Below is a friend's s/s 3/26/08 身體感到越來越冷,回到家後就開始發燒起來。 Basically her s/s are like this: Chill, High Fever, Headaches, Nausea, Musleaches, Running nose, Cough, Fatigues, Diarrhea, Sore throat, Sputum/Congested Chest, Weakness
................................................................................................................ The common cold and flu are both contagious viral infections of the respiratory tract. Although the symptoms can be similar, flu is much worse. A cold may drag you down a bit, but the flu can make you shudder at the very thought of getting out of bed. Congestion, sore throat, and sneezing are common with colds. Both cold and flu bring coughing, headache, and chest discomfort. With the flu, though, you are likely to run a high fever for several days and have headache, myalgia, fatigue, and weakness. Usually, complications from colds are relatively minor, but a severe case of flu can lead to a life-threatening illness such as pneumonia. More than 100 types of cold viruses are known, and new strains of flu evolve every few years. Since both diseases are viral, antibiotics cannot conquer cold or flu. Remember: Antibiotics only treat bacterial infections. A few antiviral medications are available to treat flu. But there are no medications that specifically defeat the common cold. Antibiotics may be helpful if there is a secondary bacterial infection. ......................................................................................................................................................................... Then, she said more of her symptoms in a couple of days, and since it involves more than just flu symptoms, so it's more likely that she has Stomach Flu or Gastroenteritis. ***So if a person started panicking and ran to the hospital when she/he first noticed the symptoms, the doctor might not get the full picture of this disease, and might make the wrong diagnosis. ***It's best to let flu or cold to run its course, wait and see if it gets worse. If resting and warm water dont help over 7 -10 days, instead the symptoms get worse, then you should consider seeing a doctor. It's also best to record/write down the course of your signs/symptoms and present it to doctors. Help doctors to do the proper Dx. .................................................................................................................. "Stomach flu" is a popular term but not a true medical diagnosis. It's not uncommon to mistake gastroenteritis, which is what stomach flu is, for the viral infection we commonly call "flu." Gastroenteritis refers to irritation of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach and intestines). A virus, bacteria, parasites in spoiled food or in unclean water, or another agent can cause stomach flu. With gastroenteritis, you will have symptoms such as abdominal cramps, stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea. Symptoms of flu are similar to a cold except flu symptoms are much worse with fatigue, fever, headache, and respiratory congestion. Flu symptoms come on so abruptly that you may know the exact time you first came down with flu. Symptoms of gastroenteritis or stomach flu include abdominal cramps, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. You may also have fever, headache, and swollen lymph glands, depending on the type of bug that causes it. In severe cases of gastroenteritis, loss of bodily fluid can result in dehydration, a life-threatening condition that needs medical attention. Signs of dehydration include sunken eyes, light-headedness, increased thirst, dry or sticky mucous membranes in the mouth, lack of normal elasticity of the skin, decreased urine output, and decreased tears. You can avoid dehydration by continuing to drink fluids and gradually eating a bland diet such as the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, and dry toast). A bland diet is easily digested and is unlikely to irritate your sensitive gastrointestinal system. There are many causes of stomach flu (gastroenteritis), including bacteria such as E. coli, Camphylobacter, Shigella, and Salmonella. Viruses can also cause stomach flu and are responsible for 30 percent to 40 percent of gastroenteritis cases in children. Common stomach flu viruses include norovirus or Norwalk-like virus, adenovirus, rotavirus, calicivirus, and astrovirus. Stomach viruses are notorious for spreading rapidly because of poor hand washing. While not as common, parasites such as giardia and cryptosporidium can cause severe diarrhea and dehydration. Water-borne parasites are common in underdeveloped parts of the world that have unsanitary water supplies. It is recommended that travelers stick to bottled water to avoid water-borne parasites -- a potential cause of gastroenteritis. Some foods may irritate your stomach and also cause gastroenteritis. Reaction to dairy products in someone with lactose intolerance is the most common example. Severe reactions to seafood is another example. A lack of good hygiene can result in gastroenteritis. For instance, improper hand washing after using the bathroom or after changing a baby's diaper can spread the infectious bug from person to person. Many doctors call stomach flu "a family affair" because it is so highly contagious and usually goes through all members of a family. ......................................................................................................................................................................... 偶爾會來個很可怕的咳嗽,還有不少痰卡在肺那邊的樣子 Yeh I know how it feels like. Let me ask you something, while you cough, do you feel out of your breath or shortness of breath? YOu ever heard of wheezing sound (像笛子咻咻的聲音) Even though my background is Western Medicine, but I'd like to share some Chinese meds (much less harmful) for you to try and hopefully can relieve this痰卡在肺. 多喝溫開水,川貝冰糖燉梨. 1. Wash a pear, Do NOT peel off the skin, cut the entire pear into cubes, take off the core.梨皮也要一起燉 (it's best to find the brown skin pear) 2. put the pear into the blender, add some water, blend it up till smoothy like 3. low heat or in steamer, add 冰糖, slow cook it 4. get a small bowl or cup, get a couple of teaspoon of ground up川貝母粉 , you can get it from chinese meds pharmacy), and pour some of the pear juice into the cup, then stir it and cover it up, let it steep for a few min. 5. drink it while it's still warm/hot... It's very important to cook the pear and NOT to eat fresh pear (very cold). So this way, you get the nutrients from pear juice and 川貝母粉, you also get to drink lots of warm water! Drink it through out the day, so if you used a big pear, you can make a medium size pot of pear juice. ** Drink continously for 7 to 10 days, then stop for 5 days, then continue for another 7-10 days if you still feel congested and running nose. ** IF after you drink this, and you feel that you 更咳嗽 and cough out more sputum, this is a GOOD sign! The purpose is to help you to cough out the sputum, so dont think that it's bad. *However, if you still taking western meds, you can take western med first and this drink in 2 hours. Just dont take them together. ** This drink is NOT for everyone, everyone's case is different, so if you not sure, best to consult with your doctors. *** Basically, this drink is to relieve congestive chest or to help loosen up the thick sputum/mucus.
