month, as I did not know how else to prepare for this wield exam.

Guess what? Every question in the exam I took was from the old exams (maybe a combination of a number of old exams, I no longer recall).  To make things worse, I remembered all the correct answers to the questions.  In fact, I deliberately skipped a group of reading comprehension questions, and turned it in way before the time was up.

I later received a letter from the exam board.  They congratulated me on getting the highest GRE score in Asia (I have forgotten the exact wording), and requested that I took the exam again.  The letter arrived merely two days before I was to leave for my school in the US.  I "conveniently" ignored the letter, and the rest is history…

Looking back, I feel there wasn't really anything that I had done wrong, except I should have skipped a lot more questions than I did…

This is absolutely a true story -- scout's honor.

Dear 書生

Congratulations on your high achievement !

You must take the exam a while back when the exam was tested on paper since I was told not to skip any question on computer adapted GRE exam as the level of difficulties will be judged by the scores of the preceding questions.

I immediately know this english word "putsch":)...coincidentally or according to the linguistic background of both languages: it is the same as german "Putsch" which means exactly 暴動; 騷亂; 政變 too...

Even with some advantage of german knowledge, I dare to say I would never get that high scores as you did, if I'd ever try it...

Respect! :)

2280, excellent!!  Probably top 3%.  I agree with the counselor that GRE score is not EVERYTHING.  However, 2280 would be eye-opening.  (BTW, I took it 16 yrs ago, and back then, 2400 was perfect score.)
